Much excitement today: I got to help this awesome across the road. It was slipping all over the place, so I stood close by so it could get a boost off my boot. Unfortunately I also accidentally stepped on its tail tip, poor thing, after which it was less inclined to trust me to be helpful. But we got there in the end. Gorgeous beast. (I don’t know Greek snakes, but I do know enough to be very sure that this is not venomous.)

Good looking California Kingsnake on my ride yesterday under May gray skies. This is a quiet access road that the snake crossed pretty quickly, especially once it noticed me. Rancho Sierra Vista / Satwiwa, Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, Newbury Park, CA.

One piece of good news... After initially refusing a mouse yesterday (as he often does), I left the mouse in overnight and apparently Aziraphel my changed his mind and ate it after all! 🎉

Near Carwitz, two men once observed a mysterious snake dance, led by the king of the snakes.

Not even sure if it was original, I saw it here many times independently last few days, from various accounts posting this.
I imagined it as some - - , most possibly living underwater so it could move quickly in this shape :blobcatjoy:

Spotted a yellow-crowned night heron and a black rat snake on yesterday's neighborhood walk. (I think that's what they are, but open to being corrected.)

Saw them both within 100-150 ft of each other, on the 6th km of an otherwise uneventful 7.5km walk. 😀

Snake video 👇🏽 (none of my clients were able to attach both videos to this post).

Video of a grey heron sitting on a tree branch and then flying away towards a backyard, eventually settling down by a creek.

An ancient snake in India might have been longer than a school bus and weighed a ton.

AP reports: "Fossils found near a coal mine revealed a snake that stretched an estimated 36 feet (11 meters) to 50 feet (15 meters). It’s comparable to the largest known snake at about 42 feet (13 meters) that once lived in what is now Colombia."

OMG look who I met on my walk to the bus stop this morning! It’s a little brown snake or garter snake??(not venomous, small, gentle, native) Look at this amazing New Yorker! So cute. They were sunning on the sidewalk so I moved them to a warm hidden rock. I worry someone will kill it just for being a snake. Happily the school kids who stopped to watch were delighted if a little scared. This snake has made my day!

I've been in and out of Glasgow University's Graham Kerr Building, home to what was the Zoology Department when I was an undergrad, many times over the last 30 years, but it was only yesterday that I noticed this wonderful little detail of a snake on the handles of the outermost doors.

Saw this beauty through the window, a 4-1/2 foot (~137 cm) Central Ratsnake (Pantherophis Alleghaniensis). It climbed up a bush near the corner of the house and I was able to get some close ups. I didn’t see a birds nest, so I suspect it was preparing to lay in wait for prey to ambush, which I’ve read they sometimes do. #wildlifephotography #WildLife #snake

As I was trying to get close enough to get a good picture, I almost stepped on my buddy here, a common garter snake (Thamnphis Sirtalis). It was about 18” (~48 cm) long. #snake #WildLife #wildlifephotography

So I went back through the house and came from the other direction. After getting some shots of the Central Ratsnake, I went to get closer and as I stepped off the deck, I came across my Common Garter snake buddy again. It was less than thrilled.

There is what looks to be an old injury, a place where the markings almost are notched. #wildlifephotography #WildLife #snake
