All my old slides contain dead links to my old Twitter account. To avoid that in the future I got myself a dedicated domain that points to whichever social media I'm using primarily at the moment.
"More than 180 New Zealand public agencies have transferred masses of data to Microsoft cloud computing servers in Australia for storage and processing since 2019. Sensitive courts data could be headed that way."
"The NDMS [National Disease Management System] was being hosted within a 'private isolated section' of Amazon's 'cloud' of data warehouse servers in Sydney."
At our recent AC meeting in Hiroshima, Japan 🇯🇵 @p20n, spoke on Data sovereignty.
Data sovereignty is the ongoing effort of individuals and organizations to oversee the data they produce, store, disseminate, and exchange.
Pierre-Antoine, W3C Data Strategist, evaluated several organizations and projects concerning data sovereignty and autonomy, exploring potential future collaboration opportunities. #DataSovereignty
The successful #Mastodon and #PeerTube instances for #EU institutions run by @EDPS will be shut down on May 18th 😥
It seems that the #EuropeanCommission and #EVP have no interest in promoting independent, #bigtech-free and low-surveillance European platforms and thus a free and democratic discourse…

This allows you to follow #creators directly from multiple platforms through "sources" such as #youtube#soundcloud#peertube etc and also support them through their preferred funding type. Removing the middleman and giving them back control on their "brand/identity" without being locked in.
"This sounds very much like an acknowledgment that stashing one's data in the Cloud for Sovereignty will not exempt it from prying eyes, although Microsoft insisted: 'The access is typically required in response to customer support requests. In such situations, Microsoft engineers can be granted temporary access with valid business justification'."
What this does point to is that data sovereignty advocacy is making any impact. Government IT decision-makers now feel obliged to at least handwave at it, whether or not they fully understand it. While corporate DataFarmers feel obliged to sell something vaguely resembling it.
I'm always amazed at how many hardcore tech people 'don't have time for self-hosting', preferring to entrust their precious data to corporate providers. It sorta blows me away, as for someone tech savvy, it's such a trivial amount of time/energy (based on my own experience).
Having control over my own data means a lot to me and I'm surprised others aren't motivated by that. Their trust of corporations is... ill advised.

I wrote a short story about this a few years ago, called 'Thoughtbill':
"We also believe this foundational policy will be ever more important in view of recent breakthroughs in artificial intelligence creating opportunities for the NZ Government to leapfrog and deliver world-class public services to Kiwis. We look forward to continuing to share our cloud and AI policy expertise as well as exploring together how responsible AI deployment can transform Aotearoa in the years to come."

They recorded his grandmother speaking & now they are taking legal action to prevent him from accessing the language & speaking his own language. He is a language instructor.
