Haider is such an all-time great movie, one of the best of Indian cinema. It's an adaptation of Hamlet set in Kashmir, and the struggles of identity it grasps with are just as much about Haider/Hamlet as the Kashmiri people.

Plus, the adaptation of the gravedigger scene is spectacular. (And also the adaptation of the play within the play, which I won't spoil.)

The US opposition to the International Criminal Court () and to international law is obviously self-serving. Israel here is merely providing the Americans with an excuse.

For those who donโ€™t know, the US passed a bill in 2002 allowing the state to use any means necessary to protect Americans accused by the ICC. Itโ€™s informally known as The Hague Invasion Act, in case you thought theyโ€™d be subtle about it.

Anyone who cares about should be very worried about the USA going after the International Criminal Court to defend . This will easily be used by the Russian state to avoid accountability over its invasion of Ukraine. Biden is making Ukraine more vulnerable while ignoring large parts of his own base. If this leads to a Trump victory it would be a victory for Putin and a further step in the destruction of even the most basic mechanisms of international accountability.

this does not justify straight up racism. By calling Russians "Asiatic hordes", you're enacting racism against North Asian folks, many of which have been forcibly conscripted into this bullshit because Russia likes treating minorities as expendable.

Don't throw North Asians under the bus. They haven't wronged you in any way

Nauru has broken its ties with Taiwan to establish relations the PRC.

This actually shows the limits of the PRC's power. The only action they can take against Taiwan after its elections is a diplomatic coup in a tiny island nation.

Taiwan continues to enjoy excellent relations with the US, Japan and EU. Taiwan remains sovereign and independent.

on tagesschau.de, an interview with meron mendel was published yesterday > see www.tagesschau.de/ausland/asien/israel-hamas-terror-angriff-100.html

meron mendel is the director of anne frank educational centre, located in anne frank's place of birth frankfurt > mendel presents his vision of peace in the middle east, strongly advocating for an independent palestine

irritatingly, german journos inserted a huge mistake:

"Wir hรถren von der rechtsextremistischen Seite des israelischen Kabinetts die Forderung nach einer Vertreibung der Palรคstinenser aus Gaza, dass von 1,3 Millionen Palรคstinensern nur noch 100.000 bis 200.000 bleiben sollen. Vor dieser Vision kann es einem nur grauen."

english translation:> "We are hearing calls from the far-right side of the Israeli cabinet for the Palestinians to be expelled from Gaza, that only 100,000 to 200,000 of the 1.3 million Palestinians should remain. One can only shudder at this vision."

the number "1.3 million" is incorrect: gaza has 2.3 million inhabitants > i.e. it's a typo, but surely not a minor one > yet, journos at germany's most important news website would not bother to correct the typo, thereby allowing misinformation to spread

Important announcement, everyone! ๐ŸŽ‰

After giving this a lot of thought and discussing with the wonderful people that build Iceshrimp, #Catodon will rebase to #Iceshrimp. We feel that it's the right decision for the road ahead, as Iceshrimp is another #firefish fork that focuses in improving performance and they have already done some amazing improvements, like full Mastodon API support. With Firefish's future uncertain, we think it's better to stay closer to an actively maintained project. The two projects will stay distinct, as we have different design goals, but we have a common codebase so we feel this makes sense.

Just to be clear on all fronts and to answer the obvious question in advance, yes, Iceshrimp is also currently doing a full rewrite in C#, which is a few months away, and we haven't decided if we'll adopt this yet - it's a strong possibility, but we're keeping our options open. We're confident they're doing a great job, still, we'll weigh what the best decision for Catodon is on this when it's ready and the time comes.

Just wanted to let you know that this might push Catodon's development back a little, as it's sort of a structural change, but we feel that it's worth it, and that it might be better for the broader community. Catodon development will resume once rebasing to Iceshrimp is finished, and then we'll have better foundations to build this on.

