What Scotsman was caught up in a civil war before the age of twenty? Wrote a book that became the inspiration for an Oscar-winning film? Met a runaway teenager in Paris and married her against the wishes of his family? Lost his ranch to raiding Apaches?
Our book EMPIRES & REVOLUTIONS: Cunninghame Graham & His Contemporaries contains essays exploring ideas of revolution, emancipation, equality, & liberty in the works of RBCG & other Scottish writers of the period—in print & online via Project MUSE

Just finished Kris Manjapra’s “Black Ghost of Empire: The Long Death of Slavery and the Failure of Emancipation”
Fascinating and heartbreaking analysis of how #emancipation has always been a means of continuing slavery while pretending to eliminate it (via “indenture periods” and reparations to slavers for “property lost”) and how to move past this #history for a more #humane world
Israelites or Citizens of Mosaic confession (named after Moses, German: Israeliten, "Deutschen mosaischen Konfession"; Hungarian: Izraeliták, 'Mózes-hitű magyarok') was a term for Jewish citizens, in many European states, during the period of Emancipation (150 years from the Act of #Tolerance to the interwar period). The term was intended to enforce their affiliation to local nations and limit any Jewish particularism to its religious dimensions.
Today in Labor History December 24, 1807: Elizabeth Chandler, poet and abolitionist, was born on this date. In 1825, when she was only eighteen years old, her poem, "The Slave-Ship", was published, leading Benjamin Lundy, a well-known abolitionist and publisher, to ask her to write for his periodical, “The Genius of Universal Emancipation.” Chandler called for better treatment for Native Americans and the immediate emancipation of slaves. She was also responsible for popularizing one of the most famous abolitionist images, the kneeling female slave with the slogan "Am I not a Woman and a Sister?"
Every coverage on this event blames Kremlin propaganda, but Kremlin propagandists, like #Solovyov (who is Jew himself) did not call on killing Jews, they just accused Israel government in being imperialistic
Same time, #Dagestan is 100% Muslim nation occupied by russians, and this action goes against Kremlin will. The #EndOfEmpire is getting closer?
there is an old-school soviet propaganda pattern of blaming government of Israel in being bad (without targeting Jews as a culture), which is shared by every leftist on the planet, including #Greta and Kremlin just follows it when it suits them. Same time this Pogrom is performed by Muslims, it is the same as pro-Palestinian marches in EU and US . The trick is that Muslims in russian empire are allowed only to be cheap labor and cannon fodder, they are not allowed to express themselves in any way. Because russian empire is the last defender of true Christianity and all this Dostoevsky orcshit. #Dostoevsky and the idea of orcish spiritual superhuman is pretty antisemitic beneath, but it's not meant for Muslims, only targets the masters of russian empire, orthodox slavs. So it's not really result of russian propaganda, which tries to keep russian Muslims in check, it's kind of anti-imperial Muslim #emancipation
“'Children in the US can be legally married in 41 states, physically punished by school administrators in 47 states, sentenced to life without parole in 22 states, and work in hazardous agriculture conditions in all 50 states.' Over and over again, the worst states for children are clustered around the 'pro-life' Bible Belt, and the map of the states that are the worst for children looks a lot like a map of red-state America."
@gwynnion
Thanks for bringing more attention to this issue…
Every time I see another gov or statehouse neglect to see #kids as…
Autonomous human beings…w/right’s & #freedom (s) we all demand for ourselves.
Kid’s rights…legal #emancipation was debated frequently in ‘80’s.
Today’s kids are only seen as an extension of their #parents & #community.
To do w/as they like…ownership…no #freewill.
Is that what we want for this country?
What kind of future do you see if this continues?
@LouisIngenthron That's all? DeSantis & his co-conspirators just need to redraw the map?
That's all they get for violating the Constitution/ Reconstruction Amendments????
Hasn't justice been tempered with mercy for too long already, to the blatant disadvantage of people of color in southern ex-slaveholder states, which ratified the Reconstruction Amendments to regain congressional representation, only to habitually violate those Amendments in those states after having infiltrated Congress again?
"The theory of exodus proposes that the most effective way of opposing capitalism and the liberal state is not through direct confrontation but by means of what Paolo Virno has called “engaged withdrawal,”mass defection by those wishing to create new forms of community.
One need only glance at the historical record to confirm that most successful forms of popular resistance have taken precisely this form. They have not involved challenging power head on (this usually leads to being slaughtered, or if not, turning into some—often even uglier—variant of the very thing one first challenged) but from one or another strategy of slipping away from its grasp, from flight, desertion, the founding of new communities.”
"Slavery existed for 250 years in this country, and it’s only not existed for 150. And, you know, the way that I was taught about slavery, growing up, in elementary school, we were made to feel as if it was something that happened in the Jurassic age, that it was the flint stone, the dinosaurs and slavery, almost as if they all happened at the same time."
This small, unassuming building at 161 Gallowgate was home to a Quaker Grocer by the name of William Smeal. Smeal was one of the leaders of the anti-slavery movement in Scotland. He helped found the Glasgow Emancipation Society in the 1833. Through the work of Smeal and others, Glasgow became of of the key centres for the fight against slavery worldewide.
