Bing and related search engines crashed today, because @Techaltar plugged Ecosia so hard in today's video, causing millions to suddenly switch, true story.
So it seems that #DuckDuckGo was down for the last few hours because of a #Bing outage. That's very annoying; DDG should probably get out from under Microsoft's coat tails...
While #DuckDuckGo is down, I tried out a few other search engines. I did a search I made yesterday in each. #Bing gave me an interesting looking blog first, then some less-related info from high-trust sources, then an interesting paper, then a bunch of garbage. #Mojeek gave me nothing that looked interesting, just pages that used some of the words from my search. #Kagi gave me the less-related high-trust sources first, then the entire rest of the first page looked interesting.
Wow, THIS is an eye-opener. A visual representation of what Search API powers what other Search engine. I'd no idea Bing had become so prevalent. I didn't even realise my own choice of engine, Startpage, had abandoned Google for it!
NB: This actually lists SP as still using Google but Seirdy's list doing the rounds elsewhere correctly states it as having moved.
When #Bing and #duckduckgo is down, #kagi is still working. I’m an happy kagi paying user.
If only they didn’t try to divest themselves printing t-shirts, making a new MacOS browser or a completely-utterly stupid IA, they would be a really cool company.
But companies come and go, it is just a matter of not being dependent and jumping out of the wagon as soon as the enshitiffication becomes too strong.
#Bing (search) being down, and causing #DuckDuckGo to throw "There was an error displaying the search results. Please try again." is demonstrating that even if DDG say they also use other sources they're 100% dependent on Bing to actually have their search work.
So, are those 'other sources' only used to augment results ?
No AI and data privacy. Image search is a little rocky and it doesn't have maps, but I find it consistently better for straight web search results than DDG or Google.
@viennawriter@GossiTheDog@gabboman Agree. Calling #DuckDuckGo just a #Bing front-end is technically true but also it does add a lot of value on top acting as a privacy shield not letting #Microsoft track the users. I also like the features it provides on top like bangs, etc. Also hopes it builds its own index sometime. They say they have their own index but I doubt it as it was unable to return any results even for simple queries when Bing was down.
