Remove Package without Dependency Checks Using Pacman

How to force removal of a system package without checking for dependencies using Pacman on the Arch Linux operating system.

What is your favorite helper?

I personally use Yay (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/yay) since it pretty much got everything I want/need 🙂

henriqueffc,

@jhx I use Yay too

fvbever,

https://repology.org/repositories/graphs I found this on Hacker News and I really should take a look at using the package manager on all my systems. I wonder if it could replace the AUR repository entirely. I recently played a bit with the actual for work and that was a blast though it likely won't be a good fit for our usecase.

@fvbever Yes, it can and it is arguably more up to date and maintained

Bug sur (parce que la première à y faire face ?) ? La dernière version de Mesa (23.3.2) fait planter X.org, aussi bien sur GPU Nvidia qu’Intel (et donc probablement AMD aussi).

https://gitlab.archlinux.org/archlinux/packaging/packages/mesa/-/issues/5

@ilyess just wait until you have a really old installation and get all of this nostalgic feeling by browsing around your configs

ilyess,

@fabiscafe I actually had a glimpse of that already. Had to go dig in my old home folder (which I kept around just in case) to figure out the config I used for a cli tool 😅

tin,

Had to chroot into my vanilla install today to reinstall the kernel. Not sure what went wrong, but something broke during the update. Was back up and running in a few minutes.

That install is a daily driver that's well over two years old at this point, first time I've ever had to chroot in to fix something on any of my / machines. Who's unstable?

adamsdesk, (edited )
@adamsdesk@fosstodon.org avatar

@tin Arch Linux is an wonderful operating system. I've been using it too as a daily driver for over 7 years now.

Last night, my personal computer lost power while doing a package update. Unbootable, ofc. So I boot up a live iso, try to chroot into it. Can't use pacman to fix because gnupg is broken. Try to pacstrap gnupg, but that can't overwrite files. Manually delete gnupg files one by one. Accidentally delete /bin.

Accidentally delete /bin.

Gru's plan meme so appropriate here.

#ArchLinux

aurocha,

@loshmi Oh shit... Reinstall, I presume. Sometimes Arch it's "ooops"...

fidel,

@loshmi I believe would have helped here. I'm getting a new computer soon and my plan is to use btrfs snapshots before each upgrade for easy rollbacks.

Guys important questions:

Can I say "I use Arch, btw" if I'm using an Arch based distro?

And can I just instead say "I use [arch based distro], btw", or will people just look at me weird?

Please and thanks for the helppp 🙏🙏

runarcn,

@kohelet nah, only if you install pure arch. however, if someone asks you what you run when you need support, feel free to say arch as it saves the entire "looking up a distro which is basically arch with an installer" thingy

fabiscafe,
@fabiscafe@mstdn.social avatar

@kohelet You dont use Arch if you dont use Arch. What you say doesnt really matter. People lie all the time.

@myname I'm just uninstalling more and more of Arch's packages :D Each time I pacman -Syu, I think "Oh, could I install this via Nix?"

myname,
@myname@chaos.social avatar

@blinry That's interesting, I might give it a try. But honestly, I will probably end up switching back for packages if issues arrive.
For example, I have nginx configured to use a wildcard certificate, but I failed to make grocy use the same one, because there simply was no setting for that.

Does Arch Linux have a way to apply custom patches to an AUR package and automatically reapply them when installing updates? Would be cool.

#ArchLinux #Arch #Linux #AUR

MolarFox,
@MolarFox@furry.engineer avatar

@fell this would be a really cool feature actually, like some sort of extension to an aur-compatible package manager / pacman wrapper

It should also know when the package update introduces a breaking change that would affect the places otherwise modified by the custom patch

techsaviours,

Just a heads up!

If you are using the hardened kernel on Arch Linux, you may experience a kernel panic with the new 6.5.13 release. Go back to 6.5.12.

Basically:

  • start iso
  • mount / and /boot
  • arch-chroot /mnt
  • pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/linux-hardened-6.5.12.hardened1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst
  • don't forget docs and headers, if you have installed it

Check https://gitlab.archlinux.org/archlinux/packaging/packages/linux-hardened/-/issues/2

fell,
@fell@ma.fellr.net avatar

A regular #ArchLinux install takes up roughly 1 GB of space, because it comes with firmware for all possible hardware.

Is there a way to safely and automatically remove unneeded firmware?

#Linux #Firmware #AskFedi

dvzrv,

@fell not yet, but there is a ticket about splitting it further. So it's quite likely to get much smaller in the near future 🙂

fell,
@fell@ma.fellr.net avatar

@dvzrv I'm not against "shipping" the system with everything it needs, though. It's nice to be able to boot Arch on anything with a x86_64 CPU.
