Since leaving Twitter, I've been trying to figure out what my journalism-y socials look like. (Threads: A sad Potemkin village where I just share articles. Bluesky: A fun, bitchy hotel cafeteria that still seems ill-suited to news.) I've been trying to use Mastodon for more hard news stuff, but I'm having a hard time getting my feed to be both active and relevant.

So I'm trying a few experiments to see if I can rejig my good. If you've got good journalism follow suggestions, send em my way.

I went to bed skeptical that Prigozhin was going to do much more than make a show of force in Rostov, but now we've got soldiers taking up positions on the highway to Moscow.

I regret sleeping in!

A missile strike on the al-Ahli hospital in Gaza has killed at least 500, according to local authorities. Palestinian Authority, Hamas, and Egypt all say it was an Israeli airstrike. Israel isn't confirming that, says they're investigating but that they warned the hospital to evacuate days ago. (Bombing hospitals is against international law, regardless of the warnings.)

Today, after months of work, we're releasing Far and Widening — a study of polarization in Canada. (With lots of lessons for other rich countries.) Give it a read: https://ppforum.ca/publications/polarization-democracy-canada/

Plenty of reports on Russian Telegram channels of national guard units being mobilized ahead of a possible assault or coup attempt by Wagner Group forces. Stunning developments.

Meta is making good on its threat to kill news sharing in Canada.

The tldr of the whole thing: The Trudeau government wants an indirect link tax, Meta/Google want to stop the contagion of these policies from reaching the U.S. and Europe, and now Trudeau benefits politically from a war with the tech giants.

Caught inbetween are the news outlets that are about to face a huge drop in traffic.

Explosion on the Rainbow Bridge connecting New York and Ontario at Niagara. Reports from the scene say a car crashed into the toll booth and exploded. Despite the misinformation machine on Twitter, there's no confirmation that this was a car bomb (though, of course, that's possible.) Niagara Gazette has some good reporting form the ground: https://www.niagara-gazette.com/news/local_news/update-witnesses-saw-smoke-fire-from-vehicle-at-rainbow-bridge/article_eb3ffec8-8957-11ee-93e5-cf9e52289455.html

Well it's 3:30am here in Kyiv and we've got our first very serious air raid alert. 9 Tu-95 long-range bombers took over about 30 minutes ago, meaning Russia is likely to launch a barrage of cruise missiles across the country.

The fallout of the celebration of a SS-Waffen officer should have been an invitation to unravel the past from the present. We didn't do that.

The queue at the Ukrainian border is truly wild. Nearly 20km of trucks lined up down a narrow highway en route into Ukraine. Polish farmers, protesting Ukrainian imports, are only allowing one truck through an hour — meaning some of these trucks could be sitting there for a week or more.

We've got some early exit polls coming in from . They show the far-right governing coalition might be on track to lose power.

An the (pro-Russian) Confederation party is on track to under-perform expectations, meaning they're unlikely to be the kingmaker some expected.

Shortly, representatives from the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing partnership are having a fireside chat with Condoleezza Rice, discussing emerging threats in the national security and intelligence space.

We'll have FBI director Christopher Wray; Australian intelligence chief Mike Burgess; New Zealand intelligence head Andrew Hampton; MI5 boss Ken McCallum; and Canadian Security Intelligence Service director David Vigneault.

I'll make some observations in this thread if it's interesting!

I tried to compile what we know about the al-Ahli hospital explosion. While the evidence is substantial that Hamas and its allies were responsible for the bombing, that doesn't absolve the fact that Israel has repeatedly conducted airstrikes against hospitals in Gaza. https://www.bugeyedandshameless.com/p/who-bombed-the-al-ahli-hospital
