Due to various gaps in APIs, SDKs, CLIs, etc., I still have some significant cloud service lifecycle management that happens through or scripts that run on a cron (or whenever someone remembers to run them). Like 99% of stuff is automated via Terraform, Ansible, Jenkins, etc., but there is some severe jank around the edges of absolutely everything on the internet.

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

And comments like these in the scripts to attempt to explain the ongoing crimes:

Fetch via gcloud since SDK method returns 403 for project endpoints

Me: I'm going to automate this tedious cloud thing.

IAM has entered the room.

Documentation has left the room.

AWS-backed group believes command is too central to the web to keep as-is.

My current headphones are really great and all (Sony MDR-7506) But using just one pair of headphones, it starts to feel same-y, and you can forget their strengths. I need to get more headphones with different sound characteristics.

What's everyone's favorite fairly inexpensive (under $100) headphones with really fun sound?

@OpenComputeDesign I recently got Lenovo X370 headphones and they sound great

    My number one #Mastodon tip for people is to boost more!

    Discovery sucks on Mastodon, which is partially by design, but it also means it’s hard to find new and interesting people here. If you see something cool, reach for that boost button as well!

    vwbusguy,

    @matt This is a very useful tool for finding people by interests.

    Got to take the old firetruck for a ride for the first time in a year. Battery seems in bad shape, and it needs some love on other bits as well, but it’s still so much fun to drive.
    Nonetheless I’ll probably sell it sometime soon. Anyone interested in a 40year old lovely small firetruck? 🚒

    @tiefpunkt Looks like a Vanagon based one (Kombi t3)? Is it water cooled? Diesel?

    vwbusguy,

    @tiefpunkt That thing looks awesome! Unfortunately, if I could get it here, I doubt it would pass California emissions. Diesel from that era are exempt.

    It'll be interesting in 10-15 years when smartphones fall out of style what happens to all these businesses that require you to use an app instead of having a simple, regular website for their stuff. People will be trying to contact their health insurance company through a chatbot on their old smart TV.

    Tech problems are fundamentally people problems.

    Don't hide behind the algorithm and the protocol when people aren't being treated well. Conway's Law exposes that the algorithm and protocol are a product of the people, communications, and intentions that built them.

    If people are telling us they don't feel welcome here, then we need to listen and be open to changing that. If we don't, how can we claim the tech behind our social media is worthy?

    vwbusguy,
    @vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

    "We have a federated, open source platform with moderation and millions of users, but black people don't feel welcome here."

    The first part of this tells me there's a really good thing here. The second part tells me there's a lot of work to be done and some of that work will necessarily impact how the software itself works.

    For example, we need to listen and better understand the ramifications of declaring "Quote toots aren't useful" when black people tell us they are.

    vwbusguy,
    @vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

    Splaining why it is the way it is effectively shut down a lot of otherwise potentially helpful conversations that effectively stunted Mastodon's growth and harmed its reputation.

    It shouldn't be hard to win trust back with the likes of Twitter and BlueSky being the alternatives, but it requires more than splaining the protocol.

    It would be interesting to know why there's a group that feels safer on a network with no blocking than one where you could set up your own server to be a restrictive as wanted …

    vwbusguy,
    @vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

    @cass_m I'm not sure the verdict is that BlueSky feels safer. It does explain why Black Twitter has largely remained on Twitter. It's the "devil you know" and hard to convince people to rebuild their community in a place that may not feel as safe or welcoming than what they're already on. I felt more safe and welcome on Mastodon as a white man, so I'm all the more concerned when I hear that others don't feel the same welcome here.

    seldo, to random
    @seldo@alpaca.gold avatar

    The clear message I am getting from Bluesky is that black people felt unsafe on mastodon. Black Twitter was a huge part of what made it special, and it's been notably absent on mastodon. I will be sad if mastodon loses to a less-open alternative because it couldn't figure out how to be welcoming to everyone.

    @PensiveTM @unchartedworlds @Rickd6 @Are0h Blocking isn't the full story. Many harassment accounts have numerous alt accounts and some instances have attempted to detect who has blocked them so they can identify targets. If these mechanisms work for you, be thankful. They haven't been sufficient for everyone.

    One of the saddest parts of Red Hat's layoffs is the loss of OpenSource.com. It was a great place for inexperienced writers to get on a widely-viewed platform that provided professional editing and promotion. It was such a great way for people to level up, and several of us became book authors as a result of what we learned.

    @ssfckdt @e_urq @BlackAzizAnansi I've been here at least two years longer than you, but do go off on explaining to me what I've been doing for much longer than you. If you think moderation issues on online and social don't reflect poorly on the platform itself to newcomers, then you need to stick around here a bit longer before you weigh in on these things.

    All of the posts on Mastodon about how the Blue Sky team was silly for releasing a social media network in 2023 without blocking and moderation, even in private beta, and that the Blue Sky team should have known what would happen...

    ...are being written on Mastodon: a social media platform that in 2023, still doesn't take into account that Black users face a disproportionate amount of very specific types of abuse, and is missing key features that would make the Black population safer. 🙂🙃

    @sickmatter @JessTheUnstill The real problem is when people stand in the way of others scratching said itch. Those with their itches scratched no longer feel the problem that those who haven't still feel.
