Your turn! White to move and… win/draw/lose? 🤔 What would you play?

jpages,
@jpages@mastodon.online avatar

@lichess If I read correctly, it is a mate in 12 moves (1. Rf2 Ke3 2. Rf3 Ke4 3. Re3 Kd4 4. Re4 Kd5 5. Rd4 Kc5 6. Rd5 Kc6 7. Rc5 Kb6 8. Rc6 Kb7 9. Rb6 Ka7 10. Rb7 Ka8 11. Ra7 Kb8 12. Ra8 mate).

This is the equivalent of a "shicho" (a go tactical motif) in chess.

I've long thought that chess would be the killer app for mixed reality.

This is not quite it:
https://mixed-news.com/en/meta-quest-3-mr-chess-hands-on/

Yeah, I know chess is mostly an abstract thing that you play in your head, but the aesthetic of moving real pieces, and seeing virtual pieces move in response would be cool too see for at least 5 minutes 😉

Hoping that a version will appear in my lifetime that doesn't have the "Big Zucker" mascot.

I have always wondered if computers would still beat humanity at chess if they had to run on 20 Watts (that's what the brain consumes). It seems a fairer playing ground than sitting across a TPU array. How many Raspberry Pis does Stockfish need to beat Magnus Carlsen?

Rjdlandscapes,
@Rjdlandscapes@mastodon.nz avatar

@Armavica a modern phone is quite a powerful computer and uses about 5 watts, would smash most players I suspect

Based on your feedback following the loss of chess24 as a platform to watch live chess events, our team has been working on major changes to Lichess broadcasts. We have summarised the changes in our Broadcast Updates blog!

@lichess this is amazing! well done! And yes, chess24 and their incredible commentators David Howell, Jouvanka Houska, Kaja Snare and Harry the h-pawn Ginger GM was the best. Entertaining, high quality. Again, great job! I just checked it out, looks great!

I've now ported Sargon - the 1978 classic award-winning chess game to - written in 100% . Now that it works properly, there's a bit of a roadmap of enhancements I can do. Get your chess fix here https://github.com/sijnstra/agon-projects/tree/main/sargon

We have continued to make lots of changes to our broadcasts, including support for team events and the integration of a FIDE player database to automatically add the correct player names, ratings & titles.
See all of it in action in the 9th round of Bundesliga!

I was in the "This is definitely a draw" group. Even after trying on the board 😩 .

My grandmother was Scottish Ladies Chess Champion. She was a highly competitive bridge player. She also held a PhD in early ophthalmics which she wrote before WW2. On marrying my grandfather a research vet (who didn’t have a doctorate) he got an academic job and she was told she could only be part time as a demonstrator in the labs. We owe it to women like her to keep beating on the trail they blazed.

Just stumbled across this December 2010 edition of Chess Life (which I'd never seen before).

It has a review by two-time US Women's Champion Jennifer Shahade of the chess fiction anthology MASTERS OF TECHNIQUE to which I contributed. She has some very nice things to say!

Check this interview with her in Vanity Fair about the TV series QUEEN'S GAMBIT:

Vera Menchik, 1st Women World Champion, was born in 1906.
Strong players who lost to her were said to be "members" of a "club". Notable members are Euwe, Reshevsky and Colle, while among "candidates" (who drew) there are Najdorf and her trainer Maroczy.

Random thought/ feature request.. I wish chess.com had an option where an AI could play out a game when a irl opponent resigns. Sometimes it would be cool to see how and endgame might play out.

Well, I can't say I'm surprised, but nonetheless its notable that is now embroiled in a discussion of discrimination & ... that would not seem unusual;

what is it about ?

this is a rhetorical Q.; I have a pretty good idea about [, the threat any woman might pose to (insecure) men & why actually ever more shrill is a sign of a world changing, not the reinforcement of an existing power structure....]

This is certainly not a new discussion in the chess world. It comes to light in MSM every so often, but my experience is that little is changing to make chess generally more inclusive.

ramsey,
@ramsey@phpc.social avatar

Correct me if I’m wrong, but in , if a puzzle says the opposing king must “fall” in two moves, that means you can make up to two moves to checkmate the opposing king—not that you have two attempts to checkmate them. Right?

ramsey,
@ramsey@phpc.social avatar

@itsjoshbruce It appeared to be counting attempts to solve, but really, I had 3 attempts, and it reset the board after each incorrect move. I assumed I would get to try 2 moves at a time.

itsjoshbruce,
@itsjoshbruce@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey: That’s messed up (perfectly valid assumption, though). Constrains the potential for “unthought of solution” by the player.

No wonder people think there’s only one right way to do something. lol

pa,

@lichess Would sincerely love to get a list view back for broadcasts — the grid makes it much more difficult to quickly scan the page for a specific tournament.
