Hi everyone!

I'm looking for consulting work in data science/data analysis. I'm based in Christchurch, New Zealand, but I'm happy to work remote.

I have a background in media & communication, so I'm happy working with clients of any technical ability ^_^ I've worked on projects ranging from surveys of social workers to network analysis, so I'm happy to try anything!

If you ask me, I'd say what we most urgently need to do is less.

Less of almost everything.

Less work, less consumerism, less travel, less buying, less waste, less stress, less pollution.

'Slowing down is the Revolution.'

It wouldn't be a solution for everything but it would be a good start.

And then and or something, I don't know. There's a lot of smarter people than me thinking about that.

Perhaps that's why no one is asking me. 🤷

sageanastasi,
@sageanastasi@mastodon.nz avatar

@pezmico I think a lot about the angle of "less but it's better". Yeah, you won't have access to fast fashion -- but your clothes will be made to last, and probably even be made to your measurements (because that's part of making it last). Like, extremely few people my age have ever experienced having clothes that completely fit. There's a rich experience waiting for us in a degrowth economy.

sageanastasi,
@sageanastasi@mastodon.nz avatar

@pezmico Ditto with like, low-carbon travel options. Would taking a sailing ship for international travel take longer? Yes, but you'll have the time, because our economy won't be crunching people for as many hours as it can get out of them.

Like, I'm just some guy, I'm not the saviour of climate comms or anything, but I would like to see more of this alongside the "here's what we have to give up", you know?

Subconscious shit is weird as Hell.

My kid had huge struggles during the first three years of the pandemic, eventually declining to attend school because it wasn't safe, and then being more-or-less tortured by the state for that and being autistic (I'm really not understating that, though I don't want to get into it).

We need to have a talk, and I’m having a really hard time having it with my awesome hacker friends, because everyone is super duper emotionally invested and is deeply hurt by it.

I hope you all aren’t - because it involves all of us and it’s important. It’s not about any of y’all individually or your hard community work.

The talk is about how to make all of our cybersecurity conferences and events and meetups more accessible and conformable for young hackers because I’mreallysosorry, we’ve somehow become Old, and the stuff that we are ingrained with as “hacker culture” like movies, music, and memes all were created before they were born - and they may or may not have any emotional attachment or enjoyment of them at all.

That’s the conversation we need to have and that we are all responsible for and I swear it’s not aimed at any conference or person because we are all in this filter bubble of watching the Matrix and listening to Prodigy and remembering the hamster dance and all of that stuff while awesome was like a quarter century ago.

Part of building a community is thinking about including everyone and their culture under a mantle of good ethics and goals. So we really, really need to start having a chat about when we lean on the 90s hacker aesthetic and memories to the exclusion of people under 30. I had a wake up call hearing some students complaining about it.

sageanastasi,
@sageanastasi@mastodon.nz avatar

@hacks4pancakes I think that it might be useful to consider a move away from the idea of a singular "hacker culture" towards a diversity of hacker cultures. One part is the lack of mass-cultural touchstones (pop culture is too fragmented now), another is that I think young people are establishing their own hacker cultural pockets. It seems like it would be easier to look for commonalities between hacker cultures rather than to try and update a singular hacker culture to be more youth relevant

sageanastasi,
@sageanastasi@mastodon.nz avatar

@hacks4pancakes I used to work in admin for a counselling service for young people and when discussions of "how do we reach The Youth" came up I would try and steer it away from things like social media. I think that trying to chase youth culture is a mistake — but if you develop a culture of mentorship, authentically valuing young people's contributions, etc, you'll reach them pretty organically

Here's a very simple rule for all you clueless cis guys out there:

If you don't have an established basis with someone about sexual comments, don't make any. There's a name for this and it's sexual harassment.

This should be obvious but apparently it still isn't.

And no, knowing that the other person is for example kinky, polyamorous, sexually very active, or whatever else does not give you permission either.

I've long believed that the crucial advantage of the term "queer" over the acronyms is that is acknowledges that diversity is not something you can exhaustively enumerate. we must be always prepared to embrace diversity that we hadn't considered before. this is the most consistent inclusivity

sageanastasi,
@sageanastasi@mastodon.nz avatar

@thor @lewdum @mcc I would say that it's best to follow others' lead. For example, if a group or person uses it for themselves (e.g. a "queer support" service), it's okay for you to call them it. If they haven't used it for themselves, use another word instead -- probably whichever one they did, like "gay". And in a pinch you can always call us "the Rainbow community" haha

I really hate the "girls are becoming trans men/transmascs to escape misogyny" narrative because genuinely believing it would require that you dismantle misogyny to address the problem - but no one who spouts that narrative seems to much care about dismantling misogyny.

sageanastasi,
@sageanastasi@mastodon.nz avatar

@deilann @inherentlee Yeah I love escaping misogyny by checks notes having my wage gap, rate of unemployment, and risk of being sexually assaulted all increase compared to being a cis woman

@ator @actuallyautistic It could be worth looking into OCD, especially types like moral OCD and harm OCD. There's a decent amount of overlap between OCD and autism (we're not sure why yet).

Debating these thoughts often doesn't work because it's fulfilling the compulsion side. One view of compulsions is that they're trying to create certainty to solve the distress of being uncertain -- so debating the thoughts is a compulsion to try and "prove" you're a good person.

This graph is making the rounds again on other social media sites. It begs the question "Why do men pay off their student loans, but women can't/won't?"

It's not Black history month, but you already know the answer!

Black women are forced to borrow more for their education. Then Black women are paid less when they graduate, even for the same degree.

A disproportionate amount of the $1.7 Trillion of loan debt (not a typo. Trillion. With a "T.") is held by Black women that did everything right)

sageanastasi,
@sageanastasi@mastodon.nz avatar

@mekkaokereke @mekkaokereke And these stats are based on cis people, too -- in Aotearoa trans people of all genders have an annual income half that of the average annual income. (p. 86) https://countingourselves.nz/2018-survey-report/

First ever study on how T changes trans men's voices! They found it does a good job of changing the main pitch but doesn't get all of the secondary resonances that contribute to gender. This suggests that adding voice therapy to treatment could be beneficial

They also found that prior to starting T, voice was the physical aspect trans men are most unhappy about, whereas after being on T for a while there was a high level of satisfaction with the changes.

I mentioned to my PhD chat group buddies that it’d be lovely to see them on Mastodon, and some have agreed to give it a go.

So I’m asking for help. In advance of them arriving, I’d love to be able to point them at this post and replies to find their connections. Are you doing a too? What’s it about? Have you just finished one and have some advice?

[edit: mine's about getting kids interested in data science at school]

Since I was linking it elsewhere: I'm haunted by this 2014 article from Deadspin which correctly predicted that the political & harassment strategies from Gamergate would form the core of the current "culture wars". Recommend it for helping people who "just don't get the culture wars thing" understand how we got here.
