Anyone know if there's more recent news on this whole HDMI standoff?

I am fully in support of dropping HDMI and using DisplayPort instead.

"That's a nice business you got there. Would be a shame if Government Agency investigated you for non-compliance of Important Regulation"

Is that an acceptable government "persuading" to get a person or business to remove content (speech) that the government doesn't like?

If you are coming from Windows, I do highly recommend the Cinnamon desktop.

With Linux, you get more choices... which can bring confusion because you aren't used to that with Windows.

The Cinnamon desktop environment is one of perhaps six major desktop environment options, with many more less used options available, too.

Cinnamon is the desktop environment developed by Linux Mint, so is default with that, but you can install and use it easily on many Linux "distos" (distributions of software that are bundled together).

Linux Mint Debian Edition is a good place to get started.

It would be great if regular people cared and stopped using ... but most don't seem to care or have any curiosity about alternatives.

I do sell quite a few refurbished computers with , but it is tiny numbers compared to the Windows computers I sell and work on.

We almost have this with the Cinnamon desktop, as the start menu, window controls and shortcut keys are pretty much the same as what regular people loved and were familiar with on Windows XP and Windows 7.

I really do think it is a mindset issue and that no matter how hard you try, people go with what everyone else is using. If that's Windows, then that is what they use.

It is an unthinking mentality.

I do believe that independent video creators have done immense service in challenging this mentality as now it is somewhat likely that people have seen at least some tech videos of people using or recommending alternatives to Microsoft Windows, most prominently Linux.

So the tide is changing... just frustrating slow for me as I have been using Linux for 20 years now.

We're working on a website re-design. Made some decisions today. Will be simplifying the design concept to cards representing each of the website sections and then a search that eliminates cards that do not match the search.

This allowed us to remove the bulky menus that the previous version of the website had and simplify the primary use of the website, which is to quickly find information.

Will be using , and

Windows boot issues are so confusing compared to Linux and BSD.

I believe I fixed the problem with this command from the command prompt while booting the Windows installer USB:

bcdboot C:windows

After doing that and rebooting, it worked and started into Windows normally.

I just replaced a keyboard in a ThinkPad T450 laptop. Some of the keys were not working. When I took the keyboard out to re-seat the connection and test it, I noticed there was some sticky residue likely from a liquid spill.

Replacing the keyboard with another used keyboard fixed the problem of some of the keys not working, so I isolated the problem to the keyboard part and not the ribbon cable connection or other cause.

Just set up user accounts for a client on a Nextcloud server that we are hosting for them.

I really like the concept of hosting open source applications for businesses and organizations.

I believe this is the second paying account we have, with another to be added soon. The first paying account was for a hosted Gitea (github alternative). The next one will be a custom website we programmed with the Lapis web framework (Lua and nginx).

Server SAS disks are expensive! However, it could be worth getting a few to increase my storage to make my new Proxmox server worthwhile.

matthew,
@matthew@social.retroedge.tech avatar

Used SAS HDDs can be fairly inexpensive. If you server already has SAS connections, it would probably be worth using them.

I've been getting a lot out of Proxmox lately. It really does make hosting services, for ourselves and others, much easier.

I am also starting it to use it at one of the places I do SysAdmin contracting.

Do share your experience with us!
