Widespread seawater intrusions found beneath the grounded ice of Thwaites Glacier, West Antarctica. This makes the glacier more vulnerable to melting from a warmer ocean than anticipated, which in turn will increase projections of ice mass loss. When touches septic tanks, communities are in deep doo-doo.

"In 1999, with evidence that water quality was deteriorating along parts of the Keys, the state mandated that the island chain eliminate the use of tens of thousands of and other outdated waste systems. The cost reached roughly $1 billion as Monroe County built centralized sewage and hooked up thousands of homes and businesses.

There was a huge change in water quality.”

As sea level rise accelerates, is ‘deep into overtime’ to build coastal protections by 2030

Sea level rise in Boston broke a record in 2023. It’s expected to get worse soon.

"Generally, the city envisions a response that resembles a long jigsaw puzzle: small and varied projects that lock together to form one continuous flood barrier. All together, the projects would cost several billion dollars."

Coastal dunes are retreating as sea levels rise - our research reveals the accelerating rate of change

In some parts of Australia, coastal dunes are retreating from the ocean at an alarming rate, as waves carve up the beach and wind blows the sand inland. But coastal communities are largely oblivious to the changes.

The study found 24 [of the 32 cities examined] are sinking more than 2 millimeters per year. Half of these cities have specific areas that are sinking faster than the global sea levels are rising."

Mar 22 EWE: — Global sea level jumped due to El Niño and climate change, says NASA. Global average sea level rose by about 0.76 centimeters (0.3 inches) from 2022 to 2023 – nearly four times the increase of the previous year – NASA said Thursday, March 21, attributing the "significant jump" to a strong El Niño and a warming climate. https://www.lemonde.fr/en/environment/article/2024/03/22/global-sea-level-jumped-due-to-el-nino-and-climate-change-nasa_6644252_114.html?utm_source=flipboard&utm_content=user%2FLeMonde_en

Signs found of worryingly fast Antarctic ice melt - New Zealand expedition

"The changes to the sea-ice indicate that in the coming decades coastal cities will need to be reconfigured because of sea level rise, Stevens said.

While the effects these changes will cause to ecosystems will impact mammals like penguins, whales and seals, and weather systems would also change around the Southern Ocean."

"#Subsidence is part of the problem. But what's unique to us is a triple whammy of sea level rise, rising ground water, and low land flooding from more extreme storms. It matters where the water comes from.

Why does the loss of ice in Antarctica affect Northern Europe more than melt in Greenland?

Apparently, many people are confused about how global and local sea level rise are not the same so I wrote a brief blog post to try and explain it.

Posting again for the European morning crowd..

Nova Scotia where we confidently boast that nothing is more than 50 km from the sea... decides that the coast does not need protected and people will just do the right thing. (for themsleves esp if rich) Why don't conservatives want to conserve the coast line? Premier says they all get to decide for themselves.
