Our Performance Review of Baldur's Gate 3 has finally arrived! We played through the entire game, which did take awhile, but we wanted to be thorough!

I played one of this game’s endless march of pre-release versions last year on . It provided some of the finest hours of gaming I’ve ever experienced, stopped dead by one of the absolute worst single moments.

I hope they’ve tuned that balance a little better! (Though honestly that mostly means “make non-permadeath the first option on the new-game screen, and rename the options to suggest it’s the best starting place”)

@akahn @jmac it’s been a while since I’ve played it, but always starting in the same town and going through the same motions after dying was tedious, so I didn’t make very many attempts. But I read there’s an “rpg mode“ now without permadeath?

jmac,
@jmac@masto.nyc avatar

@spinning_bird I played it early last year, and it did indeed have a "role-playing mode" that is identical to "classic mode" except that you get a restorable checkpoint every time you visit a settlement.

A new upcoming plugin for the will tell you if an official third-party store has a lower price, and it looks like it will save us tons of money!

@steamdeckhq Woo! Try to use it mostly for the Big Studio titles, pay full price to the independent game devs if you can! :comfygamer: :crowlove:

@gamingonlinux no local multiplayer is a real bummer.

When playing a shooter on with trackpad, I saw a suggestion to use the left trigger for firing.
It makes a lot of sense, not only considering the SDs size and the strain it puts on thumb + index finger to have to stretch so far, but also in regards to precise movement of the thumb.

It makes me wonder why not all games have the trigger on the left. Seems like there could be merit even when aiming with the stick. (At which I'm awful anyhow.)

@spinning_bird right handed people gotta right hand I think is probably it.

I might give this a shot. Seems like a no brainer.

tournesol,
@tournesol@peculiar.florist avatar

@Octavia ouiii c'est vraiment une pépite ce jeu
pareil que toi, je ne m'attendait pas du tout au gameplay et les personnages sont tellement bien écris que chaque choix était difficile à prendre :neocat_heart:
je plussoie cette recommandation :cat_thumbs_up::bugcat_thumbsup:

Octavia,
@Octavia@piaille.fr avatar

@KzintiCV if the game is THAT good then I see no reason why not!

@darth Dwarf Fortress has been good enough to play for the last 20 years and Stellaris has been good for nearly 10.

I bought a Steam Deck! I would've got one much sooner, but they still aren't officially available in Australia. I finally found a good importer and picked up the OLED 512 GB model.

I'm extremely happy with it. Right off the bat, I was struck by how great the ergonomics felt. It fits my hands near-perfectly. Heavier than the Nintendo Switch, but not too heavy.

Performance is good - comparable to my aging GTX 970. Having that in such a small form factor seems amazing.

dHeinemann,
@dHeinemann@fosstodon.org avatar

@popey I also bought the official dock.

Unfortunately, it's a bit fiddly to manually plug in the USB C cable - nowhere near as easy to use as the Nintendo Switch in that respect.

It also doesn't seem to handle being unplugged or plugged in mid-game. In my experience, this causes the game's audio to stop working until it's exited and opened again.

Other than that, it works great with the TV, including with my 8bitdo Bluetooth controller. I'm really enjoying it!

popey,
@popey@mastodon.social avatar

@dHeinemann Yeah, the port location is a shame. Especially when it's in a gap under the TV, designed for a set-top box. Juist about fits!
I have the 8bitdo ultimate controller which has a wireless dongle. Very nice !

I'm wondering if you are also a game developer and you have a Steam Deck how often do you play with it?

A year ago I really wanted a Steam Deck, firstly to make the Erra: Exordium game compatible, before the release I got a Deck and I used it as a developer. 4 months have passed since the release and I haven't used it all this time

ugurcan,
@ugurcan@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@maxim A lot.

It’s great for streaming games inside the house. I’m about to finish AC: Mirage all by streaming from Xbox.

Time to time I use it to do Linux stuff as well. I know few people using it for running Docker containers.

Currently at Level 12 with my characters on Sea Of Stars, I feel like I’m inching ever so closely to the end here. Been doing as much as the game has to offer, and this far, it has delivered! From the art design, to the music, and natural how it feels like Chrono Trigger! Absolutely love this gem of a game!

Narf, my is broken again (first time I RMA'd).

It just won't turn on the internal signal at all (touch works though). In fact, it doesn't even boot (or POST) if no external monitor is connected. While it at least fully boots with the external monitor, it doesn't detect the internal one.

I've tried:

  • Updating the BIOS, and
  • resetting the DC firmware (as outlined here: https://reddit.com/comments/17zgio3/comment/ka17204)
  • Putting the device into battery storage mode and waking it up again
  • pressing a lot of weird button combos people posted on the interwebs

I don't wanna RMA again. Like, not every half a year.

maxolotl,
@maxolotl@social.tchncs.de avatar

@ljrk Damn that sucks. The last time I heard about this issue, the PSA was "do not let your SteamDeck battery go to 0%"[0].

Though, RMA seems to be the only solution, if you have this issue :/

ljrk,
@ljrk@todon.eu avatar

@maxolotl Yep, that's probably been the issue :/

I still hope to be able to debug it, since at least being able to boot it with the external monitor + in theory being able to reset the DC should at some point solve it.

Can anyone recommend a lapdock?

I want a machine to use with a Linux phone, steam deck, Samsung Dex and to manage a server.

Review of available lapdocks suggest they all have hardware flaws. This is an area where @PINE64 or @frameworkcomputer could make a difference.

@linmob @marius @PINE64 @frameworkcomputer do you have any experience with NexDock or other similar devices?

linmob,

@dubstar_04 Not first hand, sadly, no (and I likely won't ever unless my Lap Dock breaks). I know there are some people who have used NexDock devices with Linux Phones (e.g., Librem 5) - @kyle for example. @PINE64 @frameworkcomputer
