Residential wind has to have its moment someday, but when?

Check out our video on it, here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SQKHJm7vd4E&feature=youtu.be

Or check out the page on our website, here: https://undecidedmf.com/how-we-solved-the-home-wind-turbine-problem/

mikej,
@mikej@mastodon.online avatar

@bluGill @mattferrell Except for the fact that most people can't/won't install a 150' tower to get into clean air, which was sort of the point of the video. Yes, it's less efficient, but it's more efficient than nothing which may be the alternative.

is a very red state. It’s also a powerhouse

"Iowa has been a wind energy behemoth for decades. Those spinning turbines powered 62% of Iowa’s electricity in 2022, according to the Energy Information Administration. It’s the second-largest producer of wind power in the country behind Texas, and it consumes the most wind power in the nation."

mikej,
@mikej@mastodon.online avatar

@bluGill @CelloMomOnCars The Republican thinking on it is, "Democrats care more about fluffy little bunnies than people, so you can really stick it to those environmentalist weirdos by drilling for more oil and rolling coal."

There's no actual policy besides piss off dems.

@glennf The 175s aren't the tiny embraers you think of when you hear that name. A friend of mine used to drive one for Alaska (now works moving 737s around for Boeing.)

I watched The Holdovers and it was a great slow burn of a movie, but what I loved most was it nailed the 1970s so perfectly, starting with fake audio pops in the background sound, a perfectly fake grainy film quality, a 4:3 like aspect ratio, and having characters smoking literally anywhere. Also, filming in Boston meant everything already looked old (I'm sure they CGI'd out billboards/signs).

Honestly, it nailed the period better than Tarantino did in the LA movie a few years back.

mikej,
@mikej@mastodon.online avatar

@mathowie So it emulates having a bad print, not 70s filmmaking.

mikej,

@mattblaze I'm much more annoyed by too many hashtags than not enough. Usually it's a mediocre artist who adds a hashtag for every single thing in the picture. I saw one in my timeline with 60 hashtags. Sixty! Better to have no hashtags than that many.

mikej,
@mikej@mastodon.online avatar

@kopper @johnshirley2024 Yes you CAN do it all yourself, the question is do you want to and is it worth your time and money?

It's really hard to just do it all yourself from the back of a van going to the next town to do a show.

Before you sign a contract you find out what they are giving you and what you give in return. Being able to think about music instead of trying to get your money out of paypal has an actual value. Just don't overpay for it.

@johnshirley2024 It's good that they took these cases. It would be much worse had they not.

Case 1, ease of restrictions on getting mifepristone. A federal judge already ruled against making it easy to get. If it didn't go to the Supremes, that would be the last word on the subject. Thomas and Alito voted against hearing the case and thereby keeping stronger regulation.

Okay crowd.

What on earth is this machine?

It's not a KayPro 1/2/4, Northstar, TRS-80, Compaq, Osbourne, or Zenith.

Twin 5.25" full-height drives mounted either size of a small CRT. Almost portable form factor but not actually portable.

Some kind of forgotten S-100 clone from the early 80s? Closest seems to be an "Kaycomp II" prototype but still not 100%.

The image on the CRT is superimposed, almost certainly monochrome.

(depending on how much power costs). Hooked a "watt meter" in the 110v cord to my 2014 electric smart car, and have been buzzing around San Francisco for a couple of days.

measured ~3 miles per kWh, and this site said 35cents/kWh in San Francisco last month. (2x national avg)

Mulling my planned camera upgrade that is happening this month.

Body will be either a Canon R6 Mark II or R8.

Lenses… undecided. If I pick the R6 Mark II, I can only get the kit lens (RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM, non-L-series)

If I pick the R8:

Choice 1: RF 24-50mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM, with a RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM (neither are L series)

Choice 2: body only + RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM

Choice 3: body only + RF 14-35mm f/4 L IS USM

So many choices…

mikej,
@mikej@mastodon.online avatar

@kboyd The non profit I teach at is ~$250/yr for the dinghies, another ~$200 or so for keelboats. No day fee. And those prices are family membership.

So it is possible to sail cheaply, but we're pretty rare.

I just heard someone say "chocker block" instead of "chock-a-block." That's a new one to me.

A chock is a piece or block of wood, and "chock-a-block" is a nautical term "said of two blocks of tackle run so closely that they touch," according to Etymonline.

https://www.etymonline.com/word/chock-full#etymonline_v_11300

Surprisingly, it doesn't look like it's from the same "chock" as "chock-full."

mikej,
@mikej@mastodon.online avatar

@grammargirl These days sailors say "two blocked" (which I've had people misunderstand as "tube locked").
Common on Laser sailboats going upwind with the main trimmed all the way in so the block on the boom is touching the block on the traveler.

It's election day in much of the US. Today we vote mostly on a motley variety of state and local contests, less high profile nationally, but often with profound impact on the lives of local voters.

Elections don't happen without an army of poll workers and county officials. Please thank them when you see them today. They're you're neighbors, giving up their day to make sure you have a voice.
