My repertoire of Christmas songs on the piano is getting longer. Why is Carol of the Bells so much fun to play? Apart from getting to really hammer on the keys, I think it's because it's kind of dark and ominous, and very unlike most other traditional holiday tunes.

I've seen a lot of voices saying that " does not need to grow to be successful", and "we don't need to put in more effort to welcome new users", and frankly this attitude is pissing me off.

"The reason that social media did not work as promised is not because we misunderstood the nature of the internet and the possibilities of digital connectivity, but because oligarchs took over the digital space."

If there is any chance of using social media as a force for democracy, we desperately need a system that cannot be taken over by the oligarchs. And, right now, the is the best candidate for this.

Thus, there is homework that needs to be done. We cannot just rest on our laurels and proclaim that the tech is already good enough, and that the tech approach somehow magically solves all the problems of other social media platforms. We need to get away from the overwhelmingly white male European/North American user base and look for ways on how to increase user participation - not to mention participation of users from Asia, Africa, and South America.

If we try to maintain the Fediverse as the home of a small, incestuous group of people with a particular tech slant, the oligarchs will win.

I've been essentially off Twitter for almost a year now, and Mastodon has become an increasingly rich, diverse replacement. Many of the gaps that were here a year ago are filling in.

I still miss the extensive breaking news coverage and official government and org accounts I remember from Twitter.

When I've mentioned this in the past, zealots here have suggested I shouldn't want those things and that they'd somehow ruin this "community".

I disagree. We can have those things without Nazis.

google search is broken as it can't give me an answer about the making of the dolphin in "johnny mnemonic" (1995). a friend asked the paid chatgpt about this for me and it also cannot give a reliable answer and tries to derail to "jurassic park", that CGI may or may not have been used and that it doesn't actually have any sources about how the dolphin was done. this is the state of information technology in 2023

So it looks like Donald Trump will be skipping the GOP debate in Milwaukee. It’s too bad, because he likely would have been asked directly about some of the crimes of which he stands accused, and he could have further incriminated himself on national television.

Or perhaps that’s the very reason he isn’t showing up. His lawyers probably are very worried about what he might say.

The more I look at the ChatGPT logo, the more it confuses me. Nothing lines up with anything. None of the lines would connect if extended. It's not a continuous loop. It's not interlocking links. It’s driving me mad.
