Another option, and that works in mas.to is after you have the list of instances. You have to put them in a CSV file.
Then you go to Preferences>Import and Export > Import
Then you select the "blocking list" as in the picture, and you import the list of instances and accounts to block.

The folks advocating that we Federate with keep trying to tell us that Federating with Meta will make no difference.

The argument is that Meta can already scrape the entire Fediverse, and probably are. Meta will gain nothing by Federating that they couldn't otherwise get.

This argument is false, and folks need to stop perpetuating it. There is immense value for Meta in federation and we shouldn't give it to them. We should

@fancysandwiches I can agree, but I think it is a lost struggle. More after the admins of big instances made the meeting with Meta.
I just tried to argue a couple of times, and... after I see the answers, I don't see any reason to invest energy on that.

    An update on https://notmeta.social, the server that defederates .

    It is up and running -- and everything is functioning great!

    However, it is not yet open for registrations. I have a little more configuring to do, particularly with the TOS. However, it will be open and available to more people soon 🎉

    Here's what the landing page currently looks like. I might eventually change the background image -- I want something more welcoming and positive 😊

    @atomicpoet As a user, what is the difference in terms of data protection if I join this server, or I remain in my actual instance and block by hand all Meta instances? I don't grasp that yet.

    I agree with this take on proposals to block 's rumoured -based service. We should encourage adoption of this defederated approach, even if there is a risk that Meta will try it.

    @nicolas yes, but at the same time as a user of lemmy or kbin you will be federated to the meta instances. As good as I know there is in those plattforms no way for the user to block a instance in a bidirectional way. That means, the actual plattforms don't offer protection against surveillance capitalism at the user level.

    A lot of genuine concerns raised across the around , etc today.

    Is it good they're using ActivityPub? I'd argue yes.

    Is it bad they'd almost instantly dominate the Fediverse overnight? Yes.

    Blocking people/servers isn't the solution in my opinion, but then censorship triggers alarms in my head.

    Seizing the means of production and putting Meta under public ownership and democratic control is the solution we should want.

    They disappeared from the web and from the official mastodon app, not from feedlab I realized later.
    After somebody answered one of my messages, they returned, although partially. (I see now less than in fediapp... but it is fine.. I was able to answer a question I got).

    I'm reading lots of wasted words regarding (Farcebook) and the , and NDAs. Here's the fact: no one knows anything. It is all blustering and hot air.

    IF meta are speaking to people about how the fediverse works, the NDA (non disclosure agreement) will not allow anyone to discuss or admit it's happening. Otherwise they would get their ass sued. That's the whole point of an NDA.

    Sit back, relax, and know that if Meta does join, you have the power to opt out of their crap

    I expect that here will federate with the servers, as it federates with just about everyone short of CSA or active DoS attacks. And that's fine with me.

    On the other hand, I'm very sympathetic to those who decide otherwise, and are unwilling to federate with the Meta servers on the basis that Meta has a history of being evil, and are almost certainly up to something undesirable. So their not-federating is also fine with me.

    One of the great things about the is that different servers have different policies! There's no need to talk everyone else into being the same...

    But the NDA meeting is another issue... it is about trust.

    So Meta (Facebook/Instagram) want to get into the Mastodon space.

Eben if the boss of his/her instance in one of the bros taking part in meetings with Meta after signing a NDA, as a single user can block the meta instances without to move to other instance.
