Preordered a Community Phone.

I've wanted to try non- on mobile for ages and this looks like the best way to do it.

The cost is reasonable, but there's a subscription necessary after a year — which I'll pay if I still love the device and want to support Jolla still, or I'll abandon the device and use as a toy if not.

It apparently supports Android apps to some degree, but I won't mind if stuff doesn't work and prompts me toward digital hygiene.

@cyberlyra Excellent review. The APK support is good then? I currently use Calyx with microG and app support is a bit dodgy with a few things that expect tight integration with Play Services.

I'm pretty excited to give this a whirl. Everyone says the Sailfish interface is very good, and I'll be much happier running a more normal Linux environment.

@Moneo @SigHunter Networking came to be when there were lots of different implementations of a 'byte'. The PDP-10 was prevalent at the time the internet was being developed for example, which supported variable byte lengths of up to 36-bits per byte.

Network protocols had to support every device regardless of its byte size, so protocol specifications settled on bits as the lowest common unit size, while referring to 8-bit fields as 'octets' before 8-bit became the de facto standard byte length.

Almost a year since I started playing and I've finally hit 600 .

I've seen some IMs say that the 'hell wall' in is around 600, and my play is highly volatile depending on how tired/well/hungover I am, so I'm not expecting to get much better quickly.

I'm not sure what to aim for next. Double my rating in the next year? Hit 1,000 by end of the year? Maybe six months? Something like that.

@samwho The last ~30 or so points of this came from beating @samwho — who is usually significantly better than me — six times in a row.

Here’s an example. This account is a kook who’s been suspended from other instances, trying to back up another kook that did get suspended and had also been suspended before for bigotry. mastodon.world doesn’t give a fuck about it. But I do.

If this is someone you enjoy, get away from me.

@TonyStark I've had them blocked for ages as a spammy meme account. It's really disappointing to see such pages on the Fediverse — doubly so if they're using the popular appeal of memes to peddle nonsense.

@serge Is this about his monologue? I obviously think these protests are extremely misguided at best, but his monologue seemed sensible? Unless there's more I didn't see (I'm not American and didn't see the whole show).

My first troublesome hallucination with a in a while: (200k context) insisting that I can configure my existing keys to work with PKINIT with and helping me for a couple of hours to try to do so — before realising that GPG keys aren't supported for this use case. Whoops.

No real bother other than some wasted time, but a bit painful and disappointing.

Now to start looking at PIV instead.

Accounts pushing disinfo/misinfo about Iran vs. Israel appear to be crowding out the few credible sources remaining on Twitter/X. As @jsrailton puts it: "Twitter is awash with a flood tide of falsehoods tonight. Some is the work of people trying to farm revenue. And some is disinformation seeking to seed specific false perceptions."

This on the Cass Review, which will be published later today, was posted a minute after midnight. Today is going to be a terrible day for the internet.

I'm sick at the moment so it'll be a while before I get to read it, but I am hopeful it's more rigorous than this article makes it sound.

The Graun also posted this piece critical of the a minute after midnight too: https://www.theguardian.com/society/2024/apr/10/mother-criticises-agenda-from-above-cass-report-trans

'The woman said the Cass report represented “an agenda from up on high that things need to be more difficult”. “It’s hard enough as a parent without having the entire society or media pointing at transgender people as if they’re some aberration or as if they threaten us.”'

There’s been an especially nasty undertone in my mentions the last few days, including from someone who I’ve known for a while and whose thoughts and insights I respect. I’m saddened by this, and also baffled.

I’ve obviously offended a number of people here, presumably with my questions about Threads and Meta. I apologize. My questions were genuine, but it seems pointless for me to engage in any further discussion of the subject, given the clear passions that others have about the topic.

Wes Streeting's position, it seems (as told to the FT) wants the NHS to utilise private healthcare while it straightens itself out, so that in the long run it won't have to...

I mean its cute that he thinks that's possible; 'my ambition... to make the NHS so good that no one feels forced to go private'!

However, misunderstands how the private sector cherry picks medical treatments to ensure that the NHS never gets the easy to do stuff; so never 'gets better' just challenged

rhys,
@rhys@rhys.wtf avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 The same approach worked rather well during the Blair/Brown years.

Using private entities in the short term to clear the backlog was however accompanied by significant NHS investment to in the longer term to remove the reliance on private support. Streeting wants that outcome but hasn't committed to the spending to get there yet — which is a legit area of concern — but I've not seen anyone serious argue that using private capacity to reduce the backlog won't work.

My building has been having repeated powercuts for the last few days, and one today finally caused some damage to my array.

The four unavailable disks are in the same caddy, and the error message looks very scary, but import -fF mounts the pool fine.

I'm not really sure what to do here other than running a scrub and looking seriously into investing in a UPS. If any ZFS nerds can help me out I'd be much obliged.

A screenshot of the ZFS error page for the error being produced, which doesn't seem to perfectly match my situation as it lists disks as 'FAULTED' and says that in this scenario all data has been irrevocably lost and the pool needs to be rebuilt.
A screenshot of my terminal again after forcing a mount of the pool and it working successfully.

@FrankTheHealer @KarnaSubarna Setting displays to run at 144Hz has worked for ages. VRR is a different feature, where the display's refresh rate syncs to the framerate being pushed to it by your OS. Most environments have supported that for ages too, but some things haven't. Mutter moving to support it is a big step toward it being universally available.
