I was today years old when I found out that you can host your own Firefox account server to synchronize your Firefox browser data without having to use a third party server.
We need ActivityPub platforms that go beyond core social media concepts. @bonfire is exploring modular extensions and access control as building blocks for creative ideas.
Here's my guide to the install process on my little homelab system.
Hello fediverse,
because it's common in this space, this is a little #introduction
I'm completely new to all this Social Media stuff and I was very skeptical about it in the past. Due to the evil nature of their corporations, I avoid Facebook and Twitter like the plague. But because ActivityPub is a free protocol and not bound to corporate interests it seems interesting. I'm not sure if I'll like it or post frequently - I'm just trying it out.
I'm an enthusiastic computer, GNU/Linux and *BSD hobbyist. I like to tinker around with hard- and software in my little homelab. I'm in no way a professional or expert of any kind in the IT field. Just doing things for fun.
Also interested in Gemini and the smolnet/indieweb. The way the internet is heading these days isn't very promising. When I discovered the gemini protocol in 2021 I was imediately intrigued. So I set up my own little capsule which I now regard as my private home in the online world (link in profile).
Hi folks! 👋 I’m like 12 years late to this microblogging thing but I’m basically starting on Mastodon so here’s my #introduction
I’m a Washington, DC-area nerd in his 30s who’s into #opensource, #python, #linux, (among other things), babysitting a #homelab, sorta into #amateurradio and electronics, electric vehicles, collecting-and-quickly-abandoning expensive hobbies, and obeying my two cats’ orders.
…I occasionally make an effort to go outside and get sunshine… sometimes.
In today's blog post I continue the theme of degoogling one's life. I talk about my experiences with @invidious, an alternative open-source frontend to Youtube that can be self hosted.
Do you want to watch YT videos without actually going to Youtube site? Take a look!
I've been overwhelmed with the positive feedback from the community since last week's launch and have been trying to add projects as fast as the requests come in.
Two new features since launch: License details added to the project tiles and a "Recently Added" sort option for users to easily view projects added since their last visit.
Next feature on the list: RSS feed for newly added project notifications
Enlightening, isn't it? There are other empty blocks, but they are either fairly standard or are described elsewhere in the document.
If you are familiar with #helm, you won't despair because you have the power of analytics.enabled: false. That works on the rest of this chart and is the standard way to en/disable things.
It doesn't work that way.
Let me save you some time with the terrible new #github code search. Here is the actual syntax:
"analytics.reporting_enabled: false"
I've got an idea. Let's form an IoT company. One that makes really great, high quality, well designed products. You know, ones that don't drop out every time you look at them wrong. We offer them cheap, burning through some VC money.
We will certainly fail. But for one glorious moment, people will know good IoT. And the next time somebody tries to sell them crap, they get beaten to a pulp with their shitty products.
And perhaps then, we will actually get good IoT stuff.
This time a short one, I'm presenting my small weekend project, a NAS running ZFS on a Raspberry Pi Zero. The idea was to have a RAID1 mirror using two USB drives, but that did not turn out so well. But hey, it's the journey that matters. And it's running ZFS so it's serious stuff.
I posted this today, in 2013, on Facebook:
"Computer science, the real one, is what happens at night by someone in front of their computer. It's what happens during the day while it's snowing or the sun is shining outside, it's finding new solutions to old problems or old solutions to new problems. It's done in a garage, in a basement, or in a room. Not in the laboratories of big companies: in those places, everything is just packaged and wrapped up. True computer science is like art: a spark and an idea, out of pure passion. Everything else is just business and marketing."
💘 more cores 💘 more ram 💘 more ports 💘 more more more 💘
going to validate whether this SO-DIMM format will work in my TuringPi2, but generally underlying all technical plans, a vast majority of my home-lab acquisitions are solely because I want it and it's fun!
