Oh, nice, looks like the Fosstodon instance (@fosstodon) silenced my profile.

https://fosstodon.org/@JoshStrobl/110688888195898758

I guess it tells you more about “FOSS”todon than anything else that they chose to block a human rights activist/privacy advocate who wakes up and works at a not-for-profit on free and open software every day. Maybe if I were to work at Google and hack on a hobby open source project in the evenings I’d be acceptable?

smh

Edit: “silenced” not “blocked (i.e., suspended)”

paul,

@maegul @aral unfortunately this is what happens when mods and admins think they know what's "best" for all their users.

Pro-tip, users are quite capable of figuring out who they want to follow/mute or block themselves without some overzealous mod or admin deciding for them.

Photograph: Paul White/UK Industries/Alamy The government’s plans to hit net zero have been comprehensively criticised in a withering report by its own advisers that says targets are being missed on nearly every front. Fewer homes were insulated last year under the government-backed scheme than the year before, despite soaring energy bills and a cost of living crisis. There is little progress on transport emissions, no coherent programme for behaviour change, and still no decision on hydrogen for home heating. Meanwhile the installation of new wind and solar farms and the upgrading of the electricity grid are still too slow to meet net zero, according to the Climate Change Committee, which says that the lack of urgency of government and a failure of political leadership means progress has stalled.

A reasonable rule of thumb in UK is that if the Tax Payers Alliance doesn't like something, then it would likely benefit society;

to hear that they are against the four day week, leads me to think that the shadowy (corporate?) funders of the TPA are unhappy that might be able to spend a little more time thinking about the inequities of the current system & a little less time being ground down by the world of .

paul,

@GhostOnTheHalfShell @ChrisMayLA6 probably because the thinking is if we've got an extra day a week, we might start planning some kind of revolution...

In case you missed it, this is an image from last year of the cluster munitions that Russia shot at civilians, just in the city of Kharkiv.

paul,

@anneapplebaum all I see here are rocket motors from GRAD rockets.

Which ones are cluster munitions?

Ukraine have already used cluster munitions, especially with petal mines fired over Donetsk city, aimed purely at maiming civilians, and I suspect Russia has done the same for remote mining purposes.

But stop lying to try and make a point, makes you look rather uncredible.

But then you were saying two weeks ago Putin was about to be overthrown... Wrong about that too.

Mastodon went from 1.2M active users last week to 1.8M active users this week. That's not 70M users overnight, but it's something! 🙂

paul,

@danielton @Just_Jen @Nour @DanFox @Gargron yeah classic over-reaction without a lot of thought put into it.

As proponents of open standards to communicate, we should be happy big corp X want to use these standards.

Just imagine how easy it will be for people who use Threads to get away from the ads and algorithm once they realise they can follow all the same people they want to follow from something like Mastodon - without the ads, algorithm and tracking.

⚠️ We have just released important security fixes for the server software. Versions 4.1.3, 4.0.5, 3.5.9, as well as a new nightly are available now to make upgrading quick and painless. Please upgrade as soon as possible!

paul,

@Mastodon three servers all upgraded.

Seamless on all of them! Thanks.

paul,

@NinaBernstein1 lol nobody in Russia takes this guy seriously, yet western media try and make him out as being some sort of opposition figure, of course we know why.

He polls around 2%.

The only thing he's got going for him is the possibility for being another Juan Guaidó, which will provide a few years of comedy value.

What Russia needs is the RSFSR.

petergleick, to random

A turning point. Mastodon is a far better source of information on the Russian situation now than Twitter. Follow the Russia and Ukraine hashtags.

Starting to look like civil war in . Have both sides got nukes? Not sure this is good news even for the Ukrainians.

https://edition.cnn.com/europe/live-news/russia-ukraine-war-news-06-24-23/index.html

paul,

@mrundkvist Wagner has no nukes and is entirely dependent on the MoD for supplies. Plus they're outnumbered 20 to 1.

Prigozhin just doesn't like Shoigu.

