Nature reports that scientists are leaving Twitter. Overwhelmed by anti-science and far-right material, which is often shoved at them by the site’s trending topics and other algorithmic feeds…
NPR’s data shows that they lost nothing after being ostracized by the psychotic white billionaire. It counters the idea that leaving Twitter is a loss. Let’s dismiss the idea that we need to be held hostage on any platform.
In the beginning of 2010 I was registered to over 150 social media sites. The rise of the social media were exciting times. There were rarely any algorithms, no TikTok, no Instagram for Android, no ads on Twitter.
However, over the years everything went to shit. The social media sites died one by one and couple of the dominating players slowly shifted to platforms where your data was no longer yours, where you were the money machine. The sad thing is, most of the people didn't even notice this change.
"It's a good idea to put your country's flag in your profile so they can quickly know where you're from. IE, don't presume you're from a certain country."
Me, wondering if they'd recognise my country's flag or ... think it's American
Only on #Mastodon do I see people judging others being on #Substack and #X, seemingly implying that they are better humans for not being on it.
This betrays their massive privilege & ignorance of how cultures outside their own operates on #SocialMedia.
People fm less privileged countries rely on them to get their messages out. Self-hosted options are priced for Americans. It is not "the price of a cup of coffee" for everyone.
So, you are not impressing me with the virtue signalling.
I wonder if people threatening to block Facebook's/Meta's new ActivityPub-compatible social media network also automatically block emails coming from gmail.com.
I've been holding off on deleting my Twitter account, mostly for sentimental reasons, but the news about a "marketplace for unused handles" is making me reconsider.
I am not a public figure, so this might be less likely, but I still don't like the idea of having my account sold for a few bucks to promote crypto, or other scams.
I don't really link to it anywhere, but there's a few old embedded tweets on my site.
lol… just listening to the #wired podcast about how BS is already shadow banning users in an effort to censor “nude” content. Their framing is so condescending.
“Oh golly. Gosh darn it. Those tiny new internet startups should’ve known better.” types of comments abound.
It was almost like the pod was pandering to an investor.
Does anyone know how many news outlets billionaire Dorsey influences via investments?
To celebrate a one year anniversary of my blog post "A netizen’s guide to Mastodon and the fediverse" [1], I'd like to rerun one of the polls [2] from the article:
Have you ever made a donation to a fediverse server admin?

People on Bluesky say no average people use Mastodon. People on Threads say there is nobody on Bluesky any more. People on Mastodon say every platform owned by a company sucks.
How do they know this? Who I should believe? :blobsad:
I feel hopeless. I feel tired about the social media platform discussion. I have gradually reduced talking about the subject.
No offence to proponents of the Fediverse, but when I tell regular people about it, the name is a bit of a turn off. I'm sorry, it just is. It's not something to be upset about. It's just... people. So I have been trying to think of other words or terms and I think I have landed on the one I like best.
The Fediverse = The Open Social Web.
OSW for short.
