I think I've narrowed down my small backpack search to the Aer Go Pack 2, Aer Pro Pack Slim, and the Fjallraven Ulvo. Any opinions, particularly around how small they pack and how well they protect your laptop, gimme 😛

jeromechoo,
@jeromechoo@masto.ai avatar

@christianselig I have a Civic Half-zip 22L from Evergoods and it's awesome. Dual water bottle pockets, laptop sleeve, 2 organization pockets.

Packs tight. A full bag packed for a weekend trip will still fit under the seat in an airplane.

After watching the Fallout TV series, I finally bit the bullet and played a Fallout video game for the first time.

Or rather, I played the game that the Fallout series is based upon: Wasteland.

So what exactly is Wasteland? It’s a turn-based RPG that takes place in, you guessed it, a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

If you didn’t know, Fallout was created as the spiritual successor after the developer, Interplay, had a disagreement with EA – who owned the rights to Wasteland.

Wasteland was a DOS game that came out in 1988. Yes, I know that it came out a year prior for C64 and Apple ][, but the version I’m playing is the DOS game – albeit, a remastered version that adds music and voice acting. The graphics, however, have mostly remained the same in all their EGA glory.

And I got to tell you, Wasteland is good! It’s not as visually impressive as Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest for the NES, but the story-telling and world-building is top notch. It does not take place within the same universe as Fallout, but it’s very similar. This is a world that’s fun to explore.

Eventually, Wasteland got sequels. Wasteland 2 came out in 2014, and Wasteland 3 was released in 2020 – both published by inXile Entertainment, which acquired the rights from EA. Interestingly, just like the Fallout franchise, Wasteland is now owned by Microsoft.

Could we eventually see a Fallout crossover with Wasteland? Only time will tell, but it could plausibly happen.

@atomicpoet how playable do you think Wasteland is on a controller layout? I’ve been meaning to install a DOS emulator on my steam deck.

Learned a new trick that's apparently an ancient Mexican trick for cooking tamales:

Put river rocks in the steaming water.

This way, as your tamales (or whatever) steams, the clattering of the rocks tells you there's still enough water for the job.

When the rocks stop rattling, you've run out of water and things will burn soon.

I know I'll be throwing some rocks in the dishwasher for this little hack!

jeromechoo,
@jeromechoo@masto.ai avatar

@snarkysteff I'm sure there's a modern version of this somewhere but I just burned my bamboo steamers because of a steamer pot than ran out of water 😩

jeromechoo,
@jeromechoo@masto.ai avatar

@snarkysteff Give it a go! People usually think of dumplings in a steamer, but my favorite dishes to steam tend to be ones that only work in a steamer, like steamed eggs!

I was making these steamed pork ribs when I burned my steamer. The bamboo smoke made the pork ribs pretty inedible so I'll be making these again when my new steamer arrives.

I’m especially interested in using it to generate knowledge graph visualizations, which are historically kind of ugly and nonstandard.

How did The New York Times, one of the world’s most famous and well-established publications, choose to review Geraldine DeRuiter’s ( @everywhereist) new book?

By illustrating her decapitated head on a plate, getting devoured by another woman. No, I’m not joking.

I got mad about it. I wrote about why:

@mariyadelano @everywhereist I read the NYT review. I didn’t get the sense at all that this was a review of a book. It felt rather more like a disguised personal attack.