Or its just a show to try and prompt Ukraine into commiting more forces to their offensive and cover up large Russian troop movements.

paul,

@mrundkvist nobody in Russia talks about nukes... Its honestly a western obsession.

@fury @Girlparts coulda been anything. Lots of things make banging noises underwater.

Heck there's recordings of artic ice cracking from the middle of the Pacific!

paul, to fediverse

A lot of genuine concerns raised across the around , etc today.

Is it good they're using ActivityPub? I'd argue yes.

Is it bad they'd almost instantly dominate the Fediverse overnight? Yes.

Blocking people/servers isn't the solution in my opinion, but then censorship triggers alarms in my head.

Seizing the means of production and putting Meta under public ownership and democratic control is the solution we should want.

paul,

@50gp nah* cuz posts will only be pushed for those accounts you or someone on your server is following.

*Assuming they don't connect to relays you use.

Months ago I said (and ) has issue, and I was attacked for it.
I said we need a standard. A way to hold admins accountable.
I said we shouldn't replace one with many smaller ones.
But here we are. Admins can't stop defederating other instances over the most absurd reasons.
The biggest enemy of the fediverse is itself.

https://mastodon.ar.al/@aral/110570412099967351

paul,

@hirad @marathon yep that's exactly it.

And then they force their rules on potentially unsuspecting members who suddenly find themselves cut off from half the people they're following. 🙃

Sign up for my fun e-mail server.... Six months later can't use it to e-mail Gmail anymore... Utterly stupid.

choyer, to fediverse en-gb

Having second thoughts about my self-hosted instance, it’s just too much of a resource hog for a single user / small instance on a 4 core / 4G vServer if you want to run other stuff ( is live, to be installed!) as well. On the other hand it is very nice that the software is stable, reliable and well designed. So either I need to move to a bigger server or decommission my self-hosted profile and look into other options for micro / macro blogging self-hosting again. I did like but the current version doesn’t install on my properly. Tried and - weren’t my thing, can’t get over the design. I do like and its possibilities but it is a bit clunky at times and I have some doubts if protocols other than the quasi standard have much of a main stream future which kinda could make the additional Friendica features a little islandish. Same applies to which I only start testing. Leaves and which could be good options but not sure about the reliability and gameplan there, I don’t want to tinker every night on my server so probably need to become a little more stable first, seems to have no current version on YunoHost, so need to explore other install options… Any thoughts very welcome! @fediversenews @fediversede

paul,

@choyer @fediversede @fediversenews yeah ideally Mastodon would have some form of lite-mode which won't cache remote media.

But I've run it on 2 vCPU, 4GB, machine before with a day media retention and would use around 30GB of disk space.

Currently running three Mastodon instances on a single machine with 3 vCPU and 8GB of RAM, again using around 20-30GB of disk space per instance.

It's mainly disk space that's the issue, but unless we get options for a hourly media cache retention.

The dam is under Russian control.

It's destruction mostly floods Russian controlled areas and washes away Russian fortifications.

It lowers the water level where could cross the Dnieper at the ZNPP during their offensive.

It can deprive Crimea of water.

Last summer we saw Ukraine fire dozens of HIMARS into the dam.

has zero military incentive to destroy the dam. Ukraine has plenty, especially knowing they can just blame Russia and the West will repeat it.

paul,

@darthstar

Russians are evil? Racist nonsense, come back when you have an argument.

paul,

@darthstar can say exactly the same about the Armed Forces of Ukraine, demonstrated by their attacks on Donbass for nine years, their assassinations of journalists, terrorist attacks and raids into Belgorod.

paul,

@darthstar if Donbass is Ukraine why has Ukraine been bombing the place for nine years? Says a lot right?

The "Freedom" groups were a bunch of Polish and Ukrainian mercenaries. With western equipment.

How about recognising both sides for what they are instead of perpetuatung eternal war.

    Is the US Empire going to collapse due to civil war at home? 🤔

    One half of the population think the other half are literal fascists. And that half think the other half are authoritarian tofu-eating wokerati communists or something...
