Found these two amazing books at the thrift shop last week.

I am obsessed with Let's Study Japanese. I love the graphic design and I've always wanted to learn Japanese. I can't put the book down.

The Thich Nhat Hanh book is a collection of letters from the 60s. Very beautiful writings.

Reading Field Notes From a Pandemic with breakfast.

Reading the first few chapters brought back memories of when lockdown was announced in Malaysia, everyone went into panic the night before. I tried to get essentials from the supermarket only to find everything gone. And the next day everything just went still. Malls, the center of Malaysian activity, went dead.

I was lucky to see things return to "normal". Many didn't get to.

I think I need a good book on, uh, the major themes and concepts of colonialism, the impact of technology and capitalism on colonization. Also, some histories on places that thwarted becoming a colony to someone else.

Any suggestions?

For 🍃via Penguin Books | ‘Grappling with the enormity of the climate crisis takes a mental toll. The vast majority (84%) of young people in particular are worried about climate change… we’ve picked a selection of fiction, nature writing, non-fiction and manifestos to offer at least slight reprieve, with realism balanced with a pinch of hope.’

It really annoys me that most fiction in English, and more particularly that translated into English, uses measures in the imperial system. It feels strange reading this in Ireland, an anachronism with contemporary characters.
But of course it's due to us getting books destined for the larger US and UK markets

📚 For my next read, it's time to return to my usual comfort pick genre: fantasy. I'll be reading Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo.

I've heard nothing but good things about this book, and the Netflix show, Shadow and Bone, which was based on it.

If it's anywhere near as good as the reviews, I'm in for a treat. Looking forward to some epic world building and adventure!

📚 Finished reading the horror novel: From Below by Darcy Coates.

A decent horror book in a unique setting deep beneath the ocean in a shipwreck being explored by a documentary team.

It got great reviews, but I'm rating it a little lower than most. The setting definitely made a change from the cliché haunted house, though!

Since Christmas 2022 I have read:

01: Mary Robinette Kowel - The Spare Man
02: Becky Chambers - The Long Way To A Small Angry Planet
03: Ann Leckie - Ancillary Justice
04: Jule Owen - The Kind
05: Jule Owen - Elidir
06: Stephen Baxter - Flood
07: Stephen Baxter - Ark
08: Ann Leckie - Ancillary Sword
09: Ann Leckie - Ancillary Mercy

I will soon have finished Adrian Tchaikovsky - Children of Memory and have to go back to more books I have already read.

#Book #Reading #Bookstodon

Maker_of_Things,

I have finished reading:
14: Sarah Maria Griffin- Spare And Found Parts.

Now reading:
14: The Forth Road Bridge - The Official Story (Published by the Forth Road Bridge Joint Board).
It was given to me recently by a elderly engineer friend as something I might find interesting as a bit of history.

Maker_of_Things,

I have finished reading:
14: The Forth Road Bridge - The Official Story.
Interesting booklet, first half was about the building of the bridge, the second half was more tourist information about that area of Scotland.

Now reading:
15: Becky Chambers - Record Of A Spaceborn Few.
I have read the Wayfarer series so many times now!

Maker_of_Things,

I have finished reading:
15: Becky Chambers - Record Of A Spaceborn Few.

Now about to start reading:
16: The Rev. Awdrey - The Railway Series.

The question is, do I list each book as I read it, or treat the whole series as one book? 🤔
Or I could read each one, alternating with something else?

Maker_of_Things,

Right, so I am now reading:
16: The Rev. Awdrey - The Railway Series.
I am listing it as one book to save adding 42 titles to my reading list.

But concurrently I will also be reading:
17: Becky Chambers - The Galaxy And The Ground Within
