Neptune/Poseidon is god of the sea and horses because they're both things that can get you somewhere in a hurry but can also kill your ass dead. I don't think this is supported by any classicists but it sounds good

Google search over the years:

1998-2016: Decent quality web search.

2016-2024: Mediocre web search dominated by SEO garbage and sponsored links.

2024-___: Whatever this is.

It's just stunning to me how quickly these features are being rolled out.

Because it's part of the discourse: it's possible to have a data-driven public health policy that gives space for people who need masks and filtered air (https://social.coop/@NorthBayPython@social.northbaypython.org/112497230127564879). We're doing that at , and I'm happy to share lessons we learned this year and last.

We surely had a fun time and learned lots, so be on the lookout for our PyCon recap episode coming soon!

Until we meet again, we wish all of you Pythonistas safe travels back home! ✨

A friend of mine with small children is trying to get out of an abusive relationship.

I would like to point her at good resources about digital security in her situation.

If anyone has expertise in this field who can give me solid recommendations, I would appreciate it very much.

*Yes, I'm aware of Widows 11 / Recall.

*I do not need uninformed opinions or speculation from anyone and especially not from men. Thank you for your reading comprehension.

@ShaulaEvans in addition to the excellent resource Eva posted, I’d have a look at securityplanner.org and if she’s an Apple user, Safety Check is excellent: https://support.apple.com/en-ca/guide/personal-safety/ips2aad835e1/web

I can send regional guidance as well if you’re comfortable sharing some geo info (city/state or province). These folks are also a trustworthy clearinghouse: https://ceta.tech.cornell.edu/

If for no other reason*, I support a mask requirement at #PyConUS because the kind of person who doesn’t attend because they’re required to mask is the kind of person who I don’t want to hang out with anyway.

(* and there are lots of other good reasons too)

I’m glad this came up.

I forget the exact numbers, but I remember 2700 in-person tickets and 600 or 700 virtual tickets were sold. That puts PyCon US 2024 in the same ballpark as PyCon US 2019, which didn’t have a virtual option.

I’m not sure whether the checked-in person stat matters or not since we count tickets sold, but that’s pretty close already and feels like a nice sign. https://fosstodon.org/@mkennedy/112494016705579496

2 weeks after BSidesSF/RSA & I still don’t have my voice back. Tell me all your voice recovery tips! So far I’ve tried:

  • hydration (esp throat coat tea)
  • humidifier
  • cough drops without menthol (Luden’s)
  • 48 hours of near-total vocal rest
  • ibuprofen
  • gargling salt water

Anything I missed?

It's so fitting that Queer Majority has ads on twitter, the fascist shit hole that it is now. Here's your regular reminder that Queer Majority, bi dot org, amBi, and the American Institute of Bisexuality that is the umbrella org for those 3 things are a conservative op that attempts to subtly sell bisexual folks on conservative politics.

I told someone at that I'd send some cool links about the concept of glue work, but I unfortunately forgot to write it down as an action item and I've forgotten who! If this was you or you were there and remember, please let me know!

Hey it’s that time again.

The contention that using high-filtration masks to prevent transmission of respiratory disease is “unscientific” and “lacking evidence” when we have reams of aerosol and transmission studies is a display of either unawareness/scientific illiteracy (super fixable! non-shameful!) or of an intentional disregard of the evidence for emotional or ideological reasons (common but troubling).

The organizers of @pycon have given community organizers a massive gift 🎁

Let's not squander it!

A sold out #PyConUS 2024 proved that even large events can prioritize safety and inclusion for caregivers and immunocompromised people by way of requiring masks, and gathering venue data to calibrate their policy from year-to-year. Smaller events have proven it's possible at that scale, too.

Now is the time for at least one other large event to step up.

Who will it be? 👀

Ultimately and not very ironically, I’ve not had the chance to accept it since the hardest part has not been achieved in Jazzband. (1/3) https://fosstodon.org/@CodenameTim/112485191596931090

Don't waste your weeknight or day arguing with someone online.

If they violate the rules, report them, block them, or do both.

One last thought on the whole masking thing for now, then I'm logging off for a while.

There's a difference between an entertainment venue not requiring masks and a professional venue not requiring masks. Both suck, but by and large not attending an entertainment event won't cause lasting negative harm to your career, and correspondingly to your ability to make money and obtain healthcare.

Hey folks, one last entreaty before the hashtag trails off.

We could really use your financial support. Our non-profit is the travel sponsor for US 2024.

We've recouped only 4% of what we gave. We're here to serve & happy to do it but could really use some boosts across the fediverse to drive donors so we can do it again.

Pls donate to help more people experience through tech conference travel:

https://codeandsupply.fund/donate

And then boost!

For anyone still at looking for dinner plans, I think I'm going to head over to Bridges & Bourbon around 6 or 7. I ate there once, and would love to try something else.

I'm happy to eat alone after all this social time, and just as happy to spend another dinner sharing stories.
