Honestly had a really weird introduction to my new iPad Pro. After the hour long data transfer was complete I tried using it but it was like walking through quicksand. Games were practically unplayable and video looked terrible.
I figured it was because it was still downloading and installing a ton of apps but even after that appeared done it was still doing it.
After a power cycle it’s running like a champ now. This screen is so gorgeous.

I saw this article on Hacker News, and I've never felt more seen in my entire life. I gave away my iPad this year and I forgot until I saw this article - I always end up using my MacBook or my Thinkpad to get stuff done as the iPad is just utterly restricted at the software layer.
@soheb the iPads are such expensive toys (no productivity gains) that I say it is the price of the hardware and not the limitations of the iPadOS that are holding it back. 30% cheaper will be a lot better.
iPad: Für mich seit einigen Jahren keine Notwendigkeit mehr. Mir genügt die Kombination von Macbook Air mit M1-Chip und iPhone 13 Pro vollkommen. I should point out that no one can get any work done on iPads. 🙃
@chartier Complete non-sequitur from your point but we discovered the Chicago Athletic Association last winter. Can't believe I lived here for nearly a decade and never discovered it before.
And to echo your point, I have a Galaxy Tab S6 Lite and honestly, with a keyboard, I can do about 85% of tasks I would want to do.
@jasonmcfadden I liked the mini a lot when I had one here. Surprisingly versatile and capable. Although I’m sadly now ‘eyes failing’* years old and so am not sure something with smaller text will be the way forward for me!
Instead of making the already-too-thin iPad Pro thinner they should have added more battery capacity. People rave about the battery life of iPads , but if you use processor intensive applications they don’t last all day. Far from it. From the very beginning I used my iPad Pro plugged in, because it didn’t last a days painting.
My 2018 #iPad Pro was such a great purchase. Five and a half years later the A12x, 4GB, 4G are still perfectly fine for iOS. I am mildly tempted by the new pencil, purple tint option of the new Air, and the screen of the new Pro, but none of that would change how I use an iPad, how much I use it or what I use it for. Let's see if the next iOS changes that.
iPad Pro users. "We want something closer to, or just, MacOS”
Apple. "Look we made it thinner.”
Us. "Ok, but a more powerful desktop class or hybrid OS would be great. Scaled up iOS isn't really very Pro.”
Apple. "But... thinner. Games are even better on this one.”
I really do wonder what the breakdown of iPad Pro users is. How many buy one just to or mostly play games?
How many are doing movie production?
How many want something that's laptop power, but more portable?
Can’t help but notice some anemic comparisons in the #iPad announcement:
M2 “nearly 50% faster” than M1
M4 “50% faster CPU” than M2
The M1/M2 are no slouch, but sounds like #AppleSilicon CPU performance is plateauing. If the new iPads are not compatible with old ($$$) keyboards, that could further dampen the urge to upgrade.
I am super excited! 🤩 I think the new #iPad will make the M4 chip the primary differentiator as the sizes seem to be the same as predecessors (according to rumors).
#Apple is starting the event at 10 AM EDT on Tuesday & I believe they will stream it via #YouTube & on their website.
Lots of #iPad-chuntering in the #Apple-sphere ahead of the announcements next week, and honestly, I think it’s Apple’s approach to the iPad that pisses me off the most.
It’s where it’s most obvious that they like money and don’t want to have to sacrifice any. So they charge £1250 for an iPad Pro that has the raw processing power to be an incredible computer, but they crippled it with iPadOS in order to incentivise people to also buy a Mac.
