In older times, my body's uncanny ability to detect changes in barometric pressure might bring me fame and fortune.

Right now, I'll settle for a heating pad, a cat, and a comfy blanket.

podkaynelives,

@Aviva_Gary Thank you, she's also a great ankle warmer.

🔅tl;dr: story about how child-replacement cat is a total flippin neurotic weirdo—in human terms, serial killer material🔅

Presently kicking butt in college (& working constantly, ignoring my pleas to have more fun), my youngest son @Presidentwiggs also happens to be my hardcore mr. deep-clean & organize, plot & plan, decorate & beautify, streamline & improve upon, get-on-board-or-get-out-of-his-way, nonstop go-go-GO! neat-freak energizer bunny-bear god of order project manager man. Noteworthy: he’s the cheeriest, healthiest, most balanced person I know. [I wish I could pay him to organize & manage my life—without the added risk of him becoming drunk on power… son > mom power 🤨😈]

So naturally— not only does my tiny substitute furry replacement son ABHOR filth and DESPISE disorder, reacting with horror and disdain to every “disaster” as though he was raised in a palace (ahem dog rescue)— he makes every effort to avoid knocking things over, daintily stepping over & around tricky items, like pill bottles on tiny tables, abandoning routes when he sees no way to neatly cross. He will JOLT in surprise if an item is somehow disturbed. Only then does my substitute replacement son ever behave awkwardly, fumbling in response to the rare miscalculation, like a quirky actor endearingly tripping over a table in a rom-com.

Obviously, a cat so methodical and obsessed with cleanliness would never think, nor deign, to use the litter box on a… not-litter-box. Ew. “If you’re angry, glare at the human without blinking for 30 minutes; follow up with a powerful, medium-strength bite on the meaty part of the arm, if necessary, like a civilized cat. Have some self-respect!” Beto would 100% yell at other cats, if he knew how some of them behaved. (I won’t tell. I don’t want to upset him.)

Now that you understand some of Beto’s pathological issues— without even getting into his diagnosed Pica & numerous unmentioned OCD symptoms— this👇 is his dramatic, ritualistic response to the trauma of “human splashed drops of coffee on floor.” He must cover spills or odd smells, every single time, in the same way. If he sees me carrying a drink, he will drop what he’s doing to follow me, just in case, so that he can notify me right away if there’s a situation— and he is JUST as horrified by purified water.

I know for a fact that he left my room to clean the bottom of his contaminated paws. We’ve been roommates for 5 years. I know too much. Plus, it’s not like he can access cleaning products and paper towels. The heck if he’s going to return until I fix the damn floor. Thank god he can’t speak. He’d be insufferable.

Yet somehow, being covered in alligator blood is no problem. Everyone needs an outlet for their rage. If it means Beto is not plotting my death (yet), the more gators he kills, the better.

He drinks out of the toilet btw.

Beto (tuxedo cat) covering up splash of coffee on wood floor with paw, the same way cats cover stuff with litter in litter box— except it’s a symbolic performance. There’s no litter. This is the end, I missed his first 6-7 attempts to repair/express disgust at this disaster.

"Why don't you make color photos?", I was recently asked (again).

  • I sometimes do, but my preferred medium is usually B&W.

  • I don't know how to answer the question. It's like asking "why don't you make sculptures" or "why don't you write poems" or "why don't you stage installations". There are plenty of media one can work in. Can't do all of them.

podkaynelives,

@mattblaze You could reply that black and white are colors. And then run away quickly.

I'm enjoying "All Creatures Great and Small", but since it's set in a painfully twee English village, I keep wondering when the horribly butchered murder victim will be found. "Oh, he's going into the barn! It'll be there! Wait, just a choking sheep? Ah, I'll bet it's choking on a HUMAN HAND! No?"

podkaynelives,

@LizardSF The sheep could be part of an ancient cult.

Okay, so people are encouraging me to post more here, but maybe to ignore the replies... So I'll post my latest on Elon/Bill Ackman and their rather confused take on free speech that seems focused on punishing journalists for reporting on things these billionaires don't like. https://www.techdirt.com/2024/01/10/free-speech-absolutist-elon-musk-temporarily-bans-journalists-as-free-speech-absolutist-bill-ackman-threatens-slapp-suit-against-journalists/

podkaynelives,

@mmasnick Thanks for posting here too, even if it means you don't see my reply 😊, because I always look forward to reading them but don't always remember to go to techdirt and browse there.

See, the thing that I don't think a lotnof my white friends get is, that when Black people are talking politics, we're talking survival. You guys tend to treat all political discussion as little more than thought experiments.

Smh. We're trying to come up with contingency plans and survival stategies.

podkaynelives,

@Adam_Cadmon1 I literally just finished reading Parable of the Sower where the main character was doing just that! Really hit home.

Sprockles is in his teeny tuna can, ChunChun in the soft cube, and Ketzeleh doing important scientific work. None of them are available for snuggles.

podkaynelives,

@littlemiao There needs to be a fourth cat, designated for snuggles.

Just learned about introductory posts, so here it goes.

Hi, I'm Finchless, I discovered Mastodon yesterday and am now struggling to fill up my feed.

I'm from the Appalachian area of Virginia, but live in an area where hillbillies rule, and everything is field.

I enjoy D&D, Books, Gaming (Ugh I hate how "gaming" tastes in my mouth,) Art, and Birds. I play the trumpet, and have been attempting to learn guitar.

podkaynelives,

@Finchless Welcome to the Fediverse, Finchless! A great way to start building up your feed is to follow hashtags related to your interests (check out the Explore "#" tab for hashtags). Also, follow anyone and everyone who seems even remotely interesting. You can always unfollow later if needed. @FediTips gives great tips on using the platform.

My holidays were peaceful and refreshing, but also lonely. My partner had planned to spend the first week of our shared vacation to go visit parents & other family. With cases spiking, we isolated for a week prior to departure in order to protect them, but that same courtesy was not reciprocated.

My partners mom decided not to mention she was sick until after they took a 400 kilometre train trip to stay with her. She said she “doesn’t care about covid anymore” as if that makes it OK

podkaynelives,

@rohmi That had to be disappointing. That's not the "gift" you want to get for the holidays!

2023 was the year I pushed myself back into reading again. I recommend all of these:

The Hyperion series by Dan Simmons.

Kaiju Preservation Society by John @scalzi. Thank you for my autographed edition of Starter Villain - it was the highlight of my Christmas presents and will be the first new book I read in 2024!

A Memory Called Empire and A Desolation called Peace by Arkady Martine @ArkadyMartine

A Mystery of Mysteries: The Death and Life of Edgar Allen by Mark Dawidziak

The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allen Poe

All the Birds in the Sky and The City in the Middle of The Night by Charlie Jane Anders @charliejane

The Sympathizer and The Committed by Viet Thanh Nguyen

The Wager by David Grann

The first three books in The Expanse series (will start with the 4th in the New Year) by James S. A. Corey

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

Got any suggestions for 2024 reading?

podkaynelives,

@toddhorowitz Thanks for the recommendation, Todd! Just added it to the list. 2024 is going to be a great year for reading!
