There's lots we can be doing, like supporting the student encampments and writing to these universities and our MPs.

Here’s an email and phone script to call on your MP to ask them to increase pressure and establish an immediate, two-way embargo on Israeli-Canadian military trade:
https://armsembargonow.ca/actnow/

People are also organizing with their neighbours in communities across Canada to call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, among other key demands from the Palestinian Youth Movement.

Are there any folks connected to the science and tech sector who've publicly refused to sign this letter opposing increases to #capitalgains taxes? Or maybe there's another open letter circulating that supports capital gains or wealth taxes?

It's disappointing to see folks from Abcellera sign the letter, but fortunately I didn't see many other orgs from the biotech industry.

Everyone should be calling and emailing their MPs to demand a . These calls are easy to do and are getting heard!

Today an intern in Steven Guilbeault’s office called me back and told me he can’t call for a ceasefire because he’s part of the government (!?). I tried to ask whether there’s some party rule that allows back-benchers but not cabinet ministers to sign an open letter, but she was unable to explain further.

What do other people with training in or think of the use of as a metaphor? I've always found it super irritating, but maybe other scientists love it?

For example, I'm now seeing it used in the context of social movement organizing and find this kind of usage very distracting, even though the concept they're trying to describe probably makes a lot of sense.

20 yrs ago I was a new PhD student with an $18K/y scholarship, which increased to $30K/y when I managed to get a CGS-D scholarship from CIHR (+ $2K top-up from my supervisor’s research grant). Despite 52% inflation, many grad students are now making less than I did, and most post-docs are paid far less than the $70K/y I made with an NSERC-IRDF at Tekmira ($ABUS) in 2009.

Grad students and post-docs are the future of science and need a living wage!!
