@osi Great initiative. The debate about funding Open Source needs to be very large, and should not be limited to VC funded startups wanting to change their business model ! Well done !

The @thoughtworks for April 2024 is worth a read - covers the movement away from licenses (the @osi gets a mention for their stewardship of licenses to date, and flags challenges), the rise of code generation and the impacts on and workflows (AI code generators change workflow patterns), and for creation - we're seeing distinct patterns emerge through .

I've always enjoyed the Tech Radar format - it simplifies the complexity of a fast-changing landscape and makes it tractable for decision makers.

If you heard my comments yesterday about the need to revise the EU rules on (reg 1025) so they don't discriminate against , you may also want to add your comments to the topic in @osi's new Discourse forum at https://discuss.opensource.org/t/time-to-fix-the-rules-about-european-standards/284 (free sign-up required to post unless you're already an OSI member).

With excellent timing given the upcoming request for #standards for #CRA compliance and the forthcoming review of regulation 1025 and standards #policy, CJEU has ruled that "harmonised standards form part of EU law" and cannot be kept secret as there is always a public interest in their disclosure. Time for some modernisation.

Well done once again @carlmalamud and team!

That said, Google's Prohibited Use Policy is an interesting read: the terms of use are not trying to capture the economic value generated by the modifications in exclusivity like the #LLama2 license does. Google's policy is all about reducing harm and risk. These raise good questions for the Definition of Open Source AI discussion

the group working on Pythia is also wrapping up their activity, we'll get it out next week.

Why has a fork of Terraform attracted so many contributions and so much interest
compared to forks of other projects? https://blog.opensource.org/a-historic-view-of-the-practice-to-delay-releasing-open-source-software-osis-report/

fuzzychef,
@fuzzychef@m6n.io avatar

@osi Answers on that:

  1. Terraform was widely adopted, including by vendors and ISVs who employ software developers

  2. Many of these organizations were already contributing to the plaform when it was OSS, so they knew the software

  3. The bait-and-switch tactics by Hashicorp's new owners erased any moral objections

  4. Among the unhappy former supporters was The Linux Foundation, who was in a position to immediately offer hosting to a new project
