Gotta say the total eclipse today was stunning. Watching it get gradually darker and then to see the black disc in the sky for a few minutes was truly memorable.

Tell me a silly/funny childhood story!

I'll start:

One time in Sunday School, the teacher was talking about the difference between humans and animals, and mentioned that Animals had Tails and humans didn't. I let her know this was not true, because my Dad had a tail, just in the front, instead of the back. The teacher was silent for several seconds, and tried to correct me in a church appropriate way, but I doubled down, and insisted that my little brothers also had front tails too. This got so heated that the teacher had to go get my parents to take me out of Sunday School.

@RickiTarr I was with my mum in a toy shop and I picked up a toy Dukes of Hazzard car (you know the one - ahem) and on the box it said “General Lee Does Wheelies!!” My mum said “Would you like me to get that for you?” and as my reading wasn’t great I replied “Nah it’s ok, it says on the box it only generally does wheelies and I’d prefer something that does wheelies all the time”. She patted me on the head and we moved on.

@onelson Big fan of the original but it is a bit of a slog let’s be honest. When I’m in the mood for it though it’s a deep ole headspace like nothing else. Absolutely loved the remake and I do think it improves on the original in lots of ways. Sorry for jumping in, love these films.

HOW did I not know about Memoriam, the Bolt Thrower singer's new thing? They have 3 albums (edit: there are 3 on Bandcamp, they have 5 full lengths total), and all of them are 🔥

This is the one from 2019

What are your thoughts on DNF (Did Not Finish)-ing books? Do you feel guilty about it? Do you worry you missed out on something? Or are you confident in dropping a book and reaching for the next one?

At what point are you most likely to DNF, if ever? What sorts of things cause you to DNF?

My friend, book blogger Kriti, was musing on these questions a while back, and it sparked this new post: https://armedwithabook.com/dealing-with-dnf-the-practice-of-did-not-finish/

@bookstodon

otherdog,
@otherdog@mastodon.social avatar

@skaeth @bookstodon I do tend to feel guilty not finishing a book and have never quite been able to shake that. I’m one of those stubborn masochists who will grind through just to finish it even if I’m not into it, it’s weird. It’s like getting to the end is the goal, I know it’s silly.

I exit early over unlikeable characters that are not funny or otherwise mitigated by the plot, animal abuse, and anything that’s affected and “edgy” (usually violence) I tend to bail.

otherdog,
@otherdog@mastodon.social avatar

@skaeth @bookstodon Really good question. I think it’s how my brain is wired, I probably equate not finishing a book with a vague sense of failure or lack of commitment. I have struggled with this and know that it doesn’t really make any sense. I also tend to obsess over page numbers and book mark progress. Not great. 😆

And yep, it does mean when I choose new books to read I try and have a high level of confidence that I’ll enjoy it so I end up being very selective.

otherdog,
@otherdog@mastodon.social avatar

@skaeth @bookstodon Thanks for hearing me out and understanding. ☕️ It’s definitely a “how close am I to finishing” thing wrapped in a sense of making decent progress. I find Kindles etc. make this worse with the metrics around time and percentage. It’s proving very hard to break this mindset.

otherdog,
@otherdog@mastodon.social avatar

@skaeth @bookstodon I agree with you on being heard, so important. Some replies to this thread give me encouragement that it can be “unlearned” as it were. I think it does tap into the things you mentioned for sure. I’m definitely gonna give it a go this year to break out of the psychology of it and just let books flow and forget all about time and numbers. 📚

otherdog,
@otherdog@mastodon.social avatar

@skaeth @bookstodon That is an amazing idea. It would get me comfortable with the concept that it’s ok to walk away and move on to the next read. I will try this out!

Reading people's layoff notes the last few days, I would like to share some reminders:

  1. Work will never love you back.

  2. "It isn't personal." Ignore people who say that. Your salary, your sense of purpose and work integrity are personal, and when they are taken away without warning, it affects you personally, even if the decision to cut your position was only about money.

  3. Thinking about your emotions through a job loss as grieving can be helpful.

  4. Work will never love you back.

otherdog,
@otherdog@mastodon.social avatar

@jilleduffy So much this. I have been having the same thoughts of late. On #2 I had a long argument a few years ago with a CTO on exactly the use of this phrase and why it’s so problematic. Thank you for validating that.

This was my gal on day 5 of TPLO (**tibial plateau leveling osteotomy) **post-op. I was an unequivocal emotional wreck & she was high as a kite.

Trying to get all her scheduled pain meds (too many to mention) into a non-cooperative, traumatized clenched mouth (with a sprained thumb) was like trying to dispense meds with a Sissy Hankshaw thumb.

She’s come a long way baby!

A Rednose pitbull sitting on a dog bed on day five of post-op surgery. The dog has a teal pillow cone around her neck and is wearing a lick sleeve on her left surgery leg.

@teksquisite It’s so nerve-wracking and emotionally draining, you just want the little fur balls to be better and they don’t really understand what’s going on. Dogs are hardy little blighters though and I’m sure with a bit more time and constant ear rubs she’ll be back to her best again.
