HEY Infosec Mastodon! Wanna help me out?
I'm looking for screenshotable quotes about pentesting. Wanna respond to any of these questions? If you do you may be included in my next talk!

  • What's the biggest pitfall a pentester can make?
  • What makes a good pentest?
  • What makes a bad test?
  • Vuln scan versus pentest - which one is "better"?

Or just whatever you want. I will include any memes I get, so reply away.
Boosts help :)

techviator,
@techviator@noc.social avatar

@urda @dnsprincess I disagree, it's not sometimes, it's ALWAYS!!!! Social engineering should be the first part of any pentest!

techviator,
@techviator@noc.social avatar

@dnsprincess I am not a pentester, but I do work SecOps. In my limited experience I think bad documentation of scope, methodology, procedures or results is one of the biggest pitfalls.

Vulnerability scan is different than pentest (although usually a part of it), so one is not better than the other. Vulnerability scans should be part of the scheduled routines, right after patching. Pentests should be done regularly but not as often (cost and resources being the main reason).

The bundles are coming:

  • Disney+, Hulu, Max mash up their original content with content from ABC, Fox, TNT, TBS, CNN, Discovery Channel, Food Network, & more

  • ESPN, Fox Sports, Discovery are combining forces for a sports channel bundle

So we went from cable bundles, to cord cutting, to paying for internet and more bundles.

This does not feel like a win for consumers. More like a shuffling of the deck.

@davemark And all of the cord cutters from the 2010s, when Netflix was good, went back to the high seas, only instead of Ares they now use the Arr suite....

@TerryHancock@realsocial.life avatar

I have multiple VMs on a host machine (, but I don't think that matters for this question).

I want to have several VMs on a virtual -- i.e. software only -- network inside the Proxmox server. Like there's a little pretend switch, connected to pretend NICs on each VM.

WHAT IS THAT CALLED?

I would've thought "VLAN" meant this, but when I look it up, it seems to be a more expansive term, and people talk about "managed switches", etc.

[1/3]

techviator,
@techviator@noc.social avatar

@TerryHancock That's a VNet (Virtual Network). In Proxmox you create a new VMBR (Virtual Bridge), but don't link it to a physical NIC, that would give you a private switch.

You can have a VM act as a router (or a jumphost) by attaching a VNIC (Virtual network Interface Card) to the private bridge, and another VNIC to the LAN connected bridge.

Any VPS provider not supporting IPv6 nowadays is really lagging behind.

@Dogzilla @davemark Yeah, that's still the case regarding keyboard with Immersed. Both vSpatial and Virtual Desktop have the ability for full remote, but there are still some limitations with some key combinations that the Quest takes as input instead of sending them through (at least last time I tried a year back). But for my use case is not a show stopper as I have my laptop nearby anyway and just replaced the external monitors.

techviator,
@techviator@noc.social avatar

@Dogzilla @davemark I work in IT/Cloud so all I do is behind a monitor and remotely, I use a VR headset as a monitor replacement via Immersed (VR App), it moves me from my small home office to a great virtual space, either alone or in a collaboration or public room. The reason the Quest 3 will be an upgrade is better optics due to flat lenses, and color and better defined passthrough to better see my keyboard or anything else I need to look at IRL real quick.

@merecivilian You're growing up.... LOL J/K I have never been an Apple user myself, but I do follow all tech and it seems Apple has been getting left behind or joining late to certain markets on the software side, they need to pay as much attention to their software as they have to their chip development.

Microsoft and Qualcomm have been making huge leaps in terms of getting an Arm based processor and software combination that finally gets Windows on Arm to work properly.

I can't get over the following direct quote, which is from the middle of a training session provided by my company's new (probably lower-budget) HR/training vendor:

Imma be real with you guys... it's been many years, but I still don't think the " ribbon" (image attached) for settings and stuff is good. Sure, it looks pretty.. but that's about it. It's a downgrade when it comes to usability.. a massive one imo. I may be the only one, but I click through those tabs 20 times before I find the right setting for something I use less often and it annoys me. Even after all these years.

It's amazing how completely fucked normal people are when it comes to and understanding what is coming to their computers. This is an actual conversation I had today.

T: "I heard Microsoft has a new thing coming that takes screenshots of your screen called Copilot. Do I have that?"
M: "That's called Recall and I think it's only coming to Copilot+ computers."
T: "Well I already have Copilot. I think I have normal Copilot and Copilot for Office 365."
M: "Um I don't think its related to that. For some reason they're calling new laptops Copilot+"
T: "My son has Copilot from his programming class. Is that the same as my Copilot?"
M: "No that's GitHub Copilot which is a different thing."

You couldn't have done a worse job with naming if you tried. Hats off to Microsoft marketing for being so confusing it took a team of people walking through your marketing docs to figure out what unwanted feature is coming to who.

Fucking #Microsoft

I turned on my PC, opened the web browser and typed something I was after into the search engine. The results came up in Bing.

I don't use Bing. I use StartPage.

Then I noticed the browser setting had an Error message. I clicked on it and got this.

This is NOT StartPage asking to accept 'Permissions,' it's Windows.

The permission listed is ambiguous/unclear. I'm assuming "Remove" means remove #StartPage

#Gates-Of-Hell

techviator,
@techviator@noc.social avatar

@Penguinflight If you trust the extension you should have no issues accepting the new permissions, it's just letting you know that this extension will now be able to block certain content on all websites, if that's acceptable to you go ahead.

techviator,
@techviator@noc.social avatar

@Penguinflight That seems to be an extension requesting permissions, if you were using an extension for StartPage instead of changing the default search engine in the browser settings, that extension is now requesting additional permissions that the browser is warning you about.

I am fairly new to the , but have been in IT and for over a decade, I am thinking or migrating from my current instances and creating my own and instances for my personal use only.

Any suggestions or ideas?
Any reasons you would not recommend it?
Security concerns?

Also, 1 shared VM for all of the instances, or 1 for each?

I am considering if full VM or LXC, the LXC would be faster and consume less resources but I'm concerned with the security of the host.

Question for the #Linux crowd. Does anyone know of a distribution which would work on a Microshaft Surface Pro 7? Now that MS has infected my tablet with uninstallable Copilot, I would like to return their favor and uninstall Windows. Any help is appreciated!

I am definitely staying with a Will upgrade to the though. For productivity is still the best out there, and for watching my movie collection .

The Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and YouTube apps also work, but they definitely need an update.

Not moving towards the at all. The device looks cool, the 2D with AR portion looks great, but 3D content seems lacking, and the price is way up there as expected.

But is RayNeo making TOO many compromises to hit the lower price?

techviator,

@SomeGadgetGuy Hey, great video, as always! Since you are the first I've seen with this glasses and also the other brands, I have a few questions, how does the display compares to XReal Air in terms of size, crispness and brightness? I also noticed that you did not mention a blackout cover like the other 3 brands have, do they not have it? I tried Viture but the image was smaller and blurry compared with XReal.
