This is an authoritarian (both left- and right- flavours), bigot, MAGA, TERF, tankie, anti-vaxxer, climate-change-denier etc. free zone. Conservatives and libertarians should be on their best behaviour too - I have a small amount of patience for your nonsense, and a large block button.

I’m still not sure if I’ll do an “album” because I have too much fun sharing songs as I finish them, as singles. All the same, if I do, I’ll need a good name for it. So, just for fun…

I talk to people from the UK pretty regularly, I watch a lot of BBC programming, I read a lot of books by authors from the UK, but sometimes they will suddenly use a word I've never heard in my life, and I'm beginning to think they are pranking us, and every other person from the UK is in on the joke, and just validates whatever the other person says!

What's your / of choice, and why is it so? Do you use that for all tasks and languages, or do you switch between editors depending on what you're working on?

I mostly use / for large projects, and for simpler ones. But tbh, I find myself increasingly using VS Code even for projects where I'd previously would reach for IntelliJ. And their poor story around language server integrations makes them feel less relevant today than they used to be.

pmonks,
@pmonks@sfba.social avatar

@anderseknert It does, but I don’t use it myself. I’m fine with “copy & paste” into a REPL running in a terminal window and/or (load-file "scratch.clj") for that use case.

pmonks,
@pmonks@sfba.social avatar

@anderseknert I use Sublime Text + Sublime Clojure, since most of my work is in Clojure and it’s such a straightforward language I’ve never really seen in the value in a “real” IDE. I also use Sublime for all other text editing needs (shell scripts, markdown, etc.).

On the odd occasions I have to head down the Java mines, I reach for IntelliJ, though I usually find myself fighting it more than enjoying it tbh.

@fraying Hope this isn’t an annoying reply, but have you seen https://donotreply.cards ? It’s a shame this approach puts the onus on the poster, but it seems to me to be better than nothing.

Trump must post a bond of $175M within 10 days as he appeals the >$454M judgment against him.

pmonks,
@pmonks@sfba.social avatar

@cynblogger @Nonilex Nah. If his appeal fails he’ll still owe the $454M in full plus interest. This decision buys him time, but he’s solidly switched over to the “finding out” phase at this point.

There’s a discussion on LinkedIn where a few people are saying they feel a 150K salary is enough for private schools for multiple kids and nannies and mortgages in the Bay Area and… that’s when you know those are the people with inherited wealth because, absolutely not

The math doesn’t math (after taxes? in this economy? Of 6-15K monthly mortgages? 3-5K childcare bills?)

pmonks,
@pmonks@sfba.social avatar

@skinnylatte Yeah. Just trying to think creatively about how someone could up with such a boneheaded hot take. I’m at a loss tbh.

pmonks,
@pmonks@sfba.social avatar

@skinnylatte Maybe they meant two incomes at that level? 🤔

Private
pmonks,
@pmonks@sfba.social avatar

@simon_brooke Yeah it’s an absolute last resort for me, but at least this option exists (though I don’t recall the last time I took it).

Another possibility is to checkout the project and lein install it locally, though that’s super brittle and non-reproducible elsewhere.

pmonks,
@pmonks@sfba.social avatar

@simon_brooke Or fork and push to Clojars yourself? Obvs far from ideal ofc…

In case you’re thinking of learning to swim as an adult in SF: YMCA Embarcadero and Presidio both have adult swim classes. I’d recommend the private class if you’re a n00b (like me). $50ish for 30 min for members, more for non-members, once a week? I took 6 classes and I learned freestyle and backstroke. I feel reasonably confident, enough to start swimming on my own.

Maybe I wasn’t 100% a n00b (I could do breaststroke) but I needed to build confidence after an accident in a pool years ago

It's feels a little weird to be annoyed with the etiquette on open source projects as it's free software. But, this crate has 8.3m downloads and the owner just decided to archive the repo? Defined the thing as unmaintained with no discussion? https://github.com/dtolnay/serde-yaml/releases/tag/0.9.34

One thing I have yet to see much of in this debacle is much if any empathy for the original project maintainer. From what I can gather they’ve been toiling away on this project for at least 2 decades, have faced mental health issues in that time that required them to take breaks from it, and that the alleged hacker potentially conned their way into a position of authority for the project.

I can’t imagine how awful they must feel right now, likely compounding their mental health challenges, and really hope that no one is piling on them. Working on can be a thankless job, and a small minority of users can be unreasonably entitled and vocal about it - I really hope those toxic types aren’t piling on.
