Indoor air quality at my kids' schools is all I care about. Used to be usual things like data engineering in Rust, exploring public lands in our old Land Cruiser (in moderation, walk or bike in the city!), maybe mtn biking or skiing. MS computer science. Oregon (having lived everywhere else). #ventilation, #flo_mask, #co2monitors, #iaq, #covidisairborne

Level 10 measures in effect thanks to some parent sending kid in to infect my kid. Here's a tour our setup.

Energy efficiency out the window. CR-like fan for positive pressure (facing inward). MERV13+ filters on high in most rooms. Three 150 CFM ceiling/kitchen exhaust fans on high. Two Aranet4 always below 500. All in Flo masks. With Patient Zero at four neg tests over three full days (one Lucira PCR-"like") we're about ready to back off to heightened but "cold" level.

I cosign all of this. To the best of my knowledge, I don't have a medical condition that makes me more "high risk" for Covid than anyone else.

And yet I understand that Covid destroys everyone's bodies and I don't want that to happen to me.

So I always wear respirators, etc.

I would love to live in a world where people resisted capitalist propaganda to protect the people around them and not be ableist... But we don't live in that world...

surfingreg,

@crowgirl I have to think slowly through what it means to be "ableist" by my staying outside restaurants. And I always come to the conclusion whomever's saying it is being duplicitous about what their real motivation is. If we were talking about a homeless shelter, maybe. Or about the livelihood of the restaurant owner, still a stretch. But eating out indoors falling on the needs triangle is not reasonable. What is it the speaker really needs? Profits, tax dollars, indulgence?

@sabik @surfingreg @crowgirl That's the word I was looking for. Across the board.

Lead from gasoline blunted the IQ of about half the U.S. population, study says

'Leaded gas was banned in 1996, but exposure to the poison cost people born before then several IQ points on average, researchers estimated'

And not just in the US, I'll bet.

It is so weird how many parents have adopted this mindset that it is normal that your kids keep constantly bringing in sicknesses from kindergarden and school.

No, it is not normal that parents let their sick kids to come to these spaces to infect your kids. It is not normal that measels, rubella, covid, flu, infuluenza, and foot-mouth-and-hand disease are now common.

When I was a kid, I barely ever got sick - because parents would keep sick kids AT HOME.

You can do this too.

#covid #parents

surfingreg,

@hiisikoloart Speaking only for what I've seen as a weekly classroom volunteer, at any given time this winter a third of first grade has exhibited symptoms, of something. A school is essentially a sick ward. How many times have my preschool and 1st grader been sick this winter? Zero. The only thing we do different is kids wear masks, any time on the school grounds, and parents in Flo masks anytime inside. It's really quite nice not being sick. Reminds me of my youth too.

South Australia: COVID rips through school staff rooms as hundreds call in sick. By Brad Crouch

@BBoyerMP @edu_sagov @PictonChris @SAHealth @PMalinauskasMP @auscovid19

Source: https://www.adelaidenow.com.au/south-australia-education/covid-hitting-sa-classrooms-as-new-data-shows-vaccine-divide/news-story/568d3c1813410051c26c1b68e00a97fb

SA Health reports there were 1418 cases recorded in the past week, down from 1479 cases the previous week, and no Covid-linked deaths – however with the threat receding many people may no longer be testing for mild symptoms or reporting positive home RAT tests. There have been 965,772 cases reported and 1715 deaths since South Australia’s first case was recorded on February 1, 2020. Meanwhile, information released to The Advertiser shows while more than 230 SA Health staff have been sacked since October 2021 for refusing the Covid-19 vaccination, only one has been terminated for refusing the similarly mandated dTpa vaccine booster (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis). SA Health says local health networks are responsible for ensuring staff comply with relevant policies, including vaccination requirements. “The (vaccination) policy covers the dTpa vaccine and other vaccines to ensure we meet our obligations from an occupational health and safety perspective,” a statement says. “Since 2020, only one employee out of more than 45,000 SA Health staff has had their role terminated for refusing the dTpa vaccine.” SA Health is aware of employees who are not compliant with booster requirements for dTpa, and staff are being sent reminders to get these boosters. “Appropriate disciplinary action may be taken if staff remain non-complaint, which could include suspension or termination of employment,” SA Health says.

How do N95 masks catch particles that are smaller than the holes?

  1. Particles are sticky because of static forces
  2. Large particle go straight until they hit a mask layer
Tiny particles get knocked around by molecules until they hit a fibre
  3. Fibres are given an electric charge so that they attract all particles

http://‪youtu.be/eAdanPfQdCA‬

surfingreg,

@dan613 Thanks!!! How do smells factor in? As in, all my favorite N95/Flo masks can't keep out the hardware store bathroom's various...affronts. Odor particles too small?

@crowgirl As an inactive WHN volunteer myself, I was far more effective acting at my kids' district level (we got purifiers installed) than anything out of the school working group. surfingreg,

@enobacon Wouldn't that be in essence the same as: "A person who turns into a special left turn lane from an alley, driveway or other entrance to the highway that has the special left turn lane is in violation of this section if the person does anything other than stop in the lane and merge into traffic in the lane immediately to the right of the person’s vehicle."

@Brad So I'm curious, at what point does federal and state funding drop off if kids are absent? The first excuse listed is, "Families are more likely to keep sick kids home." How is that a bad thing? Ultimately not spreading [anything] will result in more kids in school. Is this no different than return-to-office propaganda that impacts someone's bottom line?
