Is there anyone on here that has a recommendation for NVIDIA graphics cards? I haven't used them for a very long time, only AMD, so not really up to date on them.

I need it to run fine on Linux, which I hope has improved now. I will use it for not very demanding games like WoW, and for Machine Learning. I currently have an AMD Radeon RX 5700 GPU.

I was considering a Dual GeForce RTX 4070 OC, since it would fit in my box. I can't have any of the super long ones.

So, I started playing World of Warcraft again this weekend ... 😁

I've been playing it on and off since just after its European release in 2005. My oldest characters have reached legal drinking age. 😅

I stopped playing in 2021 as I really disliked the Shadowlands expansion. The one before was excellent, and I'm now playing Dragonflight from 2022, which also seems good so far. There is a new one coming after the summer or thereabouts. We'll see how long I last this time!

Atlassian is so bad at UX that it boggles the mind that they're still in business. Jira is a monster that requires infinite patience to try to wrangle into submission. I hate every moment I spend in that tool.

Over the last three weeks I've been tinkering with adding a footnotes feature to @novelwriter. It was non-trivial, as I had to come up with a syntax for it, make the indexer handle it, and add build support into HTML, markdown and Open Document. The latter took a fair bit of tinkering too.

But it is done, and merged! The final diff was +2,181 −1,338. Quite a lot, although I took the opportunity to clean up and extend some tests. Coverage's now at 99.61% 😁

A quick reminder that humans have not yet invented AI. It's an imitation puffed up by marketing. They've dressed up a parrot as Agent Smith.

"Most species do their own evolving, making it up as they go along, which is the way Nature intended. And this is all very natural and organic and in tune with mysterious cycles of the cosmos, which believes that there's nothing like millions of years of really frustrating trial and error to give a species moral fiber and, in some cases, backbone."

I just realised every week for the next four weeks will be four day work weeks!

Next week has Labour Day, then there's Ascension Day the week after, then it's Constitution Day in Norway, and finally Whit Monday the fourth week.

May is giving us a taste of the four day work week! 😊

Interesting to see how a candle pollutes the air in my living room. This is from Sunday night.

The top graph shows a sharp peak of particulates in the air when I blew out the candle. The other two show organic compounds and CO2 building up slowly and falling after the candle is out.

So, not good for air quality then! 😅

I made an attempt to build my app for MacOS on ARM64. Since I don't own a Mac, I have absolutely no idea if it runs. I only checked the content of the DMG to look for any obvious issues.

Anyone care to try? The DMGs are available as zip files in this test build: https://github.com/vkbo/novelWriter/actions/runs/8767345888

(Files are there for 14 days.)

I have to use Windows for work, and it sucks. It is mind numbingly unresponsive compared to what I'm used to.

I recently got the "New" Outlook and Teams, and I'm wondering if all newer Microsoft software is built on a shared framework called "Microsoft Bloatware".

It's nice to see that the users of my app are noticing that the window title of my fatal error dialog is quoting error messages from Hex, the computer at Unseen University in Ankh-Morpork. 😁

Thankfully, the error is in a pre-release at least. Crashes are not nice.

I've spent the last couple of evenings adding a new, pretty big feature. The net change in code is +3 lines. So, I deleted almost as much code as I added, in addition to what I rewrote.

I consider that a good pull request! 😁

The code i edited was pretty old, and had more complexity than the recent implementation needed. So a bit of legacy there too to be honest. Still ...

I've seen two partial solar eclipses in my life. One that passed over Europe in 1999, and one that passed over the arctic in 2015. First hit too far south, second too far north to be total where I lived. Still, they were pretty awesome, and I was out looking at both.

I found them both on this excellent interactive eclipse map: https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/list.html

That site is awesome on so many topics.

Hope those in the path of this one in North America get a nice view!

Looks like we're in for an era of bloatware on phones mostly there for the manufacturers to inflate their stock prices. It will certainly encourage me to hang on to my current phone for longer.

It was unlikely that any of my releases of my own project included the compromised liblzma library, since it is quite recent, but I checked anyway.

Got 5.2.2 and 5.2.4 in my AppImages, and 5.2.6 in the DMG.

I double-checked by uploading the library files to virustotal. Not as much to detect the malware, but to confirm the date when the files were first seen, which is long before the compromised version.

I have three public domain texts that I use to stress test my @novelwriter app. They are "A Tale of Two Cities", "Moby Dick", and "The King James Bible". The latter is particularly useful because it's longer that pretty much any novel out there.

I'm currently adding a tool to do global searches, and I'm stress testing by searching for all the spaces in the bible. It takes about 13 seconds, which isn't too bad, considering it's a Python GUI app!

@olafurw Remember when we talked about Python integers at work back when? Here's a really nice writeup of how they're implemented in the CPython VM.

They are by default bignums, and it takes a minimum of 28 bytes to store an integer on 64-bit platforms. 🤯
