End of an era ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ

After 15 years, yesterday was my last at as an ESA staff member*, & as is my longstanding habit, it ended with me cycling home late at night ๐ŸŒ–๐Ÿšดโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Well, I am an astronomer, after all ๐Ÿ”ญ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ™‚

It has been a privilege, & there is much & there are many I will miss ๐Ÿ™‡โ€โ™‚๏ธ

But Iโ€™m not retiring: next, a move to Germany ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑโžก๏ธ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช, science with , talks & tours, writing a book, & many Space Rocks events & projects in development ๐Ÿ––๐Ÿค˜

Sometimes I want to offer a word of encouragement or comfort, usually to a mutual, but sometimes not.

I compose a few words in my head and they seem cliched or presumptuous (do we know each other *that well), and in the end, I move on, feeling guilty.

Sometimes, I'll ๐Ÿ’™ or ๐Ÿ™ but except for LOLs, emojis feel weird and inadequate or wrong. Too often.

Long way of saying, I see and care about so much and so many people here, and that may not always be evident.

Long night so far.

A call from my sister just after midnight that sheโ€™d taken mum to the hospital.

Been holding bedside vigil while sister goes home and gets some sleep. Doctors running tests and whatnot. Morphine for the pain. Machines that go โ€œbingโ€.

Itโ€™s about 4:30am and mumโ€™s snoring with a plethora of tubes and wires.

Eyes are heavy. Chair is uncomfortable. The nurses showed me where I could make a cup of coffee for myself.

Hand drawn animation loop. There are 38 simple figures each doing their own dance move. 37 of them (one from each week I've done this) are on a single large cloud in the foreground. Above them is the new dancer for this week, larger and on their own cloud. A large sparkly rainbow appears and disappears at the back of the large cloud with many dancers, with a smaller version does the same for the new solitary dancer.

Half thinking of starting an hashtag here, about the dire, dire state of UK (global?) higher education. Sharing nuggets of senior management decisions, neoliberal language, and overall slow collapse.

Wonโ€™t work of course because most of us canโ€™t risk honesty, but honestly: the everyday reality of what is happening deserves recording in all its depressing and damning detail.
