I am bummed that I am going to miss (in person) this year, and even with it right here at home.

I can provide local info and recommendations if anyone needs or wants.

Minor smartwatch plus: ability to change up its face at will. Found one that includes a seconds hand /and/ which even has the quarter minute points numerically indicated.

What's odd is I didn't see any options for a seconds-capable digital display, outside of the usual stopwatch functionality. You'd think there'd be ONE of those.

snacktraces,
@snacktraces@hachyderm.io avatar

@mpirnat
Early on in my hardware career I remember talking with a chip/display designer and they told me that seconds were costly to add to a display. Size and money wise. They said that just became such a norm that no one challenged or even cared to implement.

I wonder sometimes if that things like this are just such an embedded "stance".

Also, something interesting this made me remember... one of our engineers thought to flip the third-from-left 7 segment display to have its decimal point be part of the 'colon' between hours and minutes. We saved $ on using a more costly display setup. (Back in the discrete chip days.)

Tell me a silly/funny childhood story!

I'll start:

One time in Sunday School, the teacher was talking about the difference between humans and animals, and mentioned that Animals had Tails and humans didn't. I let her know this was not true, because my Dad had a tail, just in the front, instead of the back. The teacher was silent for several seconds, and tried to correct me in a church appropriate way, but I doubled down, and insisted that my little brothers also had front tails too. This got so heated that the teacher had to go get my parents to take me out of Sunday School.

snacktraces,
@snacktraces@hachyderm.io avatar

@RickiTarr
You got kicked out of sunday school too?

snacktraces,
@snacktraces@hachyderm.io avatar

@RickiTarr
At Halloween one year, my dad was handing out candy and I was taking a break sitting on the srairs...

Dave from up the street: trick or treat Mr LastName
Dad: I see you are wearing your baseball uniform
Dave: yes, this is my costume
Dad: I have seen you play Dave, good costume.

This is the level of snark that aspire to carry on.

It took me 343 days to read The Count of Monte Cristo, but I did it. And it’s a freaking amazing accomplishment.

I had similar excitement when I finally finished Les Miserables (unabridged).

forgive me please, I do implore
I ate those plums and nothing more

Reading tip: index cards

I take a few index cards and place them in each non-fiction (and even in some fiction*) books.

As I read I take notes on the cards.

  • I draw a small checkbox next to items I want to follow up on
  • I copy items that might want to quote some day, exactly, word for word
  • If something I read has me asking a question, I write that so that I don't lose that if I read onward
  • and other such notations

The card(s) can even serve as a bookmark.

Folks who have learned English as an additional language, I have a question.

Have contractions been a source of difficulty understanding, speaking, or writing in English?

(e.g. can't [cannot], won't [will not], would've [would have], etc)

Math can be scary for kids. Math can be risky for kids too. Other kids might say math is for "nerds".

If we perpetuate that math is scary, if we let our kids bully other kids out of liking math, we do serious damage.

For every kid, especially girls, that dislikes or fears math, we limit their career choices. STEM careers are highly dependent upon the M. If we take away the M, STE are less of an option.

Don't make jokes about math being hard, help kids with math when they need it.

Just got a card from a student who has been having a rough year. She was having a great deal of trouble until I started showing her how to really USE a calculator. (It's algebra and geometry not arithmetic, and she knows the algorithms just makes SO MANY little mistakes)

Since then she's really taken off. I find very few people who could benefit from calculators know how to use them effectively, and there is a lot of snootiness and stigma in the way of this happening.

1/

snacktraces,
@snacktraces@hachyderm.io avatar

@futurebird
And bonus points (no one keeping score, but you deserve them anyway): teaching her to look at the answers and see if they make sense. This is priceless. Too many times I have let the calculator or program answer for me. Knowing how to "sense" if that answer is right, that is extra special.
