#Wikileaks #Assange #PressFreedom #Media #Journalism #USA #UK: "To my mind, Julian Assange is in some ways recognizably a journalist. He’s also a publisher, an entrepreneur, an activist, a whistleblower, an information anarchist and a hacker. That’s true of many of this new breed of net warriors.

But in the work we did together when I was editor of The Guardian and he was editor of WikiLeaks we collaborated on a series of groundbreaking stories which were absolutely journalistic.

However, to many journalists Assange is not a proper “journalist,” and they can’t really see what his fate has to do with theirs. I think that’s a mistake.

This week Assange may learn his fate when judges in the UK High Court consider final representations from lawyers on both sides over the bid to extradite him to the US — where he could face a lengthy spell in a maximum security prison."

Most journalists aren't equipped to not fall into this trap. Keeping in mind, journalists have partisan biases, too. Journalists vote.

"Don't fall for MAGA's 'election integrity' con job"

https://www.salon.com/2024/05/19/dont-fall-for-magas-election-integrity-con-job/

"Journalists — and the rest of us — need to quit parroting Republicans' transparent lies about voting"

"Multiple phenomena are at work, but the two most important are these: First is the fact that members of the mainstream whose job it is to both inform and contextualize the nation’s politics have lost their nerve. Terrified of accusations of being “out of touch” at best and “liberally biased” at worst, they have abdicated any responsibility to render even the most fundamental judgments of what is and isn’t true when it comes to Trump."

CBC has whitewashed Israel’s crimes in Gaza. I saw it firsthand

Working for five years as a producer at the public broadcaster, I witnessed the double standards and discrimination in its coverage of Palestine—and experienced directly how CBC disciplines those who speak out

The Etilaat Roz was once the most widely circulated newspaper in Kabul, but everything changed in August 2021 when the Taliban seized power in .

Moving and important documentary about and brutal authoritarian oppression. Very reminiscent of “While we watched”, with Ravish Kumar in India. These are real heroes and I feel we have much to learn here.

Every political reporter and pundit talking about pulling 10-15% in the polls knows (or should know) that that means like 2% in November.

And the lion's share of those votes will come from cranky people who usually vote third party.

JoshuaHolland,
@JoshuaHolland@mastodon.social avatar

But what about Ross Perot?!?

In a much less polarized era, Perot was leading both Clinton and Bush in June polls.

is giving John Kasich a platform to say that Democrats are telling him that Joe Biden may not be the Democratic nominee on live TV, using something akin to "I'm not saying it is true, but many people are saying..."

If North American democracies manage to survive the upcoming election cycles, we must remove the ability for private and corporate interests to overtly or covertly influence & manipulate our information spaces.

Interesting approach. But it's commercial, not decentralized, and is backed by Sam Altman and more Big Tech honchos, so my first reaction is skepticism.

@metin Interesting read, but I see some fundamental problems.

Even if this project were open source, it would still be impossible to know what the algorithm/AI is doing. Moreover, even if there are no followers, there will be some other not-so-obvious metric used to favor posts over others; there has to be, because the algorithm has to prioritize what to show you.

I think this is very dangerous and easily exploitable, just like existing platforms with non-transparent algorithms 😬

Culturally, The Big Breakfast on Channel 4 was the epitome of the 90s in Britain and pre-dated, perhaps even laid the foundations for the media revolution that predicated Cool Britainnia and with it, Blair's political popularity.

It was live, anarchic, bright, irreverent and very Channel 4. It's place in media history is often overlooked, but I suspect it has more influence on the socio-political zeitgeist than it's given credit for...

@gerrymcgovern I deleted 79,125 'promotional' emails from my Gmail account yesterday.

Didn't think I really needed them.
Didn't think they were useful.

Why do I get so many of these completely useless messages?
Why is so much time and energy expended on these hopeless things that most people completely ignore?
And why should we keep storing them, year after year?

What a terrible waste.

, & most of MSM , have helped poison the brains of voters. The outlets have bashed Pres Biden, eclipsing what they did to HRC, while giving & Republicans undue credit:

"That’s right: A flat majority says that economic conditions in our country are “poor.” Even though they simultaneously say that their own lives are going pretty well."
