Early on in dating my future wife, I noticed that even though she's objectively brilliant, she doesn't pay a whole lot of attention to her environment. One of my favorite things to do is randomly buy her flowers and place them somewhere in plain view in the house and see how long it takes her to notice them. We're going on day 3 right now for a bouquet on the kitchen counter. 💐 🤣

I remember back in college in the 90s having a lot of difficulty with the required length of writing assignments. I used all the tricks of squishing margins and larger font to make whatever it was I wrote look like there was more to it than there was. Now, I'm in college again in the 20s, and I have writing assignments. I don't know if the requirements have changed or I have, but writing assignments of at least 300 words? I can write you 300 words about my breakfast. Maybe I just talk too much.

@mike Oh god, same. I struggled to meet the required word count in undergrad, but now I'm regularly writing 5000 words for a 3000-word report and panic-culling 2000 of them. Thank goodness for appendices?

I love the Notes feature in . Seriously, I use it all the time. Sometimes I just add quick notes in a panel. Sometimes I tile a full tab with another page so it's more of a full sized document. When I change computers or even fire up @Vivaldi on my phone, my notes are there. I can do formatting and even embed images. Seriously, it's hard to overstate how useful this feature is to me.

I need a bunch of historical weather data. After some dead ends, I've found Open-Meteo:

  • years of data
  • hourly observations
  • all the metrics, even weird ones
  • downloadable as CSV
  • API available
  • free for non-commercial use

I'm in total shock. This is the greatest service of all time, and it's been right here all along --> @openmeteo

Sometimes you sprinkle a little extra masala on something, to make it more palatable, to draw interest.

But if you overdo the masala, you'll make everyone sneeze. Your something will become an irritant, and people will hate and avoid it.

My knowledge of could be better (read: it’s atrocious) can anyone recommend any resources for learning PHP for absolute beginners? I’m not a developer, I know a little html/css, nothing about JS and enough PHP to be dangerous.

We developed the habit of spelling W-A-L-K each time we want to say "walk" because if JJ hears the word, he leaps up, runs to the door, wags his tail and waits.

Could you say no to this face?

I think he now knows what "W-A-L-K" means because I spelled it out, and he's by the door demanding a you-know-what.

I guess I'm going for a walk.

Final exam completed, and it looks like my GPA is intact. The hardest part of the class I think was using the virtual computer simulator. Didn't strike me as "intuitive". The first time I used it I was supposed to install a couple SATA drives. Took me 20+ minutes to find the drive bays. Not install anything, just find the bay the drives were supposed to go into. Even on my final, I accidentally uninstalled an entire motherboard instead of the graphics card I was aiming for. Never done that IRL.

Some women reported that vaccinating against covid or the flu messed with their cycles (not permanently - just for a cycle or two, I think).

There was some discussion about how your immune responses - when you're sick, or when you've just been vaccinated - might be the cause.

So if you were exposed to pollutants that were constantly triggering your body's defences, that might explain your irregular cycles!

@WhippoorwillSong @urusan I always bought the line that our bodies are completely unpredictable, because science doesn't have many answers for us.

But I'm rethinking that now. How can it make sense for a biological process to be a complete mystery and entirely non-deterministic?

I think it's more likely the case that Big Science just wasn't very curious about it. :P

Since the beginning of the recent spam attack https://mastodon.social/@Gargron/111953045633249137, I have been monitoring Masto.host and, when possible, taking action to mitigate the effects of this attack.

All actions I made should have minimal impact. Still, in cases where that was not so I have communicated those actions to the admins. So, if you have not received my email, no action was taken on your server.

Currently sleeping the sleep of the righteous, @andrew was up way too late building tools to fend off the current wave of fedi spam, playing whack-a-mole with bad accounts, and getting fedi friends up and running with their own blocklists.

I’d like to convene a discussion this week or next to do a mini retro on this attack and some work around fedi spam fighting tools. If you’re interested in the discussion, @ me your email or send one to spamretro at hypatia dot ca and I’ll loop you in on it 🙏

Would love to have a proper UR/UX person on the call, I’m a mere amateur at that part 😅

    @thelinuxcast Yeah, it's craptacular. I noticed your handle in a number of reports we got. It's such a pain.

    If the dodgy accounts are all using the same providers of disposable email addresses (as I've heard they are) it would be good if all the instance admins prevented new signups with those addresses. Or even just temporarily restrict signups.

    In the mean time, we'll keep playing whack-a-mole. A horrible non-fun version where there are no prizes, only pain. Lol.