Impressive demonstration on why using country-specific TLDs for wordplays is not only often bordering on coloniser bs (generally speaking, I don't know queer.af's situation), but also plain impractical and just a bad idea in general.

amberage,
@amberage@eldritch.cafe avatar

And since we're on it: mas.to uses the TLD of the Kingdom of Tonga. hachyderm.io uses that of the 'British' Indian Ocean Territories. masto.ai uses that of Anguilla.

There's two big questions: is the money I am paying to use a country name for my puns going to that country or ending up in someone's pocket in the US, and what happens to my instance if that country experiences civil war?

amberage,
@amberage@eldritch.cafe avatar

Like, get this, .io literally refers to an area where the inhabitants were deported by the UK to make room for a military base. The people who were deported are still alive and want to return to their home land.

That's the implication .io carries, and that's what you implicitly pay your domain money for.

Now make a cool input-output pun again.

queer.af shutdown

TL;DR: Queer.AF will be close on 2024-04-12

In July 2018, me and three friends were chatting in my flat in London. One of them mentioned that they had a fun domain they had no idea what to do with. That domain, of course, is queer.af, and the rest, as they say, is history. We invited our friends and let them invite their friends, and that's how things have operated here ever since.

Since the fall of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in 2021, that fate of that domain has fallen into question; until late last year, the .af registry had effectively ceased to exist, leaving everything in a state of limbo. The Council of Country Code Administrators (CoCCA), who were contracted to operate the TLD, continued to operate things as-is, although eventually turned off all operations but automatic renewals.

More recently, however, the registry has begun to operate again. Unfortunately, this is not really good news: this means it is now under the control of the Taliban government of Afghanistan. From a practical perspective, this means that the present government has a desire to exert control over the country's top level domain, and from an ethical and legal perspective this means that domain-related fees are now directed to the Taliban. As an additional complication, the registry operators have wiped the existing list of accredited registrars and replaced them with 21 new organizations.

In light of this, the queer.af domain name (which expires on the 13th of April) will not be renewed. Because fediverse software does not support domain migrations, the queer.af instance must therefore close as a consequence.

Timelne

  • Now: User registration has been completely disabled.
  • 2024-04-12: The instance will be instructed to self destruct (sending delete activities for all accounts to all known instances)

An archive of the database and user media will be retained for at least a further 3 months in order to support user exports. It will be deleted by 2025-04-12 at the latest.

Questions and Answers

  • What actions should I take? Please take the following three months to setup an account on another instance and migrate, and to export all of your posts and following lists.
  • Will there be a successor instance? Maybe. I haven't reached a decision as to whether to run a new multi-user instance or retire to a single user instance yet. It is likely that if I start a successor instance, it will be running software other than Mastodon; the software landscape has changed since 2018. If I do start one, every queer.af user will receive an invite.
  • Any other plans? One project I've been contemplating for 2024 is offering managed instance hosting to friends, open source projects, and similar. If you're a user of queer.af or a friend who would be interested in that (and in particular in beta-testing it), drop me a message.

Finally, thank you to every user of queer.af, past and present, for being here. You've been a wonderful userbase, and it has been (almost all of the time) a pleasure to be your host

I'm glad to announce the release of version 2.44 of , the simple, minimalistic instance server written in C. It includes the following changes:

Fixed a nasty bug that caused the in-memory output queue to be corrupted under heavy traffic loads. This is a good reason to upgrade (thanks to Vรญctor Moral and Stefano Marinelli for helping me in fixing this).

Shared inboxes are now supported. This is not a user visible feature (hopefully, they will not feel any change), but it will significantly improve traffic for snac instances with many users and will open room for new features that are only feasible with these kind of input channels (this is not enabled by default; see snac(8)).

I've refactored all HTML code because it was somewhat of a mess; now it's much more maintainable (at least for me). I think I haven't broken anything.

Fixed crash in a special case of malformed query.

Mastodon API: some tweaks for better integration with more clients, and fixed a crash when processing boosts from kbin.

Fixed crash in the FastCGI code (thanks to Yonle for helping me debug this).

Added apache2 configuration information (contributed by Vรญctor Moral).

Added FreeBSD and NetBSD setup information and examples (contributed by draga79).
