    I came across another phrase with a fun origin this weekend: "over the transom."

    A transom is cross-beam, such as the beam at the top of a door.

    Here's the quotation from an editor at "Atlantic Monthly" that Etymonline has for the origin:

    "Mr. Weeks once said that some very interesting material comes from writers who, too shy to walk in and talk to the editor, just toss their manuscripts over the transom and run."

    https://www.etymonline.com/word/transom#etymonline_v_16895

    @grammargirl My guess is it's an American thing and OED always lags on USisms.

    mikej,
    @mikej@mastodon.online avatar

    @grammargirl OED online has "over the transom" and good definitions of the transom something would come in over. (2A & 2B at transom)

    mikej,
    @mikej@mastodon.online avatar

    @grammargirl Yes. Here's 2a & b, and over the transom.

    This sounds pretty awesome, especially compared to the X drought and Threads reticence to support publishers -> “Mozilla aims to convince publishers that Mastodon isn’t just another place they have to support, but one that could deliver on their objectives. As it learns from the publishers and other content creators what they want and need, it then intends to use that understanding to build features and drive efforts that can help them reach their audiences.” https://techcrunch.com/2023/11/03/why-mozilla-is-betting-on-a-decentralized-social-networking-future/?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cudGVjaG1lbWUuY29tLw&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAKSkHAVVumO1LJSMTfT8X6jFEzRM3LgYRuJ30yhcbhsDEvxKIfe7XGizGENpzhz3PfR-ImL0_oUR9DGheAFyZm_ruIIMfX9Ue1i_qLDuDihM6CcTHa8F-e0KIIvN6WGqOCIZVyKgdIE5ORkZ3TEnu0oQXVSO9tVVdoN6NBMwh6DW

    mikej,
    @mikej@mastodon.online avatar

    @ricmac This only works when the publishers' goals align with those of the consumers, and there are a lot of publishers whose only goal is forcing themselves on you.

    I may be the last person on the planet to discover this, but in recent versions of both iOS and MacOS, there's a "translate to English" option when you highlight/select text written in various languages. It's useful as a replacement for the "translate tweet" function that was on The Bad Place.

    @mattblaze I thought we already had translate built in here. Maybe just some servers don't turn it on?

    This shouldn't need to be said at this point, but given the new Speaker's apparent beliefs, it bears repeating:

    While there are weaknesses in US election infrastructure, there is simply no evidence whatsoever that the 2020 presidential election was "stolen" or that technical attacks in any way altered its outcome.

    58 of my colleagues and I wrote this shortly after these nonsensical conspiracy theories began to spread in 2020. It remains as true now as it was then. https://www.mattblaze.org/papers/election2020.pdf

    @pbump The issue of when votes are reported and what votes are outstanding is even more acute when there are many, or in the case of Washington all, ballots left that are VBM.

    Republicans have been fond of saying they were "winning" on election day when in reality their fates had been sealed days or weeks earlier.

    Just try to find more than 5 seconds of mention of Sidney Powell’s plea deal anywhere but CNN and MSNBC. And some wonder why MAGAs only get their information from FoxNews? No one else is publishing any for them. It’s insane and disgusting that we tolerate it. And we don’t even talk about that. Which is even more disgusting.

    mikej,
    @mikej@mastodon.online avatar

    @shoq One would think that when 19 people are charged with conspiracy, and people accused of conspiring start admitting that they were indeed conspiring, people might draw some conclusions about the other 18 people.
