Another problem with writing is that I would love to write stuff set in a modern world, but I don't want to write about Germany (boring, shitty country, too close to home, German names are ugly) but don't have enough knowledge to write about America or the UK.

Writing anything set there would put off my readers within ten pages by being grossly inaccurate.

Damned if I do, damned if I don't...

taur10,

@amberage Could always write AU versions of the modern world, they can be great fun, just watch early episodes of Sliders for some great examples, the world where no one knows what the US Constitution says was always a favorite of mine.

305 — Are there any characters of yours that you wound up HATING once you were finished with a story or WIP?

Taking a cue from @floofpaldi on how to answer this one, I have characters that are HATEFUL but none that I hate. I'm not to a Conan Doyle level that I can hate a character so much that I want to kill off my Sherlock Holmes.

Occasional hateful characters are great fun to write and pit against my MC. She ticks off one misogynist prizefighter during a press interview where her trainer presents her as a contender. An off-handed remark. He becomes her boogeyman, but he's stupidly angry, obviously uses steroids, blurts racist epithets, and gets used by others as muscle. The time he attacks her on a crowded public street, she manages to get him to trip into traffic where he breaks his legs. She walks off with her "Starbucks" she'd put down on a newspaper rack to deal with him.

Another time he ambushes her in a quiet neighborhood midday when nobody is around. His first punch to the head renders her unable to use magic part of her martial art and leaves her stumbling. He fights only with brawn. He wants to kill her. How could you hate a character on character setup like that?

She defeats him with a child's wooden pull toy. Anymore would be spoilers.

Don't wash the Cybertruck in direct sunlight.

So essentially:
• Keep away from bright lights
• Keep away from water

I'm just waiting on the rule that you can't feed the Cybertruck after midnight.

Disney recently acquired the "Alien" franchise. That means, since the aliens have a queen, all the xenomorphs are Disney princesses.

taur10,

@Chip_Unicorn @RickiTarr @jennzycos Don't forget that Fox also owns MASH, which means Klinger is a Disney Princess

Anyone out there using Friendica with mobile on ? Tried it again for a while this weekend but eventually gave up (again) because, in the web UI on my device, Friendica / frio became almost unusable while trying to "@" - mention some user. Either loading or displaying suggestions / completions seems incredibly slow here. Is this just me? Any other experiences?

taur10,

@z428 Works well enough for me, but it certainly has some glitches at times, and it's unusable in DEX mode.

Got down to stuff, now that I'm retired and can devote time to the of . First order of business: catalog the unsold novels from after the burn out that need revision and rewrites.

Turns out that disconnecting my Mac from my work VPN messed up my folders. I had somehow mapped (don't know the Mac term) my work Windows computer folders to the Mac, and when I look in documents it tries to find it on the network and fails. If I reboot, so long as I go directly from my user's directory to documents directory, I'm good. If I click on Documents in Finder, it redirects and I'm screwed.

First thing I did was copy all my writing folders to the desktop. At least I've lost none of my old novels and short work.

I thought there were 7 completed books, and I said so online. There are actually 9, three that form a trilogy and one novel with a sequel in the mix. There are two incomplete novels.

Some works are older than others. Pages refuses to open one novel from 1996, a fun space opera that possibly has the highest chance of early sales. I haven't tried the others. Now I gotta install Word, of which I am not a fan, and investigate programs that'll open the really old files. If anyone wants to chime in with suggestions, please do! (I can always find someone with a Windows machine if need be.) Putting Google on TODO. I actually have original copies of chapters from my Apple ] days, but thankfully I updated those to the Mac and to a new millennium version of Word in what were my PowerPC days.

Incidentally, there really are three novellas in good shape. What surprises me though? There looks like about 15 short stories, many complete because I see multiple submissions in the various folders. I completely forgot about these, and was sure I never wrote short-form.

Baby steps, I guess.

taur10,

@sfwrtr @stevendbrewer Hey, why pay when you don't need to? Besides, it's almost as old as Word is... Sorta.

taur10,

@stevendbrewer @sfwrtr Thanks for reminding me of one of the names from the past, as I recall the whole thing started as the free open source off shoot of a paid product, and has forked a few times, with LibreOffice being one of, and in my opinion, the best of the active forks.

taur10,

@stevendbrewer @sfwrtr Back when I had a Mac I remember running OpenOffice I think it was, though it might've been a different one, since I saw no reason to pay for an office suite when it wasn't something I needed too often. That and being locked in, just look at the stupidity that is DOCX

taur10,

@sfwrtr @alan @stevendbrewer Gotta love open source, usually people who need something that either isn't available, or costs too much, so they fix it themselves.

taur10,

@trelane @alan @jredlund @stevendbrewer @sfwrtr IIRC, Pages files like DOCX are just a container, though Apple was a bit trickier with theirs, so it might take a bit before it's reverse engineered.

Status: Completed /The Downsides of Godness,/ a short clocking in oversized at 900 words, too big for a tootfic. Too pared down and concise to be sufficiently comprehensible, alas. Needs another 200 or 300 words added to fill in the holes, or a segment slashed out. Not sure which. Not giving up and throwing it into a drawer just yet. I wrote it from the god's point of view in first person. I'll try writing it from the mortal woman's point of view if all else fails as the idea is a good one, I think.

@sfwrtr Considering their history, just look at them when Apple made rules regarding permissions, there's no way I'm giving them anything they can use, did I forget to mention that I have a Facebook container to keep it separate from everything else in the browser, and I only access it from a separate computer used for laser engraving, as well as a phone and tablet that are separate from everything else I did.

taur10,

@sfwrtr What type of containers are you talking about? I'm talking about Firefox which is a pretty neat feature, essentially it's a second instance within the first completely walling it off. On my main computer I have containers for Reddit, Amazon, Google, Tumblr, and Discord, plus I've added a few more tricks such as reading Twitter when necessary over a randomized Nitter connection.

Ch 4 Nbr 4— Do you/will you write under your own name?

No. I did, though. My name adds a subtext to my writing I wish to avoid. That doesn't mean you can't find my real name, but you're going to have to choose.

Do you share a name with another writer?

No.

I repeat this anecdote a lot so forgive me if you've heard it, but ...

... my Ukrainian-Canadian grandfather ran his dairy farm using a 1960s-era truck ...

which was by today's standards tiny: Lower-slung, small cab

But!

It was more usable than today's monstrosities

It had a longer bed than today's trucks; being lower-slung made loading/unloading easier

Again: He ran a whole-ass farm with this vehicle; drove over rough terrain

Few people need today's bloated, paramilitary trucks

taur10,

@cmgrowell @ai6yr @DoomsdaysCW @bruceturner @clive It's unlikely to ever happen, they're years behind on producing anything, and have promised so many vehicles to commercial clients that anyone who's put a deposit down will have to wait years before getting there's even if production ever actually happens.
That said, what they're promising is good enough that I've invested a small amount in it, it'll sting to lose it, but if'n they actually start production, I'll get a nice reward.

Well, here's the problem: (From the Atlantic Daily Newsletter)

"Corporations exist to make a profit..."

Well... No.

They exist so groups of people can work together to accomplish "something" they could not alone, typically with said people making a living doing so, while enjoying a legal status that allows the team to act like a single individual.

Profit can be a side-affect. The "team making a living" part comes first before the "sharing a profit" part.

Is this the misunderstanding causing all the problems?

taur10,

@amberage @sfwrtr I remember that court decision
