Guess what? Any plastic marked with this symbol (for "recyclable") is not, in fact, recyclable. & stands for "OTHER" aka "everything else", and despite having a "recyclable" symbol in it, is not actually recyclable.

kelvin0mql,
@kelvin0mql@mastodon.hams.social avatar

@ai6yr
See, the problem is the plastics industry pulled a fast one. Here's the actual "Recycle" logo.

After that logo was in place, approved, established, the plastics industry came up with a SIMILAR marking for indicating what resin the plastic was comprised of.

It's technically not a "recyclable" symbol. It's a "what this shit is" symbol that does not match the literal "Recycle" logo.

They made it confusing on purpose, because evil.

So… People put stuff in their robots.txt to “prevent” malicious scraping of their data for machine learning purposes. I hope everybody understands that this is just a “please don’t take my data” sign on the front lawn. We should be creating heaps of adversarial data instead. Data suitable to taint those datasets.

kelvin0mql,
@kelvin0mql@mastodon.hams.social avatar

@nblr
You mean like websites just full of bull$#!+? I’m pretty sure there’s already plenty of that.

In fact, my theory as to why AI comes up with such lousy, wildly incorrect answers to questions is that it reads crap on websites with zero discernment whatsoever.

Wrote up my experience running a 100% CW POTA activation for the first time!

kelvin0mql,
@kelvin0mql@mastodon.hams.social avatar

@ai6yr @KC8JC
I have a differing opinion, based solely on my own experience (insignificant statistical sample size).

I've found almost every CW op out there will QRS if asked. But to the extent that I am able to decode their faster CW (be that software, wetware, or both) and complete the QSO, they're helping and encouraging me. I hear them thinking "You can do it, buddy." in my head.

Bear in mind, there are many CW ops who can copy 30wpm, but due to age (etc.) cannot work paddles that fast.

kelvin0mql,
@kelvin0mql@mastodon.hams.social avatar

@ai6yr @KC8JC
500-char problem again, dang it.

Anyway, due to dexterity issues that arise with age, it's not an unfair assumption that the other station may be able to copy faster than they can send. So I find it OK to assume they can unless they ask to QRS.

As for me, I tend to try to match their speed (maybe plus a few wpm)... even when I'm listening along as they work several faster stations in a row. I figure nothing wrong with giving them a li'l rest.

never forget: we didn’t ask for robot cars. when polled US majorities have always wanted action on climate, good public transit & safe streets. but our leaders act without our consent.

last year, 78% polled wanted increased investment in US passenger rail, a number that went to 80% among women and 82% in cities and 91% among Black people. this year, 76% polled in the US said they are afraid of self-driving cars & just 9% say they trust them and that number is declining year to year

kelvin0mql,
@kelvin0mql@mastodon.hams.social avatar

@seachanger
If everything went according to popular polls, there’d not be an Americans with Disabilities Act.

Go ahead & ask able-bodied people if they’d prefer to be allowed to park in the very closest spot. See how that goes.

Is the progress troubling? Yes. But self-driving cars will be a boon to people who can’t drive, & the majority of folks who CAN drive are absolutely hostile to the disabled.

kelvin0mql,
@kelvin0mql@mastodon.hams.social avatar

@seachanger
ADA didn't always have that much support. Esp not biz owners.

Polls are notorious for being crafted such as to get the results desired by whomever sponsored the poll.

My wife does not & cannot drive, & I will not live/drive forever. I've had disabled extended family (now gone). I'm not speaking for all, but for those like whom I know/knew.

More rail? Yes. More public trans? Yes. But also any & all autonomy, dignity, self-determination for affected folks, someday, please.

kelvin0mql,
@kelvin0mql@mastodon.hams.social avatar

@seachanger
Good thing you're so "don't tell other people how to mastodon".

Like I've said, I agree 100% on most you've said, including the concerns about self-driving cars. There are problems. Big problems.

I was just pointing out that for some people with certain challenges, "we didn't ask for robot cars" is a lot of speaking-for-everybody. Some did. Some absolutely did, and do, and will.

I know the block is coming, but I graciously invite you to be more resilient & gracious than that.

kelvin0mql,
@kelvin0mql@mastodon.hams.social avatar

@seachanger
Hard agree. So hard agree.

It's going to be complex.

The car-centric design of communities should come 1st, & should've long ago. Mad that it hasn't.

We ache for towns & cities where cars are never near bikes, pedestrians, heaven forbid strollers.

THEN, self-driving cars can be great for non-drivers who don't have a condo above the LRT (+ a million other examples).

...In a perfect world.

Won't get there in my lifetime, certainly. Hopefully in yours.

In THEORY, the for is a wonderful idea.

In practice, I have not seen it actually work even once.

I'm able to find my WP user from here in the mastodon.hams.social web UI, and can "Follow". But it doesn't show my headshot AVI - a plain WP logo instead.

Then, after doing said follow, I switch to WP and make a post. Come back here - do I see that post? Hell no.

So I DM from masto to WP. Does that DM show UP anywhere? Nope.

It dances around the edge of working.

kelvin0mql,
@kelvin0mql@mastodon.hams.social avatar

@kelvin0mql

@uastronomer

EARLY on, I had good luck with a different plugin. "Share On Mastodon".

With some finagling, & conversation with the author of the plugin, I could add an image to the Media Library, adding alt txt there, then if I selected that as the featured image, it would toot the post with pic, with alt txt, and then here in Mastodon I could boost it.

But that stopped working.

I'm tempted to remove all the plugins, re-install this one, and try to get it working again.

Oh, shoot.

Select All, Copy, from the web browser's "pretty print" of the JSON was not the thing to do.

I also saw a Save button, and when I saved that, it was one long line starting with left-curly-brace, double-quote, subject...

So I've put THAT into the webfinger file.

Now it appears I gotta wait for some cache to expire.

kelvin0mql,
@kelvin0mql@mastodon.hams.social avatar

@ricmac
THERE we go... cache expired. Now webfinger.net sees something sensible.

Also displays it nicely.

I'm inclined (for my own sanity) to re-format the file the way webfinger.net displays it. That's how I'm used to seeing json in my day job.

kelvin0mql,
@kelvin0mql@mastodon.hams.social avatar

@ricmac
Oh boy, this webfinger thing just gets better and better.

I made a new post.

Did not show up in Mastodon feed.

Different browser, browsed to my WP site. Still shows a post from yesterday that I've since deleted. Grr.

Clicked the link "Show all posts by kelvin0mql" and this is what appears (please read alt txt)...

Honestly, I respect my wife SO much on this point. She took one driving lesson from her mother (older sister also in the car), drove over a curb & onto a sidewalk, and immediately decided this was not for her. Never been licensed.

It is my honor and pleasure to chauffeur her anywhere she needs to go. I take it deadly seriously.
