So what is his take on that tape where he talks about having top secret documents and how awesome they are but also how he can't declassify them now? Can we get kid rock up on the stand as a witness?
Hey all, we're moving into a new place soon and I want to start making it a smart home. I have some experience with wifi-based smart bulbs from TP-Link Kasa and a ring camera, but that's about it. I need to update the switches in the house anyway, so I figure that's a good place to start....
Avoiding the cloud is a good tip. It's weird to trigger a device then have that communication bounce around to different servers only to come back just to turn on a light bulb a few feet away. If one of those companies goes under or decides to shutdown the service your device is probably useless. If the internet is down so is your light bulb.
The world can be a pretty strange place, but it's good to look back and find at least one thing that was good to you today. Be that a nice conversation, a cool picture you saw, a song you heard... whatever! But if you didn't find anything good today, here's your sign: go do one thing for you, right now. Even if its just a moment...
@PrunesMakeYouPoop an instant pot is insanely useful. Way faster for many things. Less energy and water usage than just a big pot on the stove too. Different things than an air frier though.
I think the biggest thing we need to figure out is how to make it sound easier than people say it is. People get too hung up on the technicalities of how the fediverse works, and they never try it out and see that it isn't as confusing as it sounds. If we could write up a simple blurb to help promote kbin to subreddit moderators...
The option to combine feeds from multiple communities could be useful just as a view. Maybe some way to track cross posts or see other posts with the same link. Not sure how much of a pain that might be from a technical side of things or if it would just be too slow with little utility.
I ask that people modmail subreddits that have privated in protest (you can see which ones here: https://reddark.untone.uk/) and ask they put a message about kbin migration into their about section so users trying to see those subs will come here and start communities. It will help grow kbin as well as contribute to the protest....
@Kichae sure but people new to the concept likely won't understand the idea they can sign up to some random website and have access to the posts on hundreds of other sites. I signed up on kbin.social because that sounded like the place to sign up on.
They're just supposed to describe some user action or otherwise define work. They could have picked some other name but they had to come up with new names 30 other things.
@VulcanSphere if enough people still use reddit despite the outrage then the bad behavior will continue. Right now all reddit management care about is the IPO price.
@S_204 the site could go to shambles just from mods leaving. New mods will probably be put into place for the popular subs but those will probably be the worst mods and they will probably be missing tools thanks to the API issues.
I do agree that whatever effects won't be immediate I just don't think the people running reddit right now will care. All they really need to do is make reddit look valuable enough to get investors on board. The individuals at reddit with shares can then sell before people realize its going downhill. For investors shit like forcing the app usage will look like improving profits and it even might in the short term. Now to really see a shit show they have to come out with the idea of nuking adult content. I can't remember if they talked about this but I could see it being attempted. Especially if they're pushing for people to use a mobile app and mobile platforms force them to block adult content.
@Nepenthe man the only reason I installed an ad blocker was to disable the shitty nagging to install their app. They really really jonesing for app installs. That along with the API pricing paints a shit picture. They would do much better to develop an app people want to use instead of trying to force people on to it.
I'm not any kind of lgbt+ myself but I think most of the hate stims from religious values or the concept of othering. With religion they think it's morally wrong and something to stop. With othering it's about someone just being different. Some might also be in the closet and over compensating with hateful actions to hide it.
Obviously there is nothing wrong with being lgbt+ or different.
This question is especially for people who have joined in the last week. Have you used other fediverse platforms or is this your first time really using one? What do you think of it so far? Are you aware that you can comment on Lemmy posts with a Mastodon account?
Yeah, first time. Actually using an account from kbin. Some UI changes would be preferred but overall is functional. Obviously user count and topic specificity is way different.
For me I kinda question how well those communities will reform and kinda where. I suspect a lot of people won't leave yet. Maybe after mod tools go to shit and thus the communities. Maybe after the user experience suffers due to monetizing efforts. Most will probably return after the black out and token gesters and remain there for some time. Some will probably explore other platforms while jonesing for their reddit fix during the blackout at least.
I think what is missing is those communities for specific topics. The current user base on these platforms is somewhat thin because it is new. The low numbers may not support specific topics as well or at least feel very different with way fewer users. Many of the topics I frequented on reddit are missing here. Some that are here cast a much wider net simply because there are so few users. In theory I could try and seed communities here or on other platforms that I was a part of but I don't really want to play the mod game.
The Trump indictment is very funny, and the boxes in the bathroom are very funny, and the obscenely tacky decor is very funny, so you might think this cannot get any funnier.
I assure you it can. It can get much much funnier.
Trump could try to flee the country. Just think of the comedy that would bring. Please Jesus I have never prayed, but I ask only for this thing
Annoyance about the fediverse that fedi proponents don’y seem to understand:
The federated model adds almost no value to me as a user. It only begins to add value when the decentralized model becomes integrated into the user experience.
From where I sit, there is absolutely no difference between me making an account for mastodon and another account for pixelfed than me making accounts for twitter and insta. None.
Stream/Video is a beast to host though. How well can a fediverse/foss type solution support that kind of thing? Right now it seems like existing closed source companies are looking to gain market share. They were already doing that by trying to pay creators or getting banned creators.
You could find improvements with an upgrade but likely not worth it for the price. Maybe in a series or two and a price drop they'll have something more with it.
Like most other people here, I originally came here from reddit. Ive been having a blast so far, and I much prefer the forum-style of this. After about a week of using Lemmy I realized there was something intrinsic to reddit that Lemmy doesnt have. And I wont miss it. Too many people on reddit were way too horny. I was really...
If reddit ends the nsfw content for IPO reasons those users will migrate somewhere. Maybe existing forums will grow. Maybe something else will pop-up. Another wrinkle is imgur going clean for some reason. I could definitely see some Lemmy compatible instances popping up.
Seems like most people who complain about morals decaying tend to be people with a very particular moral code or people who forget the shit they got up to as a kid.

Building a smart home in 2023, where to start?

How can we smooth out the migration and help promote kbin/lemmy to subreddits and redditors?
I think the biggest thing we need to figure out is how to make it sound easier than people say it is. Why do people hate us for who we are? I don't get it
Is Lemmy your first time on the Fediverse?
This question is especially for people who have joined in the last week. Have you used other fediverse platforms or is this your first time really using one? What do you think of it so far? Are you aware that you can comment on Lemmy posts with a Mastodon account?
Hoping this is correct. Whats a Thread under a magazine, especially vs. a Microblog
And why must I create a new 'article' to make a thread and not a post - which I think makes a new microblog....
for the Reddit refugees, do you also feel a bit heartbroken?
For me it feels like breaking up with someone after many years. At the same time, I feel a bit dirty mentioning the name in the post title.
so, which Big Tech company do you think is going to shit the bed next and popularize its Fediverse/FOSS equivalent in the process?
I'm personally crossing my fingers for Discord.
