I've been on a few other instances and places online, but I decided I wanted to connect more with what's going on in Scotland (since that's where I live). I'm learning #embroidery (in a very amateur way).

This is what I've been working on (very intermittently, because there was lots of procrastination) since late December. This red squirrel is hand based on a model at the Canon website designed by Katsuyuki Shiga https://creativepark.canon/en/contents/CNT-0025964/index.html but somehow mine ended up much curvier.

lauravivanco,

@lan It's called tambour embroidery in English. I haven't gone through all of these videos, but they seem to go into a lot of detail so they might be what you're looking for: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLddYGsLjClC2gEpbEsEzbzCYjl44x2r7i

The Royal School of Needlework says

"In India embroiderers use a form of tambour called ari which is similar but is worked from the front of the fabric and when beading the beads are loaded onto the ari hook, rather than strung onto the thread." https://rsnstitchbank.org/?/technique/tambour

#UKPolitics #GazaGenocide

lauravivanco,

@fkamiah17 Yes, as @Lassielmr says, there are plenty of problems that will need to be addressed for this to work https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/mar/07/gaza-floating-port-aid-palestinians-impact

The sea delivery that might arrive this weekend would be a kind of test delivery, by a charity, and yes, it seems they'd have to throw the aid onto the shore as there aren't yet facilities for docking: https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/eu-explores-safe-maritime-corridor-from-cyprus-to-gaza-to-transport-urgent-aid/ar-BB1juucF

lauravivanco,

@fkamiah17 Well, I suppose we'll have to wait and see. The BBC is reporting that

A maritime aid corridor to Gaza could begin operating this weekend with a test shipment leaving Cyprus as early as Friday, Ursula von der Leyen says.

[...]

The pilot shipment of aid would come in coordination with the United Arab Emirates and the World Central Kitchen aid organisation, she said.

@RomanceReviews The term "isomorphism" wasn't helping me so I just tried to focus on the descriptions and got the general idea that there was a mix of peer pressure, seeing others succeed, having no excuse once there was a lower risk way of doing business and maybe some other things. Which, as you say, does not constitute understanding it "in depth"! But it was good enough for me 😸 @herhandsmyhands @romancelandia

@MadeyeTheCarnaptious @CloudyMrs @Snoweider Here's another benefit of not living in England: "Coeliac patients in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are less at risk of long-term health complications because they can access free gluten-free bread, pasta and flour." I assume there's still some risk, as people might eat some other foods they don't get for free, so the article's not necessarily wrong to describe this as a UK issue. was barking at something in the garden. Upon investigation I discovered this chap(ess) sitting on the garden fence.

I know, I know, Grey Squirrels are two a penny in the city. However, still nice when they come to the garden. Not his/her fault they are an invasive species.

lauravivanco,

@fitheach That squirrel's looking really plump and insulated for winter, and with the ears tucked in so as not to catch a chill. 🐿️ 🧣 🧥

lauravivanco,

@fitheach They will definitely raid bird feeders! But they'll also eat lots of plants in gardens ( https://www.rhs.org.uk/biodiversity/grey-squirrels )

Gove is behind this increasingly restrictive and undoubtedly batshit push for legislation against anti British sentiment. You'd have to be daft to think he doesn't have an eye on Scotland as he drafts it. Look out for SNP, ALBA Scottish Greens, and anyone who supports Scottish independence to be caught in the net. This is by design and won't come as a surprise to anyone who pays attention. https://www.opendemocracy.net/en/rishi-sunak-prevent-extreme-hatred-britain/

lauravivanco,

@CloudyMrs @MadeyeTheCarnaptious And as has been mentioned on here by some people, presumably all LibDems because they're in favour of an alternative to first-past-the-post, and definitely Republic and any other groups which campaign against having an unelected Head of State.

lauravivanco,

@CloudyMrs @MadeyeTheCarnaptious I mean, looking at the proposed definition, “Extremism is the promotion or advancement of any ideology which aims to overturn or undermine the UK’s system of parliamentary democracy, its institutions and values.” (https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/nov/04/plans-to-redefine-extremism-would-include-undermining-uk-values ) this might mean anyone not supporting the established Church, including anyone saying we should have a fully elected upper House, people who don't wear red poppies....

A question for embroiderers (especially historical embroiderers): The stitches on this coif that look kinda like a fishtail braid, is that two parallel rows of stem stitch worked in opposite directions, or is it something else?

    https://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O357607/coif-unknown/?carousel-image=2020MT5328

    lauravivanco,

@Fredatron I took a look at my stitch dictionary and the middle part looks a bit like it could be raised chain stitch: https://rsnstitchbank.org/stitch/raised-chain-band-stitch with a "ladder" that's a lot wider than the chains, and then separate bands of normal chain stitch worked up the sides?

Or am I looking in the wrong place?

It’s as ridiculous as it sounds!

I’m not sure why men’s chess and women’s chess exist as separate categories in the first place – probably male insecurity – but it seems it’s a great opportunity for the International Chess Federation (FIDE) to be transphobic 😳

From Erin Reed on Substack: https://open.substack.com/pub/erininthemorn/p/international-chess-org-trans-women

The new section of FIDE’s Handbook: https://handbook.fide.com/chapter/TransgenderRegulations

    lauravivanco,

@transponderings There isn't a "men's chess" championship: "the world championship is open to all human players" but "there are separate championships for women, under-20s and lower age groups, and seniors; as well as one for computers" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Chess_Championship ). I think the specialised championships arose as a way to increase visibility for players from, and encourage involvement by, players in those groups since the original championship was dominated by men.

    lauravivanco,

@masukomi @transponderings But women were not beating the men + there is still nothing stopping people from any of the specialised groups from competing in the world championship as long as they qualify. My impression is that the Women's World Chess Championship is like affirmative action, designed to help women reach higher rankings + play professionally. See https://theconversation.com/why-theres-a-separate-world-chess-championship-for-women-129293 If that's so, excluding trans women is about not giving them visibility etc.
