After a recent move, fiber install and a U6-LR added now rethinking my equipment. I outgrew a 6U rack and have a 15U ordered + a #unifi dream machine pro for scalability and to power more POE cameras. The U6-LR amazes me at its coverage. Now researching for a future addition of a rack mount NAS. Recommendations needed.
I’m retiring the following and it will probably go to my son.
Anybody running a desktop environment on the same machine as #Proxmox? Because of space/location constrains, I'm wanting to have the same computer run Proxmox and KDE. I know it's not recommended, but if I can make it work relatively securely and dependably, it would make my setup much easier.
Is the best way to run periodic functions, not necessary time-critical, just needs to happen in the correct hour or day, #cronjobs
I am running a #Python bot in a #Docker container, but want weekly or daily things to happen. Adding this to the main loop seems inefficient, because checks will unnecessary be done.
Should I rather use a #Linux image, run the script in the container and then just have cronjobs running in the container, rather than using a Python image.
Storage, memory and processing isn't actually a problem, so using a larger and beefier image is possible.
If I wanted to build a gigabit router able to handle HD video streams and use any Linux distro what would be the minimum specs recommended ? #HomeLab#Networking
A little in a struggle currently....
I want to also setup a Hypervisor for my #homelab
Got a #OptiPlex here with a i7 6700 and 32GB of RAM (Micro form factor).
Maybe I'm overthinking here a lot... but I try to hold down the electricity cost as much as possible.
It's my dream to eventually one day own a real NAS. Something that is fairly small, can hold 5-6 drives, run a few Docker containers and not break the bank. I've been running my old gaming PC for many years, swapping out drives and running without RAID (but have backups), but I hate the physical footprint it takes. NAS' are super expensive IMO.
Does anyone here have a program or app the recommend to make a network diagram (layout of switches, routers, patch panel, etc)? I tried diagrams.net and lucid and they both make me cranky. I am looking for something for my home setup where I can make the difference between fiber, utp and poe very clear and not have to manually click every connection 6+ times and routing is at least semi-sane.
Basically what I learned last week is that #Rancher#RKE2 is #k3s on steroids and that is awesome. It also means if you're a hobbyist learning #Kubernetes in a self-hosted #homelab, much of the concepts carry over in a familiar way to the bigger "enterprise" product (which is also FOSS).
I think my next Home Lab experiment will be installing some kind of music library manager. I have Plex already and tried using that a few years ago, but it wasn't exactly my cup of tea for music.
My library is large. Over 25 years of collected music in MP3/MP4 format.
Installed several years ago. Seemed to work fine, wasn't using it for much.
Recently put a Wifi AP on it, where 1Gb speed became important. Worked fine for about a week.
Sometime last night, it "died" and dropped to 100Mb. Cable itself is fine. Had to redo both RJ45s, and the cat6 keystone connectors on both ends...weird.
After all that, running at 1Gb again. It's only about 20ft long. It's indoors and in the walls where the cat can't eat it.
We need ActivityPub platforms that go beyond core social media concepts. @bonfire is exploring modular extensions and access control as building blocks for creative ideas.
Here's my guide to the install process on my little homelab system.
