Back in the day, some people set up a BBS in their home, and used it sort of like a personal website.

Posting content on topics they were interested in.

Although (different from the static personal websites) BBSes usually had the "social" aspect built into them. In that other people could contribute content to, have discussions, comment, etc.

I like that the nex-protocol supports directories.

(It is something that the HTTP protocol lacks, except for some atavi like relative path resolution. And, no, WebDAV doesn't count.)

The and were an attempt to modernize (while not making certain mistakes the Web has made).

There have been lessons learned over the years about both the "good" things and the "bad" things about and Gemtext.

If you were to redesign the Gemini-Protocol and Gemtext yourself โ€”

What would your redesign of Gemini and Gemtext look like?

There are a lot of different types in the ActivityStreams Vocabulary.

https://www.w3.org/TR/activitystreams-vocabulary/

But because Mastodon only supports 8 of them (with only 2 of them being supported properly), there is "pressure" on other Fediverse software to restrict themselves to these 8.

https://docs.joinmastodon.org/spec/activitypub/#payloads

Because they want to be compatible with Mastodon.

We (of the Fediverse) should take a lesson from Linux (and the LUGs back in the day) and do in-person Fediverse JoinFests.

Where we help people join the Fediverse.

Similar to the Linux InstallFests decades ago.

This is one of the things that attracts some people to the gemini-protocol and gemtext.

I.e., that gemini is close to being a world-wide-web based on markdown rather than HTML.

...

Having talked to many of these people โ€”

Some are fully happy with gemini and gemtext.

Some are unsatisfied with gemtext's lack of (what they feel are) key features that markdown has.

The ubiquity of the smart-phones โ€” and especially children and teenagers having access to smart-phones, and with it social-media, during early puberty seems to be what defines Gen-Z as a generation (different from Millennials).

Early puberty being โ€” 11 to 13 years old for girls, and 12 to 15 years old for boys.

This, plus over-protective parenting that don't allow their children independence, seems to have brought on a behavioral change in Gen-Z that hasn't been seen before.

One of my favorite bots accounts is:

@africanwildlife

(Created by @stefan )

I love it.

You get to see random videos of animals in Africa doing their thing in the wild. Plus some nature videos.

Want to see a gorilla relaxing, here you go:

Want to see a waterfall, watch this:

How about a mother lion playing with her cubs, there you go:

Lots more like that.

lets you attach labels to an issue.

(Which is good.)

You can create your own labels. (I usually do.)

But, as a short-cut, Gitea also lets you auto-create en masse a default set of labels. (Which could save you time.)
.
...

(Note that these "labels" would probably have been called "tags" decades ago.)

I think it would be better if there was a way to boost an entire thread, rather than boosting the individual posts in a thread.

That would mean that the thread needs to be a type of object (within ActivityPub, or some other protocol).

And additional posts to a thread need to be seen as an update or some other event (to the thread).

I recently became aware of a new small-net protocol (thanks to @wholesomedonut ) โ€”

Misfin
gemini://misfin.org/
https://sr.ht/~lem/misfin/

Where the gemini-protocol is an alternative to the gopher-protocol and the Web โ€” Misfin is an alternative to e-mail.

Misfin is tied to the gemini-protocol & gemtext โ€” messages are assumed to be gemtext, server responses are based on gemini-protocol server responses, etc.

Have you tried Soapbox before?

Soapbox is an alternative front-end for Mastodon, Pleroma, and I assume also AKkoma.

A preview of #FediverseCity

It is something that myself and @sia have been working on.

#FediverseCity is a site meant to help with onboarding onto the Fediverse

This is a rough wireframe for the home-page of #FediverseCity . I.e., this in NOT the final design. But something where you can get a feel for how the home-page might function.

Feedback welcome!

I think it would be a good idea to create a roadmap of what we intend to do.

As an open-source project โ€” it would help communicate with the world what our plans are.

(I've already been contacted over DMs about it.)

...

Although before doing that, you usually need to decide WHO you are creating the software for?

I.e,. what types of people?

As it is usually their problems you are trying to solve, and their wants that you are trying to address.
