I'm not sure whether I enjoy the facts more or the little comments which accompany them.

🤔If Trump jumps bail, who would the bail bonds person send to go get him?

Please don't say Dog the Bounty Hunter. It would probably be him though. But if not him, then who?

Who is the Bass Reeves of today?

I mean, technically, wouldn't Trump still have a Secret Service detail? How would that work? Would there be a standoff between the US Marshals and the US Secret Service?

So many questions!

tobyink,

@mekkaokereke
The secret service work for the government and wouldn't really let him jump bail.

Hello Fedi. We're having homemade pizzas for our tea tonight. Please help settle an area of household disagreement:

When putting sliced mushrooms on a pizza, should they be pre-cooked, or just popped on raw?

tobyink,

@losttourist
I wouldn't pre-cook them, but it's virtually impossible to overcook mushrooms, so there's no harm doing so.

In this kind of post it's usually helpful to mention where you're actually located.

Unless the bartender job is work from home? I could be interested in that.

Inside a script I wanted to compare an input string against an array of strings. When the input exactly matches against one of the array items, then print that a match was found.

One way to solve this is to use the Perl-internal grep function (similar in behaviour to the grep Shell command, but not exactly the same).

https://www.claudiokuenzler.com/blog/1335/how-to-grep-exact-string-match-perl

tobyink,

@ology @mjgardner @ck
Consider match::simple, which will be faster still if you've got the XS backend installed.

List::Utils has been bundled with Perl for decades. (Since before Perl 5.8.) You should already have it.

Announcing new oil and gas drilling is an interesting way to encourage your already-disaffected, small-c Tory base that they should finally vote Green or Lib Dem.

Are "small-c Tories" the conservatives who are only a little bit of a c-word?

Perhaps via the Dutch translation which is pretty close to an English slur for lesbians? That could make sense if the AI is grouping words that it considers synonyms.

Article on a new matches operator for Perl 5.38:

https://toby.ink/blog/2023/07/14/matching-simply/

@Perl

tobyink,

@mjgardner @Perl
It uses match::simple's logic. I don't think the blog post mentions match::smart at all.

tobyink,

@mjgardner @Perl
Thanks! Fixed.

tobyink,

@leonerd @Perl
Yeah, the behaviour of Leon's is virtually identical to match::simple, with the exception that match::simple supports $right->MATCH($left) as an alternative to $right being an object overloading ~~.

“Art that’s posted publicly can basically be used for anything, it’s fair use.”

Ok, so every car parked on the street is free for anyone to use for anything then? Cool. I’m working on a large scrap metal installation piece and could use a few.

tobyink,

@esther
If I left a £20,000 diamond necklace on the street overnight, and when I went to get it the next day, it was gone, I would be blamed for being irresponsible.

People do the same thing with a car of the same value, and they get taken seriously.

Can you put halloumi on pizza? My other half has decided that tonight is not only pizza night, but halloumi pizza night.

The internet seems woefully lacking in suitable recipes but I've no intention of letting that stop me.

Watch this space!

tobyink,

@losttourist as a replacement for mozzarella, no. Halloumi famously doesn't melt.

As an addition, like in a four cheese pizza, absolutely!

huh, portugal doesn't have any overseas territory anymore outside of the açores and madeira, they're i think the only european colonial power (wrong, most of them actually did outside the UK, france, and netherlands, because of course it's these guys) to really have given up all their colonies
also, the last one to leave portugal was actually macau, in 1999, i'm pretty sure

if you use Linux on your personal computer: what do you like about it?

I used to be super into customizing my window manager, but now I mostly like that it's so easy to install software, and that the environment is the same as on a Linux server

(please no arguing about whether people "should" use Linux on their personal computers, I'm just curious about why you personally like it)

I really love the here on . Unlike on previous corporate-owned platforms I’ve used, Mastodon filters allow me to hide one major source of traffic: the US.

English is my primary language and America and its culture floods the anglosphere.

I’m Australian and Dutch. I wish the best for Americans but I have no need to be kept up to date on every detail of the latest horrible thing happening in that country.

See the pics for a sample of my US filters.

tobyink,

@Brendanjones
But as an Australian, don't you feel you're missing out on food pics by filtering "tucker"?
