The US renews FISA bill with a major expansion of warrantless surveillance of non-US citizens.

This makes US cloud services incompatible with GDPR, and underlines the importance of solutions like Nextcloud.

Dubbed “one of the most dramatic and terrifying expansions of government surveillance authority in history.” as reported by the @eff

People always complain #Nextcloud is slow or doesn't work. It's not Nextcloud 😃

If it can handle

  • 2.2 million active users
  • Store 3.5 billion files
  • Totaling 7.2 petabytes of data

It can handle your #homelab or business needs just fine if set up correctly without network issues 😉

This allows you to follow #creators directly from multiple platforms through "sources" such as #youtube #soundcloud #peertube etc and also support them through their preferred funding type. Removing the middleman and giving them back control on their "brand/identity" without being locked in.

"This sounds very much like an acknowledgment that stashing one's data in the Cloud for Sovereignty will not exempt it from prying eyes, although Microsoft insisted: 'The access is typically required in response to customer support requests. In such situations, Microsoft engineers can be granted temporary access with valid business justification'."

What this does point to is that data sovereignty advocacy is making any impact. Government IT decision-makers now feel obliged to at least handwave at it, whether or not they fully understand it. While corporate DataFarmers feel obliged to sell something vaguely resembling it.

I'm always amazed at how many hardcore tech people 'don't have time for self-hosting', preferring to entrust their precious data to corporate providers. It sorta blows me away, as for someone tech savvy, it's such a trivial amount of time/energy (based on my own experience).

Having control over my own data means a lot to me and I'm surprised others aren't motivated by that. Their trust of corporations is... ill advised.

ibeardslee,

@davemosk and this is why matters. Businesses in Aotearoa really need to consider what they are storing on US owned cloud services. Even if that data is being stored on disks in data centres in NZ, if it is run by a US owned cloud service, it is not sovereign.

Really great and informative discussion about an important topic and how it relates to open science.
