On , a biologist can post something about biology and get engagements from non-biologists. Their post could also trend for the day and be widely received by people of all different walks of life. On Bluesky this CANNOT possibly happen. Everyone is in their own closed-membership algorithmic bubble/feed where only the same large accounts are amplified. You can't break through these barriers. It's a rerun of what led to twitter's demise. It's not "new " at all.

Bon bah 2000 comptes Mastodon qui me suivaient ont été désabonnés de mon compte. Problème d'une instance à l'autre, peut-être. N'hésitez pas à partager si vous êtes sur Piaille ou autre.

I had a Twitter list "standard stuff" where I listed the core accounts I definitely wanted to hear about. This fav list grew over the years and had 120 users in total. These were active users that in the golden era posted every day. These were the ones I wanted to read whenever possible.

I wanted to see what's the status today so I went through every account and here's the result. By "inactive" I mean users who haven't posted anything in two months or more.

    • 20% have completely deleted their account (the list now has 95 users)
    • 36% still post frequently
    • 64% are inactive or quit using Twitter
    • 30% are inactive without any reason given
    • 23% of those who still post on X also have active Mastodon, Bluesky or Threads accounts
    • 1% quit and moved to Bluesky
    • 1% quit and moved to Mastodon
    • 1% is active on Threads

Cory Doctorow on the money again: "The problem with, say, Meta, is only partially that Mark Zuckerberg is personally monumentally unsuited to serving as the unelected, unaccountable permanent social media czar for three billion people. The real problem is that no one should have that job. That job shouldn’t exist. We don’t need to find a better Mark Zuckerberg. We need to abolish Mark Zuckerberg."

I've decided I like the trolls who say "if you block me, it means I win." It makes me giggle to imagine them all alone in the dark, by themselves, just winning.

One of your followers asked for tips how to spot online foreign disinfo bots/trolls so here are a couple of links for people to read:

The second link is to an interactive article so we can judge the difference between a real account and that of a bot/troll.

As someone who works in , I'm baffled by some folks here on who talk down about users of other platforms in a patronising or even insulting way, only to immediately add: "I don't understand why they don't come here!"

From a goal-oriented comms point of view, this makes zero sense if your true goal is to drive people here, no matter how well justified your criticism of other platforms might be.

I really like it here, but come on folks... 😉

David Lee Perez died last year while drinking shots in exchange for cash on TikTok. His death was livestreamed to hundreds of viewers.

Despite this tragedy, TikTokers continue to drink for money on Live — and some claim to be sponsored by alcohol brands.

Is American media dead? Thousands of layoffs. Publications shutting down. News deserts. The press is collapsing, as old business models no longer work. But where does that leave democracy and the notion of an informed society?

We curated this collection of articles on the issue including content by @jeffjarvis, @niemanlab, @TheConversationUS and more.

Wow its nearing November which means it's been a year since I am on #Mastodon! I want to still say I am the happiest I have ever been on #SocialMedia - I have met so many wonderful people from around the world, especially from the #Malaysia #CDrama and #KDrama world.
Lovely people who just want to spread fun and positivity. It just never felt that way on #Twitter. It felt very competitive & angry there. Here I can just carefully filter my feed to avoid it. Thank you for existing, #Fediverse!

I'll do it again in #english, maybe it is of interest for others too:

@heiseonline is on of the biggest official accounts on #Mastodon by a german media organization. It's now a year old and I had a look into the ~62k followers. Turns out, that federation in the #fediverse seems to work: Less than a fourth are from mastodon.social, the rest are on more than 1900 different instances.

Elon Musk declared he wouldn’t comply with orders from Brazil’s Supreme Court to ban far-right accounts involved in an attempted coup.

It shows how Musk uses Twitter to amplify fascism, but also why many countries are increasingly fed up with unaccountable US tech firms.
