“The fediverse is a privacy nightmare” - A lot of good thoughts by @Bloonface

Whilst the headline may be inflammatory, the thrust of the article stands: That as soon as you publish anything on the fediverse it'll get copied to 10’s of 1,000's of servers, and is then completely and irrevocably out of your control.

Some may argue that's a feature rather than a bug (and I'd be tempted to agree to a large extent), but I wonder what proportion of the fediverse is aware - let alone understand the implications - of it.

jpaskaruk,

@michael @Bloonface

I have never understood people who think about privacy while posting on social media. This is the most un-private thing one could possibly do.

You don't do your private stuff here. You do the stuff here that you want the whole world to see.

jpaskaruk,

@Bloonface @michael

>it's - at best - no better

Sorry but I'm calling bullshit on that one. I am aware that there is a large segment of the populace that will forever be determined to not see Nazis until their neighbours disappear in the night, at which point speaking means they disappear too. But that demographic has always existed.

The Fedi is better than the corporates, because the Fedi will never know what's in your other tabs. Facebook does, even if you're not a member. NO comparison.

jpaskaruk,

@Bloonface @michael

The only information the Fedi distributes is the public information that you gave it.

I'm not here to hammer the difference into your head, but man.

jpaskaruk,

@Bloonface @michael

Shouldn't you be giving your data to BlueSky? Says right in your bio that you don't care for this place.

I suggest you not subject yourself to all this unpleasantness and go enjoy your algorithmic spoonfeed.

I don't know how many times, in my younger years, I would go to a place with a group (sometimes friends, sometimes just people I was hanging out with because they let me, which was about as much as it took) and have a good time for a couple hours.

Then we leave and someone goes "what a dick!" and someone else agrees and then they all have this big agreeing conversation about a massive personal conflict that I didn't see happen.

NTs are extremely confusing.

jpaskaruk, to random

Hey

I have a major peeve about this instrument. I've been at it three years now.

The sheet music books.

I have spent hundreds on songbooks already, and just, why are these not all being sold with spiral binding?!

The fact they size it just a bit too big for photocopying or scanning in normal-size machines is fair play, but do these pricks understand that they're selling a product which basically HAS to be mutilated in order to be used?

I am culturally a pirate, going back to C64 swap meets and spending my money on blank cassettes instead of vinyl records in the 80s.

I have, during times when I had decent income, attempted to "go legit" many times, thinking that all the effort involved in the piracy was no longer worth it.

I won't recite the whole litany, but the problem is that if you pay, your experience is objectively much, much worse. That's the long and short of it.

jpaskaruk,

@doggle @bugbear @actuallyautistic

While I do think this is true, I haven't found it a very useful rhetorical tool.

If you're taking something without paying, there are many who will never accept that you're anything but bad, so telling those people that you're actually helping is gonna get a way worse reaction than a neutral or mildly negative one.

If you simply point out that using Netflix is frustrating as hell, they will relate, and consider the complexity of the world, is my hypothesis.

jpaskaruk,

@doggle @bugbear @actuallyautistic

100% with you; I'm just talking rhetorical strategy. Like I said, there are those who will only ever see it that particular way.

Hating on Netflix, everyone loves doing that. :>

jpaskaruk,

@doggle @bugbear @actuallyautistic

Eh, if Metallica says I stole their work by downloading the MP3s - even though they are one of the cases where I actually did buy the CDs at one point - it is not my place to tell Metallica that I did not.

It's just that their work is the work of repackaging and selling the same product and expecting people to go along with the charade that it's something new. Last good one: Justice.

I think a deep examination of this dynamic is better than blanket denial.

jpaskaruk,

@doggle @bugbear @actuallyautistic

I prefer the Free Software nomenclature; "Open Source" was an invention of the capitalists, who wanted to take the work of Free Software developers and monetize it, without crediting St. Ignucious and the rest.

jpaskaruk,

@doggle @bugbear @actuallyautistic

The GPL - copyleft - rests firmly on the foundation of Copyright. If we don't respect copyright, they don't have to respect copyleft.

Not that they do.

jpaskaruk,

@doggle @bugbear @actuallyautistic

Ok I'm gonna stop replying now, not because I'm mad or tired of you, but because I have a list of things I need to get done today and Mastodon has taken more than its quota of hours.

You are all very engrossing and I love you all and it's a problem for me right now, in all honesty.

Open Source community after Red Hat decides to go closed source 😂 By limiting the RHEL public sources to CentOS Stream, it will now be more difficult for community/off-shoot enterprise Linux distributions like Alma Linux, Rocky Linux, Oracle Linux, etc, to provide 1:1 binary compatible builds against given RHEL releases.

It is a bad decade for those hats. I mean, it is not the fault of the hats. Won't someone think of the textiles?

Nice. I keep hearing about Kratky, might have to give one a try next. Creep my media for pics of our SIP bins/beds. I post veggies.

jpaskaruk,

@ai6yr

The SIP beds work out the same more or less - the large wooden ones get filled once a week, the bins every couple days, though if it's a long hot week we'll top them up every day.

Speaking of, haven't checked the new cage yet today. There were corn plants poking up yesterday so probably some new pics incoming in a few... :>

jpaskaruk,

@ai6yr

I'm basically in an ongoing process of caging off the whole property, we live an hour North of the nearest podunk "urban" centre and the wildlife are both delightful and a pestilence. I get see an eagle or a coyote or a gigantic woodpecker, and hate all deer, weekly.

At the moment the new cage is open on top but I'm probably gonna put chicken wire over the top cause it's got berries and corn and it's MINE, avian scum!

jpaskaruk,

@ai6yr

My wife seems to think the birds won't want to fly down into the thing but that seems a bit wishful to me. It's not remotely threatening looking, just a nice bit of warning if any cats are nearby.

, , folks who do mental labour (ie. programming): What do you listen to while working, and why?

When I was young I could work while listening to any music; even with my lyrics obsession it just helped me flow.

Round 40ish I found that I could no longer listen to music with vocals cause I could no longer "tune it out." So now it's Jazz, some Electronic music which is not really my thing.

Weirdly, there are some podcasts I can work while they're on. Uninteresting ones.

jpaskaruk,

@IzabelaKaramia

Classical used to put me to sleep reliably and that was about it, but I actually, it was kind of a joke at first, but I threw on a random Wagner aria a few weeks ago while I was doing a bit of ranting into my phone and it was very fun.

I'm starting to understand Opera now, on a gut level at least, and will definitely be using it when I need some ironic gravitas in the future. :>

I find Latin music great too actually, especially Brazil. Didn't appreciate any of this as a kid.

"I hope Twitter implodes!" I don't. I hope someone else takes over & the site returns to how it was before. I have spent years of my life posting over there. It's like losing a close friend that introduced me to all of my other friends. It sucks & I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm sad about that.

jpaskaruk,

@roxiqt

I have a friend or two that I don't hang out with anymore. I miss who I used to think they were, but I have learned that I was deluding myself.

You will learn soon that you were deluding yourself about Reddit being anyone's friend but The Capital.

They applied a formula of bait and switch along with psychological manipulation to you, and extracted your labour. That's what happened.
