So Meta (Facebook/Instagram) want to get into the Mastodon space.

Will it work? Will people prefer that certain-to-be-unfederated federation?

Here's a Reddit screenshot that is an interesting take on where things are with Mastodon and concerns moving forward.

With 1.3 mn active users, is but an ant in comparison to the 3,000 mn users of .

was created as a macho website and it's become a toxic space.

Maybe the should have a vote if it really wants to be hooked up to such a place?

Any individuals would still be free to join.

If were , I'm sure about the vote.
is in the same league, though.

does not mean that corporations can all join, regardless of their behavior + agenda.

@HistoPol means they can share when they follow the license rules. There are big, murky players in the world, like Red Hat (owned by IBM), which has an implicit “your money is not welcome when you exercise your GPL rights” policy for years, and is making that explicit now. Implicit is, well, murky, but you can't do anything. Explicit is a clear GPL violation, and then the FSF community can do something.

Facebook and even more so Twitter are shitty places, indeed, and on purpose.

Thanks for your reply.

Re-reading my post it becomes evident to me that the 500k were not enough.

What I meant was a vote on whether "we", the , want to be hooked up with servers, i. e. defederate once they go online:

If we do not , all but the largest instances will become hardly viable:

    @HistoPol @empiricism I'm not sure whether I understand well, but as a user you can block an instance.

    @empiricism

    Ah, yes, that might become necessary...

    Is there a list already or a "mapping tool", I saw once one on @davetroy's instance.

    But then, maybe we just need a feature to block whole instances on an account basis?

    IMO, a instance should only be opt-in.
    I'd take opt-out as 2nd best, too, though.

    kjr,

    @HistoPol @empiricism @davetroy I am not sure whether I have understood well, but as a user you can block an instance.

    empiricism,

    @kjr @HistoPol @davetroy

    Sure! I will work it all out as I go along. If becomes a problem I will block them.

    kjr,

    @empiricism @HistoPol @davetroy yes, but I mean not only as an instance. The answer was more for @HistoPol . Eben if the boss of his/her instance in one of the bros taking part in meetings with Meta after signing a NDA, as a single user can block the meta instances without to move to other instance.

    HistoPol,
    @HistoPol@mastodon.social avatar

    Thanks for joiningin, @kjr.

    Yes, this is exactly what I intend to do, all(?) instances.
    Are there any so far?
    How do I block a complete instance?
    @empiricism @davetroy

    kjr,

    @HistoPol @empiricism @davetroy
    Hi, mmm... I'm not sure how. I can do it in qoto, but maybe the administrator implemented it.
    My other account is in hed.im @kjr
    There I can do it too
    but here with me is somebody with an account in mas.to, and there they don't have the function, or we cannot find it.
    You will need to check in mastodon.social

    kjr,

    @HistoPol @empiricism @davetroy @kjr
    If that helps, I show you how can I block mastodon.social from my account.
    I have opened your profile as you see. Then I select from the ... of a post, the option as in the picture

    kjr,

    @HistoPol @empiricism @davetroy

    Another option, and that works in mas.to is after you have the list of instances. You have to put them in a CSV file.
    Then you go to Preferences>Import and Export > Import
    Then you select the "blocking list" as in the picture, and you import the list of instances and accounts to block.
