Ok, I took a ride on a Bluebike e-bike and I'm a convert. Can anyone recommend a good guide to choosing an e-bike?

@itamarst@better.boston avatar

@misc https://camberville.ebikelibrary.org/ lets you try a bunch.

I got a Tern HSD, it's wonderful, vastly more comfortable than previous bike I owned, the ergonomics I have set up are very much like a classic BlueBike in terms of posture but it's very adjustable. Also has a Bosch drive which I find gives a pretty natural-feeling response to pedaling. And I find the cargo carrying aspect very useful, not using a trailer anymore for weekly groceries. Not cheap though!

I have a Cannondale Tesoro pedal-assist e-bike. My commute is about 5 miles with one long steep hill at the end. I'm ~5'8' with long legs; the medium-sized bike is a bit too small for me, so I'd recommend trying before you buy or get it from someplace like REI where you can return it.

With panniers, I can do a big grocery run (Turkey, etc, for Thanksgiving).

It's a comfortable ride (front suspension). I get 3-4 commutes out of a charge. It came with a rack and built-in F/R lights.

@misc this is a pretty good guide on questions to be considering as you look at different e-bikes: https://www.consumerreports.org/health/electric-bikes/buying-guide/

Bitcoin, less efficient than ever per block.
Consuming a broader percentage of USA electricity every year.

> “we estimate electricity usage from Bitcoin mining based in the United States to range from 25 TWh to 91 TWh. That estimate represents 0.6% to 2.3% of all United States electricity demand in 2023”

The irony of Wordpress, the self-described guardian of the open web, causing anyone who gives a shit to pull down their old Tumblrs and blogs to avoid getting sucked into the AI bullshit machine, is really something.

So, who should play the Beatles in the Biopics?

YakyuNightOwl,
@YakyuNightOwl@mastodon.world avatar

@RickiTarr Scarlett Johansson should play all four Beatles. She talked big about being able to play anyone. Let's see how she does. If she's good in those screentests, maybe she can play Brian Epstein and George Martin too.

Correct me if I’m wrong here, but I believe that if you self-host Wordpress, and you have the Jetpack plugin installed, Wordpress dot com gets a full copy of everything you post. Wonder if that content is also gonna get sold to AI shit generators.

There’s been a lot of talk about companies’ power as users post support for and report subsequent shadowbans.

We looked into it on Instagram—and found the platform:
⚠️ suppressed hashtags
⚠️ demoted photos of soldiers, tanks, and city ruins
⚠️ deleted captions without warning
⚠️ categorized comments criticizing Israel + supporting Palestine as “spam”
⚠️ limited users’ ability to appeal moderation decisions
⚠️ more.

@pluralistic which brings me back to your thread and your point. We had a loyal audience and literally had a subscription magazine. We were making documentaries that were winning awards and making money at a ridiculously low cost. What if instead of launching a tv channel at the most obviously stupid time they launched their own streaming network? Starting with their already existing base of paying subscribers! or if they simply decided to NOT light hundreds of millions of $$ on fire?
