There are some valid reasons to temporarily disable IPv6 in Linux for testing, debugging, and other purposes. Let's see how to disable or enable IPv6 in #Linux temporarily using the CLI https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/how-to-temporarily-disable-ipv6-in-linux/

@nixCraft
I'm a bit puzzled. If I disable/enable v6 for "all", why is it necessary to also do the same for "default"?

(referring to:
sudo sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6=0
sudo sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.default.disable_ipv6=0 )

nyx,
@nyx@im-in.space avatar

@rolle I feel you. Sometimes I miss company. It's rare, but it happens.
I had friends - not just "People I know", friends. They marry. They die. They move. They go. Added the social dynamics of groups, it got too much for me over time. So I just ... let it be.
Partially sure this was a bad decision.

And to the "Internet friends" - I think you mentioned you checked out other social networks, so you know they are ephemeral. I think, keeping some emotional distance to strangers on the net is not a bad thing.

(Easy) ways to help struggling open source projects:

  • step in and help review a few PRs

  • help the project triage/reproduce bugs

  • if code in the PR looks complicated or is hard to understand, ask for an explanation

  • express your gratitude to the maintainers

  • make your company sponsor projects they depend on

nyx,
@nyx@im-in.space avatar

@bagder One thing I do not really understand ...
"Free" is fine. But I see "Companies" mentioned pretty often. Companies have one master goal: Make money. Taking something for free and selling it for money does not contradict that goal.

So why not adjust the licences to something like "If used by a legal entity generating at least a turnover of 240 times the average monthly income of the country their headquarters are located at, at least 3% of the total turnover has to be spread equally across the products used that are covered by this license."

Problem solved.

nyx,
@nyx@im-in.space avatar

@bagder You can add something about contributing to the projects, but ...
Once upon a time, one of our devs solved an issue in an open source library we are using. He asked his superior to create a corresponding pull request. The request got denied because "It may also contribute our competitors".
So I have my doubts that a call for contribution will generate much participation.

I love that “you sound scared” has become a way to shut down critics of AI.

…yes.

yes, I absolutely am scared of it.

No, I’m not ashamed of that.

I don’t hate AI. I don't believe it’s going to destroy us terminator style.

But I’m scared half to hell of the misinformation, political divisions, unemployment, manipulation, spam and deepfake porn and what it’s going to do to our world.

Like it or dislike it, everyone should have a healthy level of fear about what this technology can do.

nyx,
@nyx@im-in.space avatar

@Daojoan Well, didn't we already have cases where decisions in the insurance and social sector were based on AI findings? I guess we will see this in the banking sector as well.

I am afraid of human stupidity. Managers not knowing what this thing marketing benelovently labelled "AI" actually is, people suffering from a huge information gap but equipped with the power to "Decide" will mess things up. Statistical models are a tool, stupidity still is a human thing.

By the way, I'm pretty positive about "LLMS" suceeding in areas of pattern recognition, like, identifying microtumors from images.

  • Do not put the lights on of any kind

  • Don’t ever call 911 or take any other logical measure

    Goal of the year is to build a personal music library to move away from music streaming services.

    Like we had 20 years ago. Good old music files on a disk somewhere. We can’t be hostages of those streaming platforms like we are now.

    The problem now is to find modern softwares, something like Roon, that will be future proof.

    I don’t even know if we use ID3 tags nowadays.

    Where should I start.

    nyx,
    @nyx@im-in.space avatar

    @regis nowadays, with moderate to low prices for mass storage devices, I would go with a lossless format. as the name suggests, it is a 1:1 copy of the original medium, but compressed - you may think of it as zip for music.
    I personally ripped all my cds to flac. take care about the ripping software, cdparanoia is pretty well. freac as a all-in-one solution provided a satisfying experience for me.

    I am very happy to report that I finally have a hopefully final‡ version of a 5 gallon water bottle opener with replaceable razor blades, and a safety cap to keep anyone from cutting themselves when grabbing it.

    It has been a lot of work, & taught me a ton about using real CAD software.

    Currently thinking there isn't enough of a market to bother trying to sell it. Or, if there is one, it'd be too hard to reach.

    ‡ I may still need to tweak the blade height slightly.

    @Fischblog In einem post - den ich nicht mehr finde - habe ich gelesen, dass in den USA oder Canada "Drive In vaccinations" eine Sache sind. Ob die Impfung dann durch das heruntergelassne Wagenfenster stattfindet war nicht klar, klar war aber, dass sie "Draußen" stattfindet.

    Ich finde das könnte man für hier ruhig auch mal in Betracht ziehen.

    Ich nehme die Grippeschutzimpfung schon Jahre lang mit, daher: In ~70% der fälle habe ich im Anschluss mehr oder weniger starke Erkältungssymptome, Ich seh' das aber immer als Zeichen dafür, dass die Impfung "Greift" und bin eher irritiert, wenn das ausbleibt. Dauert nie länger als zwei Tage..
